*Named L’Alizé for the Refreshing Breezes*
Nestled above a private cove beach (locally called a “keyhole”) on the South shore of the tropical island of Roatan, this large luxury home, enjoys both a constant sea breeze and a dramatic view of the Caribbean. L’Alizé derives its name from the French word for African trade winds, (alizés) which flow East to West during the warmest months of the year. These dramatic winds account for a such a surprising cooling effect on the hottest days, that it quickly becomes clear why Roatan’s earliest towns settled on the South side of the island where these winds rarely fail to cool and refresh while they keep the bugs in check. In January one guest wrote, "We toured the whole island and there isn't a more beautiful property on Roatan. I didn't use any Deet and didn't get a bite."
*L’Alizé Awarded the distinction of a luxury destination*
In 2014 L'Alize was awarded the distinction of a luxury destination for Homeaway’s Luxury Rentals site, by Andrew Harper, a leading luxury travel company TM, . One of 5 luxury rental properties on Roatan which have qualified for this prestigious rating (see luxury.homeaway ).
L’Alizé distinguishes itself from many vacation rentals, in that we have a limited full time staff. We think their service is key to giving our guests the little extras that make a vacation more relaxing and carefree. We like to think of ourselves as a cross between a hotel and a luxury home or simply as a home with staff. If privacy is what you crave, our staff understands and will be unobtrusive, i.e. cleaning the pool early, or cleaning rooms while you are gone. If you would like more help, they will be available. It is helpful to them and us to know in advance, if you will want cooking or driving services.
Eddie our capable groundskeeper will tend the pool and rake the beach each day. He will drive the minibus if you like, taking everyone or just some of your group, to restaurants, or favorite beaches. He and Keilin can even purchase groceries for you when you would rather pick up some sun rays, than groceries. Keilin, our housekeeper, will clean the house daily or on selected days. Keilin can provide snacks and breakfast and occasional meals. (We don’t want you to miss out on the great restaurants on Roatan).
Please give us and Keilin advance notice if you would like her to cook. She and Edier can also do a pre arrival shopping or shopping while you are here.
*The Wild Side*
L’Alizé, where pristine jungle and iron shore meet the Caribbean, may not be for everyone. The beauty of the South Shore is also rugged and wild. Agouti ( in the Capybara family) and iguana scamper up the drive and onto the jungle covered hillside throughout the day. The stunning keyhole beaches just minutes walk from L’Alize, are just as they were 100 years ago. Each keyhole is bordered with ancient iron shore, home to sunning iguanas and Hama lizards and other wild creatures. We have even seen an occasional boa enjoying the sunny salt air. These coves can get mild to strong wave action in the afternoon breezes. This is a great thing for staying cool on the beach and at L’Alizé, and this is the #1 deterrent for bugs , but it does mean that water in the private keyhole can get rough, particularly as the breezes pick up in the afternoon. Most people can snorkel and enjoy the coral and underwater beauty without being bothered by the waves, but others may find the waves troublesome. The first keyhole gets more wave action than the second keyhole, which is narrower and so more protected. The iron-shore (ancient coral pushed out of the sea by volcanic activity) is interesting and how nature says “don’t touch”. This black coral contains fossils of ancient shells and a number of small animals and sea creatures make it their home. It is challenging to climb and the roughest surface most of us have ever touched, so please bring water shoes or tennis shoes, if you want to explore this unusual geologic formation. On these keyhole sandy beaches, there are no shops, restaurants or ice-cream stands, tourist kiosks, rentals, or boat taxis, just wildlife and you, if you so choose.
If your group has a mix of privacy seeking adventurers and tame-white sands-beach-lovers, you might make a concession to split time between the beaches on the wild south side and the tame north side. Ask Edier to drop you off for the afternoon in West Bay Beach. Get your fill of ice cream and the crowds, then come back to L’Alizé. We are only a mile apart yet our beaches are beautifully different. If you prefer tame, flat, white sandy beaches with tourist activity, a vacation rental or hotel on West Bay Beach may be more to your liking. We recognize that the privacy, peacefulness, and untamed nature of the Wild Side, is not for everyone.

*L’Alizé suits a variety of tastes*
Nestled in a pristine wildlife retreat that exhibits a wide spectrum of eco systems, L’Alize abuts mangroves and dramatic iron shore with ancient coral. Pick a less breezy day, to take the Kayaks out for a ride to the second keyhole toward Pirates Cove. These kayaks will glide to sights few eyes have seen.
Whether celebrating family events with extended family or joining old friends or celebrating a romantic retreat, L’Alizé offers adventure or relaxation, luxury and convenience, privacy and plenty of nearby activities to suit all tastes.
Owners' kids slack line across the path to the keyhole beach.
Owners live and work in Central America. L'Alizé's natural beauty and privacy provide a place to catch up on unfinished business. This is an ideal setting for uninterrupted reading, painting or writing. With their children they enjoy exploring caves, the rope swing and snorkeling.
Rosanne purchased this house in 2010
A true getaway. Nestled in dramatic untamed beauty on pristine turquoise shores with abundant wildlife, makes this home a refuge as well as a great place to celebrate family gatherings. Restaurants, and grocery stores are only minutes away.
L'Alizé has all the modern conveniences of home with the feel of an outpost on an uninhabited island. The view from the second floor great room took our breath away the first time and each time we visit. We never get used to the beauty.
The home is well maintained and regularly updated with the amenities we want to find.
Beautiful home in a secluded tropical paradise!

L'Alize is a lovely place with all the amenities of home. The kitchen on the second floor has plenty of counter space and everything you need to cook your favorite meals. The BBQ on the deck is perfect for grilling up some fish! It seems that there is a great view of the ocean from every point. Whether enjoying a leisurely brunch on the deck, dining at the large table while gazing through the double doors at the ocean, or sitting on the comfy couch to watch a movie or play games, the view is always right in front of you. The beach is just a short stroll away and is very private. The keyhole (ocean inlet) is really lovely to cool off in, or as an entrance to great snorkeling to the right and the left. No cruise ship tourists have been standing on the coral here! There are caves to explore, iguana to watch scurrying over the rocks and other beaches nearby to visit as well. Some people love to swim and snorkel and explore, while others enjoy laying out and working on their tan. I like to do both and this is the perfect place! The benefits of privacy come with the small cost of a very steep hill to get to the main road. A rental car would be very helpful, but it is possible to walk up the hill and flag down a taxi for the short drive to West Bay or West End. We also got the phone number of a taxi driver who dropped us off and just called him to come get us when we wanted to go into town. Gumbalimba park is very close with zip lines and plenty of wildlife (including birds that will perch on your head and monkeys that crawl across your shoulders!) The dolphin show at Anthony's Key resort is always fun as is the little museum there with some information about the islands. If you tire of the peace and quiet, you can head into West End for some excellent dining and live music at several venues on the weekends. L'Alize is an all around great place to vacation. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little piece of paradise!
Owner response: Thank you for your lovely review. We hope you will come back soon to enjoy this “little piece of paradise” .

We spent a week at L'Alize in June, celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary with our children and grandchildren. It was a large group, thirteen in all, ranging in age from 9 to 73, yet it met all of our needs. It was comfortable, spacious and beautiful.
L'Alize is certainly unique in our experience. The owner, Rosanne, was helpful well before the trip, discussing where people might stay, meals and pre-arrival grocery shopping. At her suggestion, we engaged her housekeeper/cook to shop for us and to make breakfasts, some lunches and two dinners. That was quite convenient and a good recommendation. Similarly we engaged her 12-person van and her handyman/driver to run errands and to drive us to and from meals out, to beaches and shopping. He was reliable, punctual and personable. Driving is difficult on Roatan's hilly, curvy roads. I would recommend one and all to retain him. The price for the van and his services is quite reasonable, and your life will be much simpler.
L'Alize is lovely and elegant-yet comfortable for our teen-agers to flop around. It's three floors, built into a hill, overlooking a short, beautiful valley which ends in a beautiful little "keyhole" beach. One of the most popular parts of the property was a delightful small pool on the lowest level, where all of us spent lots of time, both day and night. There are gorgeous views down the valley to the Caribbean. Everyone felt the view from the 2nd floor living room was spectacular (and it was) until our daughter visited our 3rd floor master bedroom and found the view even more breathtaking! The temperatures were typically around 90 degrees F, but constant breezes off the Caribbean kept the place quite comfortable.
L'Alize is a very vertical property. It is not the place for anyone with difficulty handling stairs. You must climb three flights of stairs to enter the house; the house is three stories, and the steps from the pool into the valley are steep.
With that single concern, we would enthusiastically recommend L'Alize to any group ready for fun and adventure!
Extremely comfortable and cozy island experience; Property is fully equipped in every room & nice bathrooms. POOL: perfect location on patio for running to kitchen for drink/snack refills, great for wading and evening conversation, deep enough for adults to stand in deep end, shallow section for nonswimmers, nice cushioned lounge chairs.and nice light breeze during the day. PRIVATE BEACH COVE: picturesque, lots of fun with canoe and snorkeling , wear water shoes, lounging chairs were brought over for us. Careful, as we did not escape sand fly bites, even with lots of repellent.
TEMPERATURE inside the house, was perfect and adjustable except for one bedroom. Kitchen had everything you'll need if you plan on cooking. Optional cook, Kaylin was fairly new but made great pancakes, scones and banana muffins. We cooked a few dinners ourselves and went out for the rest. Ordering for delivery was available but we did not use this option. Note: Suggest you have driver stop at Eldon's Supermarket after your airport arrival to purchase food prep items. If not then, purchase before the day you need them; stores are 15-20 minutes away. Sending for items takes awhile for delivery. (Unless you drive to the store yourself.) We are frequent travelers and have rented very nice homes in the past (including in Roatan). This was one of the most enjoyable vacations yet. Thanks for easy rental process and great service during our stay.
Note: We were 17- 60 years old. The main deck off of the kitchen and living room (where we ate breakfast and played games in the evening) would have been a safety issue (no railings) if we had children with us.
I cannot say enough about the amazing house and the surrounding beauty of L'Alize. The beautiful, three-story house seems carved into the hillside, providing you with more incredible views than you could want. There is easy, fast access to amazing snorkeling, and Roseanne (the owner) is easily available by phone to ask any questions you may have, and Eddie (who stays at a house on site) is available to drive wherever you may need. We opted to have a meal provided daily by the cook on site, Kaylee. She prepared delicious traditional Honduran food for us, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The house itself is well-furnished and beautifully decorated, with an incredible kitchen. Leaving the doors and shutters open allows for incredible breezes to flow through the houses, and we never had any issues with bugs at all.
This house is luxurious, comfortably sleeps 12, has beautiful views surrounding it and quick access to a grocery, restaurants, and incredible attractions. The hardest part was leaving!
Rosanne's exquisite home could be a dump and the view/setting/landscape would still surpass any setting imaginable. The home was lovely, though, and Tish, Rosanne and Eddie tried to meet any need that we had while on the island. We visited much of the islands' offerings but found it so relaxing just to stay at L'Alize. Any group/family would be fortunate to spend a week in this remarkable home and setting.
My husband and I rented this house using luxury rentals at HomeAway. As a result, I had very high expectations of the home. While the home is nice, it is far from luxurious, and it certainly is not one of the nicest rental properties on the island. The furniture is very worn and uncomfortable, the inside of the house needs some minor repairs, and the window screens all have holes...meaning we couldn't open the doors and windows to enjoy the breeze without letting in the bugs. We also ran out of water two times while there, did not have any garbage bags nor paper towels. Edier and his family, who are all very nice, were only around on the last day of our visit. Finally, I found it a bit off putting that Tish offered us a discount at her dive shop in West End, and when we visited we were offered a dive that was $15 more expensive then any other dive we'd been on.
On the plus side, the views from the house are lovely, the breeze is very nice, and it certainly is a home large enough to accommodate big groups. A comfortable but not luxurious home.
First, Roatan is one of the best places on Earth. It is mostly unspoiled rainforest with the best diving in the world. Regardless of where you stay, I would highly recommend a vacation there.
If you decide to make the trip, I highly recommend this property. Roseanne, the owner, was a delight to work with leading up to our vacation, during the vacation, and afterward. We had a few little minor miscommunications (not her fault!) which were easily rectified via email on day one. I cannot speak highly enough of Roseanne and how easy to work with she is. We were there with 8 adults and 6 teenagers (4 families) for a little mini family reunion and it was the perfect place for us!
With regards to the property, there are a few things to be aware of. The trade winds on that side of the island can be intense. Frankly, it makes the heat/humidity bearable. However, it can also make the little beaches unusable, especially if you have smaller kids. Our kids are all teens. They enjoyed it, but it was very rough and they got tossed around a little. In the end, it didn't matter one single bit. We ended up spending more time at West End and West Bay, so we really weren't around much during the day. This would not prevent me from renting again as the rest of our experience was so outstanding. The guest house is pretty darn hot and doesn't get a lot of air movement because of its position behind the home. Roseanne tells me they are putting in new windows and A/C, so this will not be an issue.
The upsides to the property are that it is spacious with lots of bathrooms and an awesome kitchen/great room. The decks and patio face the sea with an awesome view and a breeze that totally negates the tropical heat/humidity. With the doors and windows open, the breeze runs through the house and allowed us to sleep most nights without the A/C on.
Now for the best part of the house; Edier and Olga. The onsite caretakers ARE AWESOME! Olga prepared our breakfasts and dinners every night. The fee for this, plus the tip and cost of groceries, worked out to less than $10 per person per day. SERIOUSLY? How can you beat that? On top of making it an actual vacation by not having to cook, it was way cheaper than eating those meals out. As for Edi, the man was like the butler in the movie, Mr. Deeds. Every time we turned around looking to see if he was there to pick us up, he was there. He was awesome. Having Edi drive us all over the island in the 15 passenger Toyota mini-bus was worth
Located on the South Shore of West Bay, L'Alizè sits perched above a pristine Cove beach, with wildlife and tropical vegetation surrounding the home. Guests can visit West Bay Beach, (a 3 min drive or 15 min walk) to enjoy restaurants, a nature park, rent scuba equipment or even risk para-sailing. Enjoy relaxing on the pristine white sand beaches or check out the snorkel gear from L'Alizé and see what beauty lies beneath the turquoise waters. Relaxing in the salt water pool is the perfect way to relax and reflect on your perfect day. Two tandem Kayaks are now available to guests. Each can seat 3 average sized adults. These gliding boats will allow guests to see the dramatic beauty of the uninhabited iron shore and explore caves and snorkel new areas. If you would like to use these please ask at check-in.
