2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 5

This is a gem. An exquisite old-rose garden cascades in front of your 11 foot, floor-to-ceiling bow window in the master bedroom. A wall of French doors opens onto a large deck that's perfect for catching the sun or sipping wine. Enjoy the outdoor shower and cedar hot tub. Quiet. Off the street, but right in the middle of charming downtown Arcata.

Stroll two blocks to the Humboldt State University campus. The Redwood Community Forest is around the corner and you can explore beneath the ancient old-growth redwoods. Check out Arcata's bustling small-town plaza with a local artists' gallery, Saturday Farmers' market, unbeatable French cafe and great restaurants featuring local, organic cuisine. And, by the way, we're a short drive to the ocean and miles of deserted beaches, too. Sound like a relaxing hide away? You have found THE magic spot.

This home is behind a locked gate. It's has a fully fenced yard and a washer/drier. Wi-Fi. No TV. It has a queen bed in the master plus a twin mattress in the master nook that can sleep one. The nook is special. You're right in the roses! There is a guest room with a queen bed. There is one full bath inside the house, plus the very private outdoor shower by the hot tub.

We welcome you. Peace, quiet and pure relaxation can be yours here at this virtual spa.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I had the opportunity to rent Jane's home with some friends from college. I feel that the title Magic Garden Home is an understatement...Jane's home is a real Oasis. The town of Arcata is cute, has loads of charm, and awesome redwood forest hikes, but my friends and I found ourselves wanting to spend most of our time at the house. From the sounds of trickling water of the small fountains, to the Buddha statues, the rose garden, natural hot tub, and deck that blocked any wind--it all made us feel so zen. One of my friends said repeatedly "I'm never leaving this house." I felt that same way. :) While we didn't meet in person (her nice neighbor greeted and oriented us to the home), Jane and I talked on the phone, emailed and text messaged--she was very accommodating and available for any questions/recommendations during our stay. Thanks Jane--we will all remember your place for a long long time, and hope to stay again sometime. :)

Reviewer Comments:

Really nice back yard. House is lacking in a real living room. There's a couch in the kitchen. Also no television, so that's worth noting. Finally, it feels less than private, as the owner lives on site and makes sure to peek at you over the fence and show up unannounced.

Owner's Response: Hi Robert, Thanks for appreciating the nice back yard. We do have photos of the entire property that accurately depict the lay out and we do note there is no television. There is plenty of WIFI for streaming your favorite channels. The owners don't live on site, but you may have experienced was the maintenance man. The properties on both sides of the fence are all on the same parcel and probably saw his head bobbing up and down as he was doing his work. Our apologies if you felt he was peeking over the fence. To all guests, remember, calls to management and reservations are always welcome with questions before booking and occurrences during your stay! We want all guests to have the best experience while they are staying with us here at Magic Garden or any of our properties with Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals!

The old stove was leaking gas, we opened all the windows all night long. Non of the windows in the master had covers on them, compleat exposure and the excuse that " as the owner I don't like being exposed so though the Windows have no covers trust me I made sure...." I did not trust her or her judgement based off the hippie anti-America capitalist books they had but seem not to mind charging an overrated price for their was not fun staying there no tv no wifi nada

Owner's Response: Sorry you hated the place. Everyone else loves it. There is WIFI. We advertise no TV. A pilot light went out on the commercial stove and a call to management would have fixed that immediately. We provide privacy screens for those that don't feel comfortable with the open nature of the bedroom looking out into the rose gardens.

Magical Stay-Cation

  • 5 of 5

Tucked into the quaint little neighborhood just a moments stroll from the iconic Arcata Plaza, is where I found myself and my husband on the evening we celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary. Being a Humboldt County local, I had driven this same street countless times yet had no idea what lies behind the gate. This year we wanted to do something different, something special, so we opted for a little stay-cation. And what better place to celebrate our union than in a romantic and magical vacation home.

With so much to do in downtown Arcata, we knew we wanted to be close to the multiple fine dining and entertainment options available there, yet longed to feel worlds away at the same time. The Magic Garden Home was the perfect fit and provided just the ambiance we were looking for. This vacation rental, offered by Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals, is truly a gem.

Set back down a walkway and through a tall gate, upon arrival you feel like you have entered into another realm. A magnificent old-rose garden greets you and sits directly in front of the 11-foot French doors of the master bedroom in which we would be staying. Private and serene, this garden provided the view of which we would wake to after an evening of soaking in the cedar hot tub, which is also a key feature of this magic garden as well.

The eclectic décor of this home transported us from Arcata to what felt like someplace else. We really enjoyed not only the garden hot tub, but also the attention to details in the interior of this magical home. Everything was updated, clean and extremely cozy, yet held to a unique contemporary rustic feel that helped create the ambiance of this special occasion.

We did head out to dine on the town, but were eager to returned to our little sanctuary for the eve, as this place was simply fantastic. With good food in our bellies, a bottle of locally produced fine wine, and a soak in the garden tub, we could not have asked for more on this special occasion. My husband and I both highly recommend a stay-cation like this for other couples looking for something new and different to do, and would recommend this home in particular home, as it really is a magical find as the name implies. And for out of town visitors, what better place to stay than just blocks away from downtown, where there is so much to explore. Again, so close, yet feels so private and far away. We loved the Magic Garden Home.

Reviewer Comments:

My husband & I stayed 2 nights. We weren't checked in by Samantha, which worked out alright but it would have been beneficial for knowing where everything was & etc. We would have appreciated knowing the on-site staff; There is a small apt off of the smaller bedroom corner of the house. Being that there are no blinds, we didn't feel fully secure at night. We were told that we could use the room divider in front of the windows in the bedroom but it would have only covered one set of the french doors, leaving the rest of the room exposed to the staff. Surely, the staff is safe & friendly being that the property managers hired them, but it would have made us feel more secure at night, as well during the day while we left our belongings. The kitchen is well furnished minus the knives being exceptionally dull. The heating system was disappointing even once we had made sure that it was on & turned up to 68 (arrived with the thermostat being at 63). It was still chilly so we turned it to 70 & were decently satisfied. There was still a draft to the air especially to the bedroom. Of course, it’s a remodeled, older house with higher ceilings, so it makes sense. We appreciated the intricacies of the home in the remodel & the decor. The ‘hot’ tub was more like a lukewarm bath so we only used it the first night. We had a 3:30 AM wake up call from the smoke detector in the master bedroom (too high to reach without a ladder) on our second night. We were able to get in contact with Samantha the second time calling her, she came to aid by 4:15 & we had it solved by 4:40. She offered that we stay until 11 versus 10, but we ended up getting on the road early. All in all, we are thankful for the experience even with the few hiccups.

Owner's Response: So sorry this stay was less than satisfactory for you. Everyone is different with how they find comfort in the home. Most guests do not mind the openness of the master bedroom. I just had a repeat guest come and stay three weeks because she loves the bedroom windows and how she can wake up and look at the rose gardens. Staff does not live on the property. All the cabins are private rentals and no one comes into the gardens during your stay except trash and hot tub maintenance. You have complete privacy. The beepy alarm at that time of the morning was unfortunate and glad I was able to come and help you. PS Feel free to adjust the thermostat to your comfort level. We typically don't turn heat up too high prior to arrivals because some people don't want it so warm so we try to find a happy medium for everyone.
