About Dr. David 'Bucky' Wagmer

We have had our home on the island since 1972 when I was a coach and administrator at Florida State University. Our children were raised on the island (we spend most weekends here) and they still call it home. We completely remodeled and enlarged the property in the early 2002. It is virtually a new home. We currently live in Statesboro, GA where I have retired as Associate Professor of Sport Law and Athletics Director at Georgia Southern University. I have also retired from my own athletics consulting business am a licensed real estate broker. My wife has retired from being a manager at an electrical coop. We have four children, all married, all college graduates, and all able to pay their own house payments.....We are in love with the island and hope to spend much more time here in our retired years. I am an avid fisherman and can tell you where to fish and when to fish and my wife knows every restaurant and every shop in the area. Please feel free to ask out advice about anything pertaining to your vacation.

Why Dr. David 'Bucky' Wagmer chose Florida

This property is a stand alone home on pilings located on a half acre lot. We have a view of the gulf and we are a short walk (150 yards approx) from the waters edge. It is super clean and well maintained. Very comfortable for four but can be used for six. We are located less than a mile from the middle of the island and the stores and restaurants. We are located on the walking path that circles the central part of the island.

What makes this house unique

As a stand alone property, it is peaceful, quiet, and has all the amenities to make you vacation a success. Including WiFi.

The island and the surrounding area is very special, quaint, bountiful, with the most beautiful beaches with the most splender than nature can provide.

Amazing time at an amazing place

  • 5 of 5

Another year in the books at St. George Island and another year in the books at Buckey's Hauser. Great place to stay and the owner is extremely nice and makes sure you are relaxed on your vacation. Great location on the island, short walk and you're at the water.

Excellent week in the sun

  • 5 of 5

All three of us (3 middle-aged adults) found Bucky's place to be exactly what the doctor ordered during our early June vacation. We liked the house and its appointments quite a lot. There was a slight problem with the plumbing on our first day, but it was quickly fixed. Bucky was extremely helpful and so was his on-island handyman. Everything worked and the description of the house was as advertised. The house is close to the beach. Although there is no direct access to the Gulf through the "backyard," the walking distance to the beach is still probably under 250 yards--certainly no need for one of the ubiquitous golf carts you see everywhere. An excellent, private, outdoor shower, we used every day. We did not grill out, but the grill seemed to be in good working order. We did cook in the kitchen, which has everything. The freezer portion of the refrigerator makes ice quickly. Interior temperature was nicely cool during a hot week, though the AC seemed to cut off of its own volition during the early morning hours. No real problem. The ceiling fans kept everything comfortable. We have rented a number of houses over the years (west coast, east coast, south coast) and this one ranks high on our list. We would definitely come back. Recommended.

3rd tier house, reasonable price, dog friendly

  • 4 of 5

Spectacular weather! Thank you Bucky for allowing us to use your home for our vacation. We had a very comfortable stay.

Master bedroom queen bed was ok. I'd suggest putting a king bed in the twin bedroom & the twin beds in the master since it's the

smaller of the two bedrooms. A new dishwasher that is less noisy would be a plus also. The back deck was perfect for relaxing & even though it's a third tier home you could still hear the waves and had a partial ocean view.

Currently there is construction happening on a new house right on the beach but eventually that will be completed

Also, it's a bit noisy when neighbors decide to do yard work but that's typical no matter where you live.

Living area is very comfortable and is an open plan to the kitchen. There is no dining room/table only bar stools at the kitchen island and a round table on the deck for dining. So be prepared if there is inclement weather to eat at the island or at the couch, love seat or recliner. Bathrooms are a bit dated but workable. Laundry room downstairs(locked but uses same key as house key)

Pleasant to have an outdoor shower after the trek from the beach. Also a couple hoses for rinsing yourself and the dog off.

We thank you Bucky for allowing us to have our dog vacation with us. We think she enjoyed her beach walks too!

I'm not impressed with VacationRentals.com. I suggest you contact the owner directly for payment as VR does not allow you to split payments. I think their service fee is overrated as there is no service from that company.

On the upside, Bucky is always available via phone or email for any questions or problems that may arise.

You won't be disappointed with his comfortable accommodations.

Perfect spring break

  • 5 of 5

I, two papillons and my girlfriend stayed in Bucky's Beach House for a week in April. Weather was fabulous , beach 2 min away, white sand and the quiet place. The house is very clean and comfortable. It has everything you need. My girlfriend has loved sitting and getting tan on the deck. My two pups loved walk on the beach. I have loved everything about St George Island. This was my second trip to this beutifull place. Bucky is a darling to deal with. He will call you and help you with all the needs for your travel and stay in his charming house. The best vacation ever. Thank you Dr. W. Hope to rent from you soon.

SGI is a wonderfully low key place with a fabulous beach and great seafood. Bucky's Beach House is a fun place to stay and close to everything. It's so appreciated that Bucky's place is pet friendly!

We are loving it!

  • 5 of 5

The house is exactly as advertised, and Bucky is a treat to deal with. He makes it easy to have a wonderful trip.... just ask anything.

As a professional chef, I was worryed abou cooking equip., but it's all here! (we replced the can opener) It's very comfortable and bright. We asked Bucky for nice warm Florida weather, but he failed... he did keep all that snow away, so we were happy. Apalach is a great friendly pla ce and theseafood is incredible.

We'll look forward to our next trip and never forget this one!

From Tallahassee Take US 319 South to US 98 to East Point turn left on St George Island Causway to dead end on island. Turn right on West Gulf Beach Drive to 8th street. 816 is third house on the left. Enjoy the 5th ranked beach in the US and the quaint fishing villages of Apalachicola and Carrabelle FL. at the mouth of beautiful Apalachicola and Carrabelle Rivers. Pristine open beaches for 13 miles of State Park. Walk the beach with no sign of civilization. Lush saltwater estuaries fed by freshwater rivers. 75 miles of State Forest surrounds mouth of Apalachicola River. New estuary museum is a must to see to enjoy the culture of the island and the nature of the estuary. Crystal clear Port St. Joe Bay full of fish and scallops in the summer. Adjoined by uninhabited St. Vincent island on the west and nearly uninhabited Dog Island to the East. Rated the fifth best beaches in the US. Great local seafood resturants, quaint villages, outstanding gourmet restaurants, the Apalachicola Bay produces 98% of all the oysters harvested in Florida. All seafood is fresh and delicious. Named the forgotten coast, no high rises, less commercialization than Florida beaches near larger cities. A true diamond in the rough. Breath taking sunrises and sunsets. Few lights so stars above the Gulf sea are 100 fold more than you would imagine. Walk the beach at night with the sound of the surf and the magnificent show of the stars. Gentle breezes cool the beach most of the year. Just enough activities to keep the children happy while the family enjoys the true splendor and enjoyment of the beach. Obviously we are in love with the island and the surrounding area, you will be too.
