Whether you come to relax, browse through quaint shops, or explore the natural beauty of Mentone, Chestnut Oaks is the perfect getaway for you.
Our cottage, nestled on the west brow of Lookout Mountain between the historic town of Mentone and Desoto State Park, has a wrap-a-round porch with rockers to enjoy the breathtaking view.
Even though our cottage is equipped with satellite TV which means you won't miss your favorite ball game in the fall, most of you will leave it off to enjoy your restful surroundings. The large porch is the perfect place to enjoy the cool shade of the trees in the summer and colorful fall. The winter months reveal the beauty of the valley below and the ridges in the distance.
Family, friends, or just the two of you can enjoy the rustic pine paneled 'gathering room' where you can read books, play cards or board games, watch TV, or cook up something is the fully equipped kitchen. On a chilly day enjoy a fire in the gas log stove on the stone hearth. There is a small stone patio with a charcoal grill for your cookouts.
The two bedrooms each have a queen sized bed with linens and warm comforts. Each room has storage space in chest of drawers and good closet space. There's a cot in one bedroom. The sofa opens to sleep two if needed. The two bathrooms are equipped with towels, tissue, and hand soap.
The cottage is located 4.6 miles from downtown Mentone and 2 miles from Desoto State Park. Some of the many activities available for you include incredible water falls, hiking, horseback riding at the Dude Ranch, snow skiing at Cloudmont, and golf at Lil Mole Run. Go to Desoto State park or the Canyon Center for more information on events provided. Try the shops in Mentone. Don't miss the antiques at White Elephant, the art at Kamama's, or the pottery at Miracle Pottery.
If you don't want to cook at the cottage, try some of the wonderful restaurants in Mentone. Some of our favorite eats are found at Wildflower Cafe, J. Spencers, Moonlight Bistro, Mentone Springs Hotel, and special treats at Kamamas.
My husband and I love the Mentone area, and in the past we enjoyed staying in rented cabins and the state park. We live 2 hours away, and in 2005 we purchased a cabin of our own on the west brow. We enjoy the area so much, we purchased land and built another cottage for renters and 'spill over' room for our family gatherings. Our cottage is managed by Susan Collins with Southern Properties Agency.

Several years ago my husband and I fell in love with Mentone and this area of Lookout Mountain. We love the West brow view with its beautiful sunsets and distant sounds of the trains traveling in the valley to Chattanooga. In 2006, we purchased land directly across from Comer Boy Scout Camp on Desoto Parkway (County Road 89) and built our Chestnut Oaks in the quaint Mentone style on the edge of the west brow.
My husband and I stayed here this fall and loved every second of it. The cabin was spotless; as clean and fresh as if it were brand new. The bed was comfortable and soft enough for me. When we stayed, the leaves had not fallen yet, so you really could not see down the mountainside to the valley but the trees around the property and the road leading to it was beautiful. It was very close to Desota State Park, Mentone and Fort Payne which were all wonderful. I cant wait to return.
You never know what you will really get when you book online. We were very pleased with our stay. It's location is central to various attractions in the area. Bedrooms were nice size. We would stay there again. My only suggestion is to add another small couch or love seat in the living area. Other than that... plenty of room in this 2/2 cabin.
This is the cutest cabin. It is two bedroom and they are large. The kitchen and living room has a large enough space to mingle in both areas. The porch is fantastic. The valley was too smoky from wildfires for us to really see the view but it seemed that it would be a great one. You do have cabins on each side of you. They are far enough away to still feel private. You may hear them talk simply because it is quiet here and they might can see you from porch in places.
All in all, I loved it. Beds were very comfortable. We didn't have many pans to cook in but this is expected. Fireplace is easy to work but be careful turning off because it gets hot to touch.
I would highly recommend. Oh and very clean!
Our stay at Chestnut Oaks was perfect. The house was clean and well stocked. The bedrooms were very comfortable and well appointed. We are outdoor people and the proximity of Desoto Falls and Park and Little River Canyon gave us so much to do. The crossroads that is Mentone is delightful even though the old historical hotel has burned down. The restaurants are great, especially The Sunflower Cafe. We plan to return this winter.
My husband and I rented the cabin for a short trip to the area. We absolutely loved the cabin! The porch is perfect for sitting and reading, drinking coffee, or just doing nothing! It was convenient to both Mentone and Fort Payne, so there were many options for food, shopping, etc. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking here although we were there in late August. I can't begin to imagine what it must be like in the fall months when the leaves are changing colors! The cabin was spotless and just as described. Dealing with the manager couldn't have been any easier! We would love to rent this cabin again in the future!
My husband and I and a family friend spent the weekend in this beautiful cabin. We really enjoyed the spacious living area and the view from the deck. We will definitely stay here again.
Mentone is a small, historic resort town atop Lookout Mountain. It is home to numerous camps and Little River winds through the area. Desoto State Park and Little River Canyon Center offer many opportunities for outdoor activities.
