We are a Husband & Wife who love to build homes in rare locations. We both love and enjoy Boating in the surrounding waters. We have made SW Florida home for some 18 years now. We built this home soon after we found this beautiful island. We think it is a rare diamond treasure that very few people ever find. We have built many homes ourselves but this is our Pride & Joy! It is hard to believe one can be so remote and relaxed yet still so close to the shopping, movies and restaurants we all want to find on occasion. We love the water Play Ground of this area and the endless days of perfect warm tropical weather.
Randy Crosby purchased this house in 2006
You will NOT find another Home for rent like this on any other Island or location in SW Florida. If you love Nature, love Privacy, love Boating, love Fishing and love the BEACH~ You MUST see this place!!!
We can help to arange Water Taxi Service for you To & From the Pine Island Mainland. Provisioning Service is also available from the local Grocery Store on Pine Island. We do all we can to help your stay be the most amazing vacation you have ever had.
Our vacation at Sandy Seagull Hideaway was absolutely perfect and exactly what the doctor ordered for peace and relaxation. We took the 2-minute ride by golf cart to the gorgeous shell covered beach every day. We felt like we were the only people on the island. We also enjoyed taking the cart through the lush greenery to the State Park. We were thrilled with the wildlife we saw; especially Jeffrey the Tortoise and dolphins at the beach.
Randy Crosby picked us up and became an instant friend as he drove us to Publix to pick up our groceries and then showed us around Pine Island while we waited for Captain Emily to arrive to ferry us to the island (we were earlier than expected). Randy and his wife poured much love into the Sandy Seagull and it shows in the details. The house has many amenities you don’t typically find in a rental home. The furniture is much nicer in person than the photos portray, the kitchen is loaded (even a sharp Chef’s knife!), and the beds felt like we were in an expensive hotel. The plush white towels and plenty of pillows and blankets made us feel so cozy.
You’ll find plenty of books and games in the house. I told my husband I didn’t want to leave until I could read all of the books. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible.
We agree with the other comments here about not needing much clothing and shoes. The days were warm & nights were cool when we were there so we lived in our bathing suits during the day and lightweight pants and a lightweight sweatshirt in the evenings.
I suggest being very precise with the grocery list you fax to Publix noting “1 each” or “1 pound” for each item. Luckily I noticed that they had only pulled 1 case of sparkling water instead of the 4 that I ordered so we were able to get enough before we left the store.
We look forward to visiting this piece of paradise again sometime. There really is nothing like it!
This was our second trip to the Sandy Seagull, and it was just as wonderful as the last one. I was impressed yet again by how immaculately clean, well-equipped, meticulously maintained, and comfortable the home is. We've been coming to Cayo Costa for years, and this is far and away our favorite rental home on the island -- if it were possible, we'd stay there every single time we visit!
Some of the details that help make the Sandy Seagull especially comfortable are the excellent drinking water (it saves SO much weight and space to not need to bring drinking water with us, plus it's just so convenient to have good water on tap), the excellent beds and linens, the well-equipped and well-designed kitchen, and the solar hot tub. The cart trailer for getting down to the beach is also exceptionally spacious, which is great for a large group, and the pool table is a fun bonus. Having both a washer and dryer is also super-convenient and allows for lighter packing. We also really enjoyed the two hammocks, the screened porch, and the stunning sunset views from the top deck. The house is quite roomy, and though it says it sleeps 6 (and we had 6), I wouldn't hesitate to visit with a larger group -- there's plenty of room to set up air mattresses or cots.
A few practical recommendations: put on sunscreen, then sunscreen again. You can't be too careful in Florida sun. Bring a good first aid kit and sunburn gel, just in case, but otherwise pack light -- you really don't need much more than swimsuit, beach towels, a couple changes of clothes, and a single pair of shoes, plus of course your food. A small cooler for the beach comes in handy, too.
We had a fantastic trip and can't wait to come back again!
Our visit to the Crosby's Sandy Seagull Hideaway was far and away our most relaxing Florida vacation ever. From the moment I read the other reviews on VRBO, I knew that this was going to be a special experience and our week there did not disappoint!!! We brought 2 boys, ages 6 and 8 (who both cried when we left). Every morning I would wake up and think that we could not possibly have as great of a day as the one before, yet each day we found something amazing that made each day unique. Manatee, dolphin, gopher tortoise, octopus, nesting snowy plover, puffer fish and I could go on and on.
The home itself is delightful, well stocked and off the grid. My husband and his sister were intrigued by the power supply, water pump, etc. and although none of us admitted it, we were all challenged to not trigger the generator each day (a great excuse to leave the TV off). The home was very clean, neat, and nicely decorated.
Some practical advice: bring less clothing and less shoes (one pair of flip flops is all that you need). Quickly check your order from Publix before you arrive, because they made many mistakes but there was nothing we could do once we were on the island (charged us correctly but we maybe got 1 instead of 2 or the wrong brand or size, or we thought we were buying one pound of an item such as tomatoes or onions and they sent us one piece instead of a pound). Don't worry about carrying so much water because the home has a reverse osmosis filtration system in the kitchen. And word to the wise, if you are from the Midwest like us, do not forget to bring steel leaders for fishing. We were not expecting that fish with teeth would bite through our line!!!
Thank you Crosby's for the use of your wonderful home. We met you in passing from the kayaks and Emily's boat but we hope to have the chance to meet you and thank you in person next time!!!
The Crosby's have a beautiful, well maintained home on this magical, 'off the grid' island. Everything was perfect; the house is very well stocked; we didn't 'want' for anything. The short ride to the beach on the provided gulf cart was the beginning to each beautiful and sunny day. I cannot say enough about how beautiful the island and the beaches are, just amazing.
We had to postpone this trip from April to October, and the owner was very understanding about this. We were so glad to finally arrive, and felt the cares of the world melt away! It is wonderful to have no traffic, and very few people! The weather was beautiful. We were able to see dolphins, a manatee, hermit and horseshoe crabs, sea slug, and more. We hated to leave, but hope sometime to visit again. We enjoyed getting to know Randy a little bit better on the way back to the airport. Of all the Cayo Costa rentals we researched, this one has the most value for the $$ spent.
The 'Sandy Seagull Hideaway' , beach house is an excellent spot to walk the beach, collect shells, sightseeing by golf cart or walking the trails of the State Park only a short distance north on the Island. We have a pool table and solar hot tub for visitors to enjoy. Come with your own boat and enjoy the water playground of the Gulf and Barrier Islands that surround this one of a kind vacation home. This home is Solar Powered and completely Off Grid yet it has abundant Solar Hot water, Satellite TV, is clean and comfortable and fully accommodated for your convenience.
*** Accessible By Boat ONLY, Water Taxi or Own Boat are other options.
