“The Sanctuary” is a lovely, secure six-unit gated garden complex over which huge pepper trees spread year-round leafy branches. My condo, located on the top (3rd) floor, is flooded with sunlight and has a spacious, private rooftop patio.
Situated at the end of a double cul-de-sac in a lively family neighborhood, this condo is very safe and conveniently located. It's an easy 5-minute flat walk to the farmer's and artisan's market, and a few more to the Jardín, the central plaza of San Miguel.
My condo is especially light and airy, since the sala-comedor (living-diningroom) has two large arched glass doorways, one with southern exposure and the other facing west - the dappled afternoon sun is filtered by the delicate leaves of the pepper tree all year rouond. There are round porthole-like windows in the front room and bedroom, a large rectangular window and skylights in the well-furnished kitchen. Skylights also provide extra illumination in the bedroom which has a large arched doorway that opens directly to the plant-filled passageway, and in the adjoining bathroom, which also has a light well in the corner.
The bedroom has a queen-sized bed with a very comfortable Sealy Posturepedic mattress and two reading lamps on either side. There is a large closet facing the bed and a smaller one to the side; plus a little study nook with a computer desk and chair. The bathroom has a shower and large bathtub finished with hand-painted tiles from nearby Dolores Hidalgo.
The kitchen is completely equipped, with a full-sized refrigerator, stove with 4-ring range and oven, microwave, toaster-oven, blender, plenty of counter space, pots and pans, cooking utensils, and complete table settings for four.
The frontroom furnishings include traditional textiles, mostly from Chiapas and Oaxaca; a comfortable cushioned equipal sofa and chairs (pre-Hispanic indigenous wood and leather design); a hand-carved dining table and chairs; and a fold-out foam futon sofa-bed.
Plant-filled outdoor passageways run along the front (west) and side (south) of the apartment. The rooftop terrace, partially covered and protected from high winds by a row of windows on two sides, is a perfect place to catch the first rays of the morning sun, the last of the setting sun; and the starry skies all night. It is large enough for gatherings or outdoor meals.
The private outdoor spaces of this condo are especially nice, since the extensive gardens and tall trees of the Quinta Loreto, to the south, add to the sense of being surrounded by greenery.
I was a resident of San Miguel for 16 years, and I loved this home best of all the dozens of places I lived. Come and have your spirit refreshed and renewed by all that San Miguel and this condo have to offer.
I am a Japanese American writer, graphic designer and translator. I have lived in Mexico since 1993.
Holly purchased this condo in 2000
I have rented many different lovely and not-so-lovely homes in various parts of San Miguel. When I turned the corner of the cul-de-sac on which this condo is located and saw the huge pepper tree at the end, I knew I wanted to iive there. When I saw the top floor apartment on the east side of the courtyard, flooded with sunlight (the main reason I moved to Mexico), I knew that I wanted to live there forever, so I borrowed money to buy it! But in recent years I have developed problems in my hips, so I have decided to retire in the countryside in a one-story home ... but I'm always happy to visit my Sanctuary (the bannisters are good and strong so I can still make it up and down the stairs easily).
The SUNLIGHT - through the three large arched glass doors, through the round porthole windows, through the skylights in the ceiling, in the plant-filled
passageways and on the rooftop terrace patio.
Also it's a great family neighborhood with lots of kids who like to help the foreigners, and the other owners and renters in this complex are also on vacation or retired so you get the best of both worlds.
Exceptional! I had two additional rentals in San Miguel which were problematic because the owners, in Canada, took advantage of me. This home and the San Miguel owner are both treasures.
This was our first trip to San Miguel de Allende, and we're very glad we chose this condo. The large arched windows let in lots of sun and provide a nice view of the terrace with all its potted plants. The upper terrace has a lovely view of the church in the main square and is especially pretty at night with all the lights of the city glowing. We loved the fact that the condo is in a Mexican neighbourhood, with kids running and playing and people going about their everyday lives. We found a wonderful breakfast spot around the corner, with coffee to die for! The market is very close by and open every day should you care to pick up some food or handicrafts. We didn't do any cooking, as there are so many great restaurants in town, but there is a full sized fridge, stove and microwave, as well as bottled water. The main square is a short, pleasant walk away, in fact, we walked everywhere in San Miguel de Allende. The streets are cobble stoned which makes it very charming, but I would advise against high heels. The condo was a good size for the two of us, with a comfortable bed, lots of closet space and a decent sized bathroom. The wifi worked great and the fireplace came in handy on cool nights in January. The condo is very secure, with a locked door to the street, and being on the top floor means the condo is very private, as well as letting in all that light. There are a few flights of stairs to go up, which was no problem for us, but not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Holly was great to deal with and cheerfully helped with all of our first timer questions. We hope to return to Holly's place in charming San Miguel de Allende some day.
I booked this condo, without knowing anything about San Miguel de Allende, and met an old friend. We loved the location! And the walk to the centro/el jardin was enjoyable and easy. Food in this city is delicious and fresh. The birds and sunlight in the morning were lovely, and the view of the Cathedral from the deck up top was beautiful. Very quiet, and simple beauty. We loved it, we will come back, I am sure, maybe for a wedding:)
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our one week stay in "The Sanctuary". Though San Miguel is a busy city, the condo was amazingly quiet. We looked out to see big trees, and heard cooing doves and other birds in the daytime and crickets at night. (and some church bells as well of course) The location was "genuine" among local families, which we really liked. It didn't take long to walk to Le Jardin. If you are there in the winter, it gets chilly at night and early morning-bring a sweater/light jacket.
This was a fantastic place to stay in a fantastic city. Holly and her team were very welcoming and helpful and the casita was just right for the two of us for the month. Even upon return home, I continue to feel the magic of this wonderful place and that makes my life here feel more alive as well.
We arrived to San Miguel De Allende with many recommendations where to go and what to see, however my main wish was to be quiet and rest. The Sanctuary was a perfect place for doing that. Just staying in, making my meals in the well equipped kitchen, sitting on the private porch and viewing the tolling bells from the roof tops. I will be back.
