About Tom Hess

I grew up in Michigan and went to college at Michigan Technological University. I currently work for a pharmaceutical company in Princeton, New Jersey

Tom Hess purchased this cottage in 1963

Why Tom Hess chose Northern Michigan

My parents built this property in the 60's. I have been coming up to Northern Michigan for over 50 years. Even though I now live in the Philadelphia area, I continue to come back every year to enjoy the wildlife, views and stunning sunsets on Lake Michigan

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is located in a private association just off M=119 (the Tunnel of Trees). This allows a very peaceful and quiet environment. You can walk and enjoy the beach without crowds. The fire pit on the beach allows you to view the unbelievable star display. The cottage has enough bedrooms and bathrooms to sleep multiple families. You are 1 mile away from the quaint store and shops in Good Hart. You are in close proximity to Mackinaw Island, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and the Star Park in Mackinaw City.

Peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful setting!!! The cottage is in the middle of a woods with Lake Michigan right out your back door. The views are breathtaking! The cottage is fully equipped and has everything you could possibly need. Saw lots of wildlife. If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay with lots of options for shopping & sightseeing, this is the place for you. Really enjoyed Moose Jaw Junction restaurant. Hope to be able to come back again next year.

Relaxing Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

The views of Lake Michigan from this cottage are beautiful but once you wander down to the beach it is breathtaking! Our three college kids enjoyed our nightly fires near the beach. Roasted hot dogs can't be beat! The ping pong table got a workout with some heated games. Short drives took us to Mackinaw City for golf and Petoskey for shopping. The Tuesday night Perch on the Porch at the Crow's Nest is a must for a great meal out. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals. The beds were comfortable and it was peaceful drifting off to sleep with the sound of the waves on the beach.

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

Great location in the middle of "tunnel of trees". Home was clean, beautiful fireplace with plenty of wood to burn. Really enjoyed being able to sit out on the deck and catch the views of the lake. Short walk to beach, would love to come back in the summer months but if you like fall colors...this is the place for you!

Wonderful cottage right on Lake MI

  • 5 of 5

We visited with a group of ladies going on the Harbor Springs Cycling classic through the Tunnel of Trees. The location was perfect for us (right on the route) and we loved staying right on lake Michigan. Our favorite part was sitting down by the beach and watching the sun set. The cottage was spacious - all four of us had our own rooms and we enjoyed having wine by the fire and on the deck overlooking the lake. Thank you for a perfect stay!

Absolutely peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

This comfortable house was perfect for our reunion of 8 college friends. All in our 60s, the house and deck were accessible including grab bars in the full baths and ramped for the wheelchair. Big enough for individual quiet time while still being open for group gathering. Loved, loved, loved the deck, the views and the beach. Internet and cell service was intermittent but easily available in Good Hart (1.4 mi south). We would definitely recommend and will be back!

Peaceful and calming location!

  • 5 of 5

First off, the owner was very accommodating and kept in contact with me during the months leading up to our arrival. That being said, this property is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Spacious rooms is an understatement! Very secluded yet not very distant to towns like Indian River, Petosky, Harbor Springs, and Mackinaw City.

Newer appliances in the kitchen, plenty of cookware and dishes.Windows everywhere so no need for a/c as it was always very comfortable...even in the large loft area.

Wonderfully softl beds and comfy quilts throughout. I can say that I have never had soooo many nights of sound sleep in one week like I did here. Maybe it was the soothing sounds of Lake Michigan waves crashing on the beach...which you will hear from the bedrooms.

The back deck off of the living room area provides some incredible views of the lake! From there you are only a short walk down to the beach. I've seen other reviews commenting on the beach. Let me tell you, if you bring some old tennis shoes or watershoes...you can definitely swim from this beach. Water is clean, clear, and shallow enough for quite a distance. My oldest daughter, 11, didn't even wear shoes and managed to navigate out along the larger rocks with no problem and swam in the brisk waters.

Sunset's on this beach are serene! Fire pit and PLENTY of firewood provided by the owner.

Limited cell service but I appreciated this!!! The times I did get signal...just meant I had to respond to work emails. Yuck! The narrow stone pathway in and out of this area really keeps road traffic to an absolute minimum. Nobody is joy riding down to the area.

If quite seclusion and spending quality time with your family with little outside interruption is what you're looking for, then this is the place for you!!!!!

I look forward to staying here again very very soon!!!!!! Lot's of space for our party of 9. Never felt crowded at all!!!
