About Tom Hess

I grew up in Michigan and went to college at Michigan Technological University. I currently work for a pharmaceutical company in Princeton, New Jersey

Tom Hess purchased this cottage in 1963

Why Tom Hess chose Northern Michigan

My parents built this property in the 60's. I have been coming up to Northern Michigan for over 50 years. Even though I now live in the Philadelphia area, I continue to come back every year to enjoy the wildlife, views and stunning sunsets on Lake Michigan

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is located in a private association just off M=119 (the Tunnel of Trees). This allows a very peaceful and quiet environment. You can walk and enjoy the beach without crowds. The fire pit on the beach allows you to view the unbelievable star display. The cottage has enough bedrooms and bathrooms to sleep multiple families. You are 1 mile away from the quaint store and shops in Good Hart. You are in close proximity to Mackinaw Island, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and the Star Park in Mackinaw City.

Private and rustic cabin with beautiful views of the lake through the trees.

Great northern Michigan location! About 20 minutes from Harbor Springs and 8 minutes to Cross Village. Nice restaurants and shopping, but remote and private too!

Private, Serene, Beautiful...

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the house, it had a nice layout with plenty of room for all of us.

There was a little walk down to Lake Michigan, but the path was like a mini hiking path through the woods and down some wooden stairs. We enjoyed it, just a little nature adventure to the lake.

It was very private and peaceful. We were the only ones on the beach for our entire stay except for an occassional person walking by on the shore. The beach is rocky and not the best for swimming, but it was doable with water shoes.

Great overall experience.

The owner was very attentive and prompt.

Beautiful Setting

  • 3 of 5

We had a girls weekend here and it was fun. It was a bit of a walk to the beach if you have trouble walking. There were a few more steps than we had anticipated, but not bad if you are used to hiking. There's no internet and our GPS had a hard time finding the cabin since it is way back in the woods. My only other complaint was the musty smell in the cabin. If you are allergic at all, this may bother you. Other than that, we had a nice time. I highly recommend the restaurant "Legs" just a few miles north of the cabin. Thank you Tom!

Awesome place to relax

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely awesome place to relax. Nice private walks on the beach, or relaxing on the deck. Fireplace was great as temps dipped. Nice large kitchen area, as well as the entire house. We will be going back, as well as taking more family in the future.

Beautiful slice of Lake Michigan pie.

  • 5 of 5

Our 3 generation (ages 20 to 90) family vacation was enjoyed by all. I loved rock hounding on the beach. We walked the shoreline, sunned and read at the shore. We were all lulled by the sound of the surf. Everyone enjoyed the beach fires and star gazing. Spotting the eagles that nest around the point was a highlight. One evening my husband and I were lucky enough to see a fox trotting down the beach; we watched it until it disappeared around the point.

Other reviews talked about swimming so I'll weigh in as well. If you wear river shoes or an old pair of sneakers you can walk out to where you're able to swim. Using a boogie board to get you out to where it's deep enough to swim also works. The water is fairly shallow; I swam quite a way out but it was never over my head. If you "play" in the water as opposed to swimming, the rocks might be a problem. There are 2 local township or county beaches that were nice alternatives. (I personally loved the rocks, but I do like rock hounding....).

The cottage was comfortable and spacious. Having a dishwasher and a washer and dryer was a bonus. The real feature for this cottage is the beautiful Lake Michigan location. It's quiet, beautiful, and relaxing. The property as well as the surrounding villages of Good Hart and Cross Village facilitate "down time." I look forward to a return visit.
