About Carol Ames

I was born and raised in Michigan and have always appreciated a warm-weather get-away, especially a Michigan winter escape. For years I have searched for my dream, warm-weather destination, and I chose Culebra as the spot I want to retire to. For me, Culebra offers all the features I have searched for: incredible beaches, some of the best snorkeling and scuba right off the shores, waves for surfing, sailing and kayaking adventures, hiking, small enough to be called quaint, and warm, friendly people.

Carol Ames purchased this house in 2011

Why Carol Ames chose Culebra

I have traveled throughout the Caribbean searching for my dream, warm weather destination; I have found it in Culebra. Culebra Casa Azul offers cozy island decor with breath-taking ocean views and breezes. Casa Azul is centrally located to all beaches, closest being the renowned, must-see Flamenco Beach.

What makes this house unique

Culbra Casa Azul offers the ability to rent the 2 bedroom unit by itself, the attached 1 bedroom studio by itself, or both the 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom studio.

A budget friendly option, needs updating

  • 3 of 5

We were a group of 8, two families with 4 kids total, so we used the whole property for a last minute visit to Culebra. I admit at first I was skeptic about the place, from the previous reviews, but at the end it served the purpose for us. The owner Carol, was available as soon as we contacted her, (in our case last minute) and the booking was done easily. We really liked the quiet neighborhood and we loved the back terrace with a beautiful view. The house had working wifi, and other amenities such as beach chairs and umbrella. Having said that, it is important to bear in mind that the place needs some upgrading (worn down /outdated). Another important point is that land transportation in Culebra can get expensive, since it is not a beachfront property, you would need a jeep/golf cart/bike to move around. In my opinion with some basic tlc this place would be getting way more better reviews.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed Casa Azul and Culebra! I spent 2 weeks in August 2015 and did many updates to the 2 and attached 1 bedroom studio; the attached 1 bedroom studio updates included: new flooring throughout, new bathroom sink and tile work in shower, new walls in bathroom, new loveseat pull out bed sofa, and new deck on the back!!! Sincerely, Carol Ames, Owner Casa Azul

Dirty Casa Azul

  • 1 of 5

My wife and I have travelled throughout the Caribbean for almost twenty years. In that time we have stayed in accommodations ranging from motels and bed and breakfasts, to villas and boats. We certainly don’t consider ourselves, nor have we ever been described as high maintenance. In fact, we have our own recreation property that has no hydro, no running water and uses a composting toilet.

Having said that, Casa Azul was by far the most unclean and rustic place we have ever stayed. It is classified in it’s VRBO listing as a “studio”, but would be better described as a modified utility shed, measuring approximately 20’ by 12’.

The size or dimensions by themselves were not the issue, rather the misrepresentation of it by it’s outdated photographs and lack of cleanliness.

We contacted Carol the owner several times throughout our eight night stay to advise her of the garbage we found behind the bar fridge (which included a broken drinking glass) as well as the twenty four (24) hornet nests attached to the awning above the doorway and around the entire outside of the building. Carol admitted that this was “unacceptable” and said she would send her caretaker Rogelio over to address the problems. We never did see him, however the broken glass disappeared while we were away the next day ( I cut my toe on a shard of broken glass left on the floor as a result), the remainder of the garbage ( an empty pop bottle under the bed and the doorless closet full of half empty paint cans and cardboard boxes ) remained untouched.

The shower had mould on the fabric curtain, it was dirty and very small. We often opted to use the public shower at the beach rather than use it.

An exterminator showed up three days after we complained, but not before we killed four hornets inside and my wife had been stung once.

I have photos to substantiate every claim that we’ve made.

Carol stated she would check back with us, but after my wife expressed her disappointment with our accommodations, we never heard from her again during our stay.

The first place we checked in the same area and price range was immaculate and offered additional amenities such as satellite television, full sized fridge, and a balcony. We would have moved there if there had been a vacancy and we had not prepaid Carol.

I would strongly recommend that you check several other accommodations in this area for a comparison before choosing Casa Azul.

Owner's Response: I apologize for the wasp nests on the outside of Casa Azul's 1 Bedroom Studio. As soon as you notified me of the wasp nests, I informed my caretaker and he immediately came to the property and removed what he could, but he needed the assistance of the exterminator; my caretaker called and talked with the exterminator while in the front yard of Casa Azul's Studio and the exterminator was not able to assist until 2 days later. Culebra is a very small island with limited services and things take longer. As far as the broken glass you informed me of behind the refrigerator, I immediately informed my caretaker of it and on the same day, he cleaned up from behind the refrigerator. You were not there the both times my caretaker showed up; hopefully you were out enjoying the beautiful beaches of Culebra. I disagree with you about the Studio. The 1 picture I have of the studio (picture #6) on is very true to life. Casa Azul's Studio is advertised as a Studio with a double bed, a twin bed, a kitchen sink, a mini refrigerator, a coffee maker, and a bathroom with a shower, no tub. Casa Azul is a 2 bedroom Villa with attached 1 Bedroom Studio as advertised. The 2 Bedroom Villa rents for $150/night or $895 weekly and the 1 Bedroom Studio rents for $85/night or $525/week. There is a substantial difference between the amenities of Casa Azul's 2 Bedroom Villa and the 1 Bedroom Studio. Both Casa Azul's 2 Bedroom Villa and the Studio have wi-fi for guests; no television or cable is advertised. Regarding the soiled shower curtain, this review is the first I have heard of this and I have had my caretaker replace the shower curtain. I simultaneously have a couple staying in the 2 bedroom villa, actually from 1/1/15 - 3/31/15; during the same time that you stayed your 8 days. My guest at Casa Azul's 2 Bedroom Villa confirmed for me that my caretaker did attempt to take care of the wasp nests on the outside of the Studio and that the exterminator was immediately called to remedy the situation. My guests in the 2 Bedroom Villa have toured the Studio and have even made reservations for their friends to stay in the Studio. Sincerely, Carol Ames, Owner Casa Azul

Great overall experience, although the service was lacking

  • 3 of 5

We stayed for 2 nights at Casa Azul. The best parts of this place are the location, the well-stocked kitchen, ample sleeping space and a nice mattress in the largest of the 2 bedrooms. Also, the back porch was a sweet place for breakfast. Drawbacks were mosquitos that had us swatting like crazy throughout the night. The other drawback was snippy service from the owner. She was inaccessible and condescending when we did end up getting ahold of her. This place is great for a family or group of people who want to prepare meals at home and not spend TONS of time at the beach, although it is nicely located for Zoni Beach.

Casa Azul - April 5th 2014

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for one night in the efficiency unit. The unit was small but for two people comfortable. The unit was certainly not large enough to lounge in but who wants to be inside when on Culebra. The units proximity to the airport, store and Flamenco beach coupled with the nightly rate made it an excellent place to hang your hat.

Great place and location

  • 5 of 5

Casa Azul was as promised on the description and the pictures were accurate. It was clean and comfortable. We only rented the main house, not the studio. When we contacted the owner, to get our keys and to figure out the internet/tv connection, she was very helpful. We ended up not being able to use the internet but we really didn't need it. We also decided to leave a bit later on the last day and the owner was able to accommodate us with late check out. You need a car as mentioned on the site. There is plenty of parking for more than one car if multiple families rent the place. Great view from the front and the back of the house. We would definitely stay there again.
