Come experience rural Hawaii, just 45 minutes south of Kailua-Kona. Get away from the traffic and lights to gaze at the stars. Enjoy the peace and quiet; watch the dolphins and whales off the lanai. It is only steps to the very private Pebble Beach.
Kayak, scuba dive and snorkel on one of Hawaii's best kept secrets or you can take a great 15 minute hike to two black sand beaches where you can swim with the turtles. A King's trail will take you to an ancient cinder cone crater rim.
Bring the kids, have cookouts and stay in my awesome new home with amazing Hawaiian and Pacific Rim decor. The house has five bedrooms, each with a lanai, four bathrooms, a Jacuzzi, an outdoor shower, a den, a gourmet kitchen and a playground with a fort for the children.
We are close to many of Hawaii's treasures. It is just 20 minutes to the City of Refuge and the Captain Cook Monument. The green sand beach at south Point is 30 minutes away and it is a 90 minute drive to Volcano Park.

About Deanna Olivier
This is my dream home, which I'm happy to share with my guests. My place has some of the best snorkeling and kayaking on the island. Many guests say it was their favorite vacation ever!
Deanna Olivier purchased this House in 2004
Why Deanna Olivier chose Opihihale
The location is rural, you can see the stars at night. Away from it all, just a Peace of Heaven.
What makes this House unique
The bay is a place of birthing for the whales during whale season. If you hear strange noises at night, it is their mating sounds. 2014 our bay became a conservation bay, now a place where fish are left alone to replenish.

Peace of Kona
My wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our children and grandchildren for 8 glorious days at this lovely home. From the first day we were enamored with the layout of the home and it's ocean front location. The home was well appointed with antique and period furniture. We could have spent hours admiring all of the unique paintings and decorative items throughout every room of the home. The views from the several lanais were magnificent. A black pebble beach was just a few steps from the front door. Since the home is located at the end of the street, we had unobstructed views of the ocean and landscaping. The home was well stocked with all types of snorkeling equipment, surf and boogie boards, single and double kayaks which provided us with many hours of fun in the water and the opportunity to visit two more private black sand beaches a few minutes from the house.. The large lanai with a table for 7 gave our family the opportunity of eating together outside. We have rented homes in the US and this was by far the best choice we have made. The pictures of the home on the VRBO website only gives a glimpse of the home's beauty and charm The lack of cable TV , limited wifi, and intermittent cell service were a blessing because our 15 and 12 year old grandchildren were weaned from their electronics for eight days. They both realized that they have fun with their family playing board games and having conversations. I highly recommend this property. My 12 year old granddaughter was so impressed that she wanted to write in in the owner's guest book. The only caveat to this review is that the access road to the home from the highway is definitely not for the faint of heart.
Thank you so much John for the lovely review! I am ecstatic that you guys had a lovely time and appreciated our home so much! Mahalo nui loa!
The house and location are exceptional. Off the beaten path. Great place for a family vacation. Clean and well equipped. Good access to the water which can be an issue on the big island. Worked well for a family of eight parents children and grandchildren. Would not hesitate to rent again. As my son said “the place rocks”. Pictures don’t do it justice.
Great property for a relaxing family vacation
This is a beautiful home in a great location. The house itself is spacious, wonderfully decorated, and has everything you need for a great vacation. You could literally just grab a few groceries and park here for a week without having to leave. We had a great time snorkeling, boogie boarding, and kayaking just steps from the house. It is a short easy walk to the unique black sand beach. The owners were wonderful and checked in with us to make sure everything was going well, and were just a phone call away if we needed anything. Would definitely recommend this home for a relaxing Big Island stay.
Overall, this home is wonderful. Spacious, well equipped, beautiful location. The house is just steps away from Pebble Beach. Great for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, etc. We saw whales and dolphins from the lanai. The "pebbles" are a little difficult to walk on barefoot (locals have no problem) but easily navigated with water shoes (which are provided by the host). There is a black sand beach just a 10 min easy hike away. Although a couple of days, the tide left black sand areas at Pebble Beach. There is another hiking trail right next to the house that leads to a volcanic cinder cone. If you are looking for a quiet retreat, this is it! My family of 10 people had plenty of space. Everyone enjoyed activities around the island during the day, and then met back up for family time each evening. The kitchen is wonderfully equipped. The host also has lots of "toys" available - kayaks, snorkel equipment, boogie boards, stand up paddle board, play structure for kids, ping pong table, hot tub and the list goes on and on! If you need shopping, restaurants, or nightlife close by, this may not be the place for you.
Restful retreat, Cradle to Waves
This spectacular vacation home is perfect for Big Island visitors who want to use it as a base for exploring the volcanoes, rainforests, and coffee plantations of the island, or for those who simply wish to stock the refrigerator and while away the days napping to the sound of crashing waves, reading a book on the deck or basking on the adjacent beach. Ms. Deanna Olivier is the gracious owner of this gem of a property. Her professionalism was immediately evident in her prompt communication when I was setting up the reservation. Once the reservation was finalized she sent a packet with a list of what to pack, suggested sightseeing destinations and recommended dining options.
Ms. Olivier is not only the owner of this home, she is also the talented interior decorator responsible for the décor which fuses the tropical island setting with images of the Indian subcontinent. The house is spacious with every amenity necessary to make this a true home away from home. The kitchen is well furnished and every utensil is exactly where you would expect it to be. A large deck with tiki torches and a grill wraps around the west side of the house which allows for elegant al fresco dining while watching the sun set over the ocean.
The property is not only stunning , but is unique among Big Island rentals in that it provides an oceanfront location with an adjacent beach. Much of the Big Island’s shores are composed of rugged volcanic rock, but the small beach next to this property allows for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing away from the crowds. The home has an abundant supply of snorkels, masks, and fins in all sizes to fit the entire family. There are also kayaks and boogie boards available for guest use.
I don’t think I could have found a more comfortable setting on the Big Island for my family’s Spring Break vacation. The size of the house provided our teenaged children ample space of their own, and the proximity to the ocean offered endless leisure opportunities for all. I only regret that we never actually met Ms. Olivier to thank her in person for her hospitality during our stay in her elegantly appointed beach home.
Beautiful house/setting, easily accommodated group of 8
The pictures of this place do not do it justice. When you drive down the long, very steep and windy road to get here you wonder what you are getting yourself into and then you open the door to this beautifully decorated house (reminded me of what I would imagine an expat house in India looks like) with views of the ocean from the dining room, kitchen, and one of the bedrooms, lanais everywhere, a hot tub, a hammock...it is amazing. We were a family of 8 - 2 little kids (5,9), 3 grandparents, and 3 adults. The house easily accommodated us sleeping wise and never felt crowded. It was clean and well stocked. My kids loved being a hop away from the pebble beach and played in the waves almost every day. We walked to the black sand beach once but my kids liked the pebble beach the best. The crater rim hike leaving from the pebble beach is nice (fyi, 7:45 is too late to start - hot and no shade!). The house is nicely situated for sightseeing in S. Kona - we went to the kula kai caverns, volcano national park, and the place of refuge. If you aren't a vegetarian, be sure to get some local grass fed beef and shaved ice from the Kealia ranch store. Check out the smoothies and baked goods (and great guacamole) at the S. Kona fruit stand. The only word of caution/thing I wish we did more of was plan our food a little better. This house is a little off the beaten path - an hour from Costco (and the airport), 30 min in either direction for groceries, and 15-20 min from restaurants. So if you can get most of your groceries for your stay on you way in definitely do that and then supplement here and there (there is a nice farmers market on Sun in Capt. Cook). We planned day by day and that wasn't really ideal for us. You could easily come to this house for a week and never go anywhere else - you have an amazing house, easy access to 2 beaches, hiking - or you can use it as a nice base and travel around the island. We didn't have a chance to meet Deanna in person but she was extremely responsive over email.
