Charm, comfort, convenience and location make this an ideal vacation spot.
Close to the ocean, far enough away from the ferry landing for peace and quiet, the first floor of this roomy 1916 cottage has a living room, sunroom with wrought-iron table and 4 chairs, and a 47-inch flat-screen TV with stereo sound, Blu-Ray and VHS player. Adjacent is the dining room, kitchen and pantry area. Down the short hallway is the first-floor bathroom with shower.
Upstairs is the master bedroom with queen-sized bed and TV, a second bedroom with 2 twin beds, and a third bedroom with twin-sized trundle beds. There are 2 twin-sized air mattresses with pump for extra company. The upstairs bathroom is complete with clawfoot tub.
Two portable air conditioners, one upstairs and one down, will keep everyone cool on those hot and humid (though rare) summer days and nights. In the cellar off the kitchen are a full-sized washer and dryer. The back yard has a Weber Spirit grill along with 4 Adirondack chairs and 2 tables.

About Janis B. Price
From the hook-and-eye window in the kitchen to the ceramic handles on the pedestal sink in the upstairs bathroom, Sisu retains its quaint style with modern convenience. It is far enough away from the ferry landing for peace and quiet, yet not too remote to be on city water, plus there is plenty of room with all the little built-in hutches and shelves around seemingly every corner.

Why Janis B. Price chose Peaks Island
Sisu is a 101-year-old cottage near the Back Shore of Peaks Island where the North Atlantic Ocean is visible all the way to the horizon. Guests can see and hear the tides come and go as well as breathe that salty air. Situated away from traffic and noise in a quiet cul-de-sac, guests can enjoy watching sailboats, lobster boats, fishing boats and large ocean-going vessels pass by.
What makes this Cottage unique
Sisu is located close enough to the ocean to see, hear and smell the ocean, but is not an oceanfront property. Sisu also has a very small yard. These two factors allow the owner to offer this charming island cottage for a lower weekly rent, making for an ideal island cottage experience. Its location is one of the main reasons I fell in love with this property, along with some antiquated but well-cared-for features that are still in excellent working order. Sisu is within walking distance of the 5th Maine Regiment Museum, which hosts concerts by local island talent or from away. In addition, there are bake sales, pancake breakfasts, and a variety of entertaining events. The 8th Maine hosts concerts as well and is right in back of the 5th Maine. With its location in a quiet cul-de-sac, guests at Sisu won't have traffic driving by at all hours of the day and night. It is a neighborhood of families who have vacationed here for years. It is a no-pet rental (except for service dogs, of course!), so guests sensitive to pet dander can be assured they will not have that worry here.

Wonderful, comfortable Cottage
We have been renting on Peaks for many years and Sisu topped the others. It was as pictured and clean and comfortable. It was so nice to be welcomed with wine, fruit and coffee, etc. What a surprise to find the house so well stocked with daily supplies and loved having matching dishes, bowls, glasses, etc. Everything was in adequate supply and seemed brand new. I had been concerned about how the quality of linens might be, especially since we were near the end of the season, but again things exceeded our expectations. The neighborhood was lovely and quiet. We look forward to renting again.
It was a pleasure having you, Roberta, and thank you for leaving the cottage as clean as it was when you arrived! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. That was my goal, and I hope to see you back next year if it fits into your plans!
Sisu - Perfect location and home away-from-home
Four of us enjoyed a week's stay at Sisu and could not have had a more enjoyable time in a home that was completely outfitted for relaxation and comfort. Every detail vacationers could want or desire was provided from fresh flowers and wine on arrival to a well-equipped kitchen for the fresh lobster dinners and a great gas grill. Having a washer and dryer was especially nice and a rare find at rental properties. The house was light & bright throughout with comfortable seating and a porch that invited lots of relaxing while looking at the ocean. The master bedroom was a special treat because of being able to see the ocean from the comfortable bed - what a way to awaken each day! This property was absolutely one of the nicest we've experienced whether on the U.S. east or west coast.
Thank you, Barbara! It was a pleasure having you. My goal was for you and yours to have an unforgettable stay on Peaks Island. That I succeeded makes me happy. I hope to have you as guests again in the future should your plans bring you back to Peaks Island!

Wonderful weekend in a special place
Sisu was a wonderful stay and well enjoyed by my family!
It was a pleasure having you and your family, Michael! And thanks for leaving it so clean. Have a great rest of your summer!
Clean, quiet, bright and cozy
I would recommend this property to anyone! Lots of great amenities like a washer/dryer, new kitchen appliances, comfy beds and seating. The location is gorgeous.
It was a pleasure having you and your family as guests. It's always so nice to come in to clean and discover that most of your work has already been done! I look forward to meeting you next summer!
Great little cottage tucked away just a short walk from Seashore Av without all the traffic.
Overalll it was really perfect for me. The tub upstairs was great. Fully equipped, clean kitchen, etc, The yard and parking are very small so not conducive to large family outdoor gatherings or parking anything more than a compact car and a golfcart (rent from Mike's Carts!!). That was also perfect for me. The neighbors were friendly and helpful and the owner was on-island for any questions that arose. (None did). Sisu is a very special place.
It was a pleasure having you, Tracey! From booking and then all the way through your stay was hassle-free and stress-free. Thank you for leaving the cottage in such excellent condition. I hope to have you as a guest again in the future if your travel plans include a trip to Peaks Island!

Very nice property that was perfect for our family of five.
Sisu is a very nice house with water views. It is on a very nice side street which is close to town but still very quiet. Janis was a great host, who provided a nice bottle of wine and coffee for our arrival. The house was very clean and had everything we needed to prepare meals for our group. We enjoyed sitting on the porch, using the Weber grill and just hanging out on the very comfortable furniture. We loved the different colored towels - great to keep thing straight in the family. Our stay was great and we will definitely book again!
I'm glad you and your family enjoyed your stay at Sisu. Having you as guests was a pleasure from the first contact to throughout your stay. I was hoping the different-colored towels would make it easier for each guest to know which ones were theirs, and finding that the dishwasher had already been run was a nice surprise, along with the rest of the cottage being left in very good condition. I would welcome you back and hope to have you as guests again in the future!
Peaks Island has many activities available in the summer. Golf carts can be rented a few hundred feet from where the ferry docks. There are also bicycles available for rental a few blocks from the ferry, including bicycles built for two!
In June there is PeaksFest, an island-wide celebration featuring a parade, pie-eating contest, a dog show that is not to be missed, and many quirky fun things to do. There are pancake breakfasts throughout the summer and local craft fairs with delicious baked goods made by some of the numerous outstanding cooks on the island.
Also in June is the Old Port Fest in downtown Portland, where you can enjoy live concerts, food stands, craft fairs, sidewalk musicians, fun for young and old alike. All summer, there are live concerts on the Maine State Pier. One should not miss a visit to Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. It is a beautiful place to picnic, fly a kite, and take in the spectactular views from the oldest lighthouse in Maine.
Within walking distance from the ferry on the Portland side are 5-star restaurants, chowder houses, sushi bars, pubs, ice cream parlors; food to suit any palate. There are also daily departures for whale-watching tours and deep sea fishing.
Also off-island are many scenic attractions. Kennebunkport is about an hour south. LL Bean in Freeport is about 30 minutes north, with lots of outlet stores. Further downeast is the Rockland/Camden area, very quaint villages and quintessential Maine. Farther downeast is Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, not to be missed but be forewarned about the summer traffic!
South of Portland in Saco there is Funtown Splashtown USA featuring water slides, pools and all sorts of entertainment for children and adults. In Old Orchard Beach you will find carnivals with ferris wheels, fried dough, live music, and a beach with soft sand for spending a lazy afternoon or having a picnic. Allow extra time for traffic going towards Saco.
Back on Peaks Island, kayaks are available for rental on Island Avenue, the main street on the island. There are also guided tours of the island and its history, including the Fifth Maine Museum and the Eighth Maine Museum. If you just want to relax and have some peace and quiet, have a seat in one of the Adirondack chairs on the front porch of Sisu and take in the views of the ocean.
September is a beautiful time of year on Peaks. It is less crowded on the island and on the ocean. These are some of the best boating days of the entire season. Some apple orchards are open where you can pick your own of several varieties of apples, buy home-made apple cider, pies, jam, syrup and also fudge. Some apple orchards feature petting zoos for children. Our favorite is Apple Acres Farm in South Hiram, ME.

There is room for an SUV on the right front lawn of the cottage and room for a golf cart between the front porch and lilac tree to the left of the walkway. I have uploaded new pictures where I have drawn in exactly where you can park. Guests are allowed to park on the graveled driveway to the left of the cottage (facing Sisu) as long as your vehicle tires are almost touching the wood posts between the gravel and grass closest to Sisu. This gives maximum use of the driveway to my neighbors who own the driveway. There were no problems with this last summer. 😊
