This mid-century modern home (1959) was purchased in 2012 and has undergone extensive renovations. Enter the front foyer through the retro-orange double doors and you'll be greeted by the open, loft-style living space, with great room, modern kitchen with all new appliances, a long, spacious table that seats up to 12 people. This is the perfect space for entertaining and gathering with your family. The floors are a sleek, grey concrete, and the entire back wall of the home features glass windows and French doors, overlooking a large concrete deck, with built-in sun shade canopy--and pool and mountains below. This is California living where the indoors and outdoors join one another in beautiful harmony.

Take a walk down the winding stairs to the lower pool deck, where ample pool furniture awaits your day of fun in the sun. The property is completely private and very spacious for large gatherings. The dark-bottom pool is tranquil and welcoming for a day of play or relaxation. (not heated)

The Master Bedroom has French doors that lead onto a private patio (which adjoins the very large outdoor patio to the main living space). This modern space is luxurious and overlooks the pool and the beautiful sunrise you can watch from the bed through all the windows overlooking the mountains/canyons. Relax in the brand new soaking tub, or start your day in the beautiful shower glimmering with Italian tile by Bisazza.

Each of the other bedrooms have their own private baths and have been given modern facelifts with different personalities--tranquil turquoise, spunky pink, city scape, and luscious lavender, all re-designed by the owner/interior stylist.

There is an entire studio downstairs that is wonderful for those traveling with a second family or other beloved companions who desire their own space at times. The studio has a separate entrance (but also an interior entrance and staircase that joins the studio with the house, if unlocked), and it's just steps from the pool. The studio has a kitchenette, its own bathroom, dining area and full living room with television. (Sleeps 5--queen bed and bunk bed with two single beds).

Overall, the house is warm, fun, simple, sleek, stylish and lovingly cared for. We are located in a residential neighborhood with easy parking both on and off the property and close to desirable beaches and tourist destinations. PARTIES ARE NOT PERMITTED. Why Kimberly chose San Diego County

I found this home in January of 2012 and knew that I loved it right away. It had not been cared for in quite a long time and needed a lot of love. So, I've taken time to bring it into the modern age while also trying to respect its age and character. It is a beautiful symmetry so far, and the guests we've had are loving its comfortable spaces and unique style (60's style, art gallery, sleek, modern--while still classic and vintage). It's a large property with several quiet places to relax, and the views are stunning. Wake up in the bedrooms to pink and orange sunrises painted across the skies, and eat dinner watching the sunset and all of its magic as it splashes color through the windows of the kitchen and great room. Makes smores at the firepit and make memories for a lifetime.

What makes this house unique

Some people think they want to be right on the beach or to step outside and walk to a restaurant or shop. We love this kind of experience too sometimes, but after looking to purchase a home in La Jolla for over a year, the one thing we began to realize is that the Shores and the Village have terrible problems with parking and traffic. We feel our location is unique because we can drive to the beach in five minutes, but when we want to take the kids to the zoo or Sea World or any other attraction in San Diego, we have very easy access to several major roads and highways without the traffic and the noise. Also, the views from the top of this hill are amazing. Every morning, there's a new shade of orange and pink; each night as we fall asleep to the lights glittering in the distance. It's magical. We build a fire in the fire pit nearly every night. Each experience each day, even cooking breakfast in the huge kitchen, feels like vacation. We are happy to share this with our guests.

We had a great weekend at your home! The eclectic group we had collected for a memorial weekend there all truly enjoyed the comfortable and stylish place that this home is! There was more than enough room for all the guests… And even for the one or two we hadn’t expected. The huge well equipped kitchen was amazing and really made a great central gathering spot. The pool while though the weather was WAY too cold to swim was lovely to look at. The bedrooms were ideal and suited beautifully to housing a large group of people with an array of ages and variety of tastes. The home’s feature we made most use of however, was the fire-pit! There were s’mores and hot dogs roasted and even a few songs. We truly had a wonderful time and due mostly to your home and the feeling of relaxation we had being in it! We can’t say enough thanks to you and your family’s generous hospitality and for sharing your lovely accommodations!

Best Weekend Ever!!

I invited my children and closest friends to help me celebrate my 60th birthday at this lovely La Jolla home. The views are spectacular, and the home has a huge open kitchen area where we could all sit together and eat, play games and catch up with each other's lives. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, so everyone had their own "space" but still felt connected to the common areas, it was just perfect. The owner is the nicest person, and she made sure we had all the information we needed to be safe and comfortable - I can't say enough good things about our experience, it was wonderful!

I hosted ten friends at this home as a way to

de-stress before an upcoming wedding. Upon arrival we were literally amazed at how clean and beautiful the homr was. The home is beautifully decorated. Each room has its own bathroom which is awesom to have when multiple women are trying to get "ready" at the same time. We had originally made plans to go into downtown La Jolla and eat/shop, but we quickly decided to just order food in and enjoy the massive home and yard. We had a wonderful time. I am excited to book another weekend to bring my young kids back. The home has plenty for them to do. Pool, jacuzzi, a fun swing, and many rooms for them to run around and play games in. Thank you kimberlu for being so hospitable !

Some local, some further away

Everything was excellent -- Location -- decor -- comfortable

We were sad we only got to spend a couple of night's at Kimberly's lovely home. First, we had a group of 15 people ranging in ages from 4-65. I think it is pretty difficult to find a big, open space to accommodate that many people and personalities, especially a beautiful home. This house had it all. Two refrigerators and two freezers gave us plenty of space to organize for all of the people and meals we wanted to cook together. The large breakfast bar was an amazing gathering spot everyday, and the outdoor covered dining was a hit with everyone. The children had a wonderful time organizing games in both the front and back yards. The Studio apartment below the home gave my in-laws a sense of privacy and quiet time. We loved the quirky decor throughout the home and that the kids had fun things to play with since they couldn't bring many toys. We could see from the photos that the front of the home was a bit more relaxed and neutral (a little more grown up) and the back of the home and bedrooms a little more colorful and playful. It fit our family fine. All the grown ups and adults were able to find a place that fit their needs, AND the beds were amazingly comfortable! We found everything to be matching the description and the photos. Someone had mentioned in a review about the home feeling worn in some places, but we didn't personally find that. Kimberly mentioned it's a house from the 60's, so we kinda expected some flaws and like that old fashioned style. We have rented a lot of vacation homes, and we find that the furniture and things tend to get pretty beat up by guests but that the true flavor of maintenance is the bedding and towels being fresh and and maintained. It's clear that Kimberly is on top of making sure things are updated in that department. Pillows, blankets, towels were all matching, soft, clean, fresh and felt and looked new. For us, that's pretty critical to comfort. It's helpful to have an owner that is constantly on property (I think she said she lives here when it is not rented) -- because it adds a personal detail that a "second home" kind of lacks when it doesn't get the owner's attention often enough. Overall, we were very pleased with the whole experience and hope to visit again next year. Thanks, Kimberly.

Great Host - OK Accomodations - Time Consuming Checkout

Host: I'll start by saying that Kimberly was very great to work with - responsive, understanding, flexible. We had family in town who were not flying out until late in the day and since checkout was at 10am, and she couldn't accomodate a late checkout she offered us access to a community pool down the road which was really sweet (even though we decided not to use). Also, we had a large group and planned to make all of our meals and cocktails at the house, so we had a lot of CostCo groceries and she couldn't accomodate a full checkin earlier than 4pm, but did offer to let us into the studio suite downstairs. That didn't work cause we didn't want to lug groceries into the downstairs apartment and then up the stairs into the main house, but it was nice of her to offer. Although I will say 4pm checkin is kind of late..

Accomodations: While some parts of the house were very nice (living room, outdoor areas, master suite) and had a luxury look/feel, many parts of the house were funky and outdated. Most of the bedrooms, for example, still have children residing in them (the family lives there when the house isn't rented), so they are not decorated very nicely. I felt bad asking my family memebrs who traveled from the east coast to pay hundreds of dollars to sleep in a weirdly decorated chilren's room with doll houses and whatnot - most of them said "wow the house looked so nice on VRBO but these bedrooms are terrible." Having said that, there are pictures on the listing where people should know what they're getting into before renting, but for what we paid per night, I kind of wish we would have found a house that was full on luxury. Also, a 4pm checkin and 10am checkout is a little unfair in my opinion. 11am and 3pm would seem much more standard and reasonable. I have friends who own many properties they rent out and they agreed that seems a bit early and late.

Checkout: Oh man, what a process. Each bedroom guests have to take all of sheeets and pillow cases off, put into a labeled mesh bag, and bring to the houses laundry room. Also all towerls have to be brought to the laundy room. This was really time-consuming and annoying since checkout is at 10am which is a little bit of a scramble to get up and out anyway, nevermind having to do what seems like it should be the cleaners job since we paid a cleaning fee and a 10am checkout and 4pm checkin leaves 6 hours for cleaning. I understand it's a huge house, but maybe hire a larger cleaning crew?

Owner's Response: I was told it was a "family get together." I came home to THIRTY TWO huge bags of leaking, overstuffed bags of trash that took more than an hour and a half to re-bag and drive to an offsite dumpster! They were full and stinking of every kind of alcohol imaginable. I can imagine why the "checkout process felt like it was lengthy" with that kind of clean up. The hot tub was trashed, they left the house, overall, a big dirty mess, and then lied about all of it. I had neighbors complain about the noise. Overall, from an owner's perspective, I would appreciate the ability to ban renters like these. As far as "badly decorated children's bedrooms," well... I have had past guests tell me that their grandchildren loved the rooms so much that they were going home to repaint rooms and order some supplies to duplicate. All the furnishings and decor are in the photos, so if someone were truly renting for a "family get together" as your reservation had indicated, Nikki, then the children's decor would not actually have been an issue. The truth is, as I later found out, is that the UCSD campus had dormitory move in assignments happening the weekend you rented, and you are a local that rented the house for one of the very many big parties that occurred around town. And when I charged you for the extra clean up time, you decided to write a spiteful review --- despite the fact that I have texts from you telling me how much everyone liked the house. By the way... the stain on the kitchen floor is likely pretty permanent. It isn't gatorade. I don't know what it is. But over time, as I rent my house, I will probably have people say, "outdated floor in kitchen," and I will remember always why people get to slam the house with being "outdated" when they so happily contribute to its demise. Anyone reading this, please understand, I pay my cleaners well. I have 3-4 things on a checklist to do on check out. Remove sheets from the beds. Take out the trash and load the dishwasher so that the hour long cycle can get started. I don't ask anyone do do laundry or anything crazy. They are simple things that I am always asked to do when I rent someone's house. They are NOT overwhelming -- unless you have 32 bags of alcohol related trash to bag up from a HUGE party -- so that would definitely be an issue. I am a loving homeowner who has always enjoyed sharing her home up until this summer and have ample reviews before this one to prove her comments are not true.

We are located in what we view to be the MOST convenient location to all of San Diego's most sought after attractions. Set just above La Jolla Shores, Windansea and the Cove are wonderful places to relax, dine in tiny neighborhood and trendy restaurants, shop the boutiques, surf, dream, see sea lions, build sand castles, watch the sunset from the cliffs. This location insulates you from the beach traffic of the La Jolla Shores, Windansea and Cove region. It's a quick jaunt to the beach, but you won't have to sit in daily traffic, as the house is at the top of the hill and provides easy freeway access for all of San Diego's other sites, such as Sea World, San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Mission Bay, Mission Beach, Downtown (Gaslamp), and so many other desired locations. Most parts of Los Angeles and Disney (Anaheim) are within two hours driving from this part of San Diego.

In addition to our close proximity to the 5 freeway and many beaches and attractions, our property is located 1/2 mile from the La Jolla YMCA and 1 mile from University California San Diego, Torrey Pines golf course and Scripps clinic/hospital.
