About the property

2 BR, 2 BA, 2200 sq. ft. home in tree filled Mission Canyon close to town

Our house has been off VRBO for the last two years because it has been permanently leased. With my tenant leaving, it is again available for vacation renting starting May 25, 2017. Having been with VRBO for over four years, we have had many very satisfied clients and favorable reviews. We take great pride in personally greeting our renters and making their stay as comfortable as possible. We welcome your inquiries and strive to respond to your questions and inquiries within 24 hours.

Enjoy three nights, a week, or months in this unique (2200 sq. ft.) private residence located in Santa Barbara's historic Mission Canyon on the banks of Mission Creek. This unusual house has large picture windows and skylights throughout that make it seem as if you are living outdoors or in a treehouse. Surrounded by a large garden of ferns, coastal live oak trees, maples, and redwoods, it is adjacent to the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens, and within walking distance to several hiking and bike trails and five minutes to numerous historic and cultural attractions such as the Old Mission (Queen of the Missions), Museum of Natural History, and others. The downtown area and renound beaches of Santa Barbara are only a 10-15 minute drive. The Santa Ynez Valley's Lake Cachuma Recreation Area, infamous wine country, and numerous horse ranches are only a scenic 30 minute drive over the picturesque San Marcos Pass Road.

About Dave Gledhill

The Owners, Dave and Patti, are long time residents of Santa Barbara. Dave is a third generation Santa Barbarian and Patti has lived in the canyon nearly her entire life. Dave is a retired U.S. Army officer and Computer Scientist. Patti is a well known Santa Barbara artist who specializes in woodblock prints (a.k.a. Woodcuts) and mosaics. You will see her mosaics at several institutions in town such as Cottage Hospital, the Maritime Museum, First Presbyterian Church, and the Botanic Garden. He and Patti are founders of the Wildling Museum of Art and Nature in nearby Solvang, CA and would be happy to provide you with guest tickets to see our latest exhibition.

Dave Gledhill purchased this house in 1982

Why Dave Gledhill chose Santa Barbara County

The property was originally built by Patti before we were married. It's location on the property and construction are unique in that there are no windows facing busy Mission Canyon Road. The entire focus of the house is inward, to the lush trees, ferns, and lush and Koi pond that comprise the central garden. It is a one owner house that we lived in and loved before moving next door to another house we own, where we can keep watch and maintain the one we now rent.

What makes this house unique

Our property offers all of the serenity and privacy of a mountain cabin while being only 10-15 minutes to downtown Santa Barbara and its renowned beaches. Enjoy an afternoon barbeque on the patio, morning strolls through its garden and Koi pond and the adjacent Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. View the beautiful garden below from the private patio off of the master bedroom on the second floor. The home is adjacent to a three acre private garden (not included) that can be rented for activities such as reunions, retreats, graduation parties or family gatherings.

You enter the house beyond the driveway along a natural rock pathway and pass a lovely pond with gorgeous koi.

The house may not look like much from the street view, but that just disguises what you find on the other side at the end of the pathway! It is a very comfortable, spacious, CLEAN, home with plenty of space and privacy for at least two couples and six people could work it out just fine if needed. The master suite at the top of the stairs is very large, the closet and master bath are very generous--there is another TV up there also. The bedroom on the ground level is smaller, but perfect for a single or another couple, with another full bathroom. The location, while not oceanside, nor with an ocean view, was really great after all. It is close the old mission, which is a very established and safe neighborhood, and within convenient distance to everything, including the beaches, wharf, breakwater, famous Courthouse, and State Street, where all the action is! Full kitchen so food preparation is easy, but with so many amazing restaurants in the area, we only ate breakfast in every day. Comfortable beds, great location, clean and surrounded by nature, natural landscape, and trees...what more could you ask for?

Tranquil Getaway from hustle and bustle of Life

  • 5 of 5

My kids and I stayed at this lovely rustic home located above Santa Barbara City in a quiet wooded canyon. We really enjoyed the tranquility at the house and walking around the homes beautiful garden and grounds. The home was minutes away from our favorite spots in town so it turned out to be in a good location for us too. The Owners were always very responsive and willing to help us out in the event we had a question or issue. We had a great time there. Highly recommend it for those people trying to get away from the stresses of life.

Sunny home near the Botanic Gardens

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of four and found the home to be very spacious and accommodating. The master bedroom is upstairs with a large bathroom and walk-in closet, and the guest room is through the second bathroom on the first floor. The two floors are carpeted (the carpet was very clean), and very quiet at night. The kitchen is a full functioning one, also spacious, with a gas grill outside next to the koi pond (yup, big beautiful fish that kids, and adults, will enjoy feeding).

Dave, the owner, lives nearby and is easily available for any questions or concerns. He also regularly checked in with us (non obtrusively through texts or email) and even dropped off a map with an alternate route when road construction created traffic close to the house.

I grew up in Santa Barbara, and very much enjoyed our 6 days at this Mission Canyon rental!

Very relaxing location and a nice clean house.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at this place. We felt that we were in the middle of nowhere, but in fact were only minutes away from downtown Santa Barbara and 15 minutes to UCSB. The house is laid out nicely and has distinct areas that we spent different evening enjoying the outdoors and different sections of the house. There is a great koi pond that lends itself to the whole relaxing environment.

We were able to make it up to the botanical garden and Dave and Patti gave us a great history lesson of the area. They are an extremely interesting couple who shared their in-depth knowledge of the local area, both current and historical.

I would highly recommend this place and plan to stay here again if we ever get back to the area.

Amazing house, awesome hosts.

  • 5 of 5

What can I say? Well, I have never had such awesome hosts in all my travels with VRBO. Dave was always available before our trip to answer any questions and made sure he was at the house to greet us. You won't believe how beautiful the house and the grounds are. It's peaceful, beautiful, and you will feel welcomed and taken care of.

Complete privacy awaits you. On our last night, we invited Dave and Patti for a glass of wine to thank them for their hospitality. They are very interesting and you should definitely meet them to thank them for being such great hosts. Can't recommend this place enough. 5 stars for sure.

Owner's Response: Aw shucks Veronica. You and Adam were the awesome ones. Adam's skill in the kitchen is well known in North Carolina and your restaurant, the Sante in Matthews, I can guarantee, is five stars as well. Thank you for selecting us out of all the available houses in SB. It was our honor to meet, greet, and serve as your hosts for your short visit. Have a great winter and we hope to see you again next year.

Spacious, sunlit home in the trees

  • 5 of 5

First, let me say that the owner is very communicative and conscientious. Loved that! Very quiet area a short walk from the city's fabulous botanical garden - filled with indigenous plants and and trails, including a hiking trail. Large koi in a small pond welcome you each time you return to the house. The kitchen is the place you want to be at all times, well laid out, sunny and easy for the cook and the diners to interact. Comfortable and spacious - a great place to stay in Santa Barbara!
