About the property

1 bedroom cottage, ideal for a couple looking for tranquility in beautiful area

Le Crepon is a cosy country cottage ideal for a quiet and relaxing break in the heart of the Bocage Normand.

The cottage and pretty garden are south facing, with outstanding panoramic views over a beautiful valley. The nearest neighbours are several fields away and passing traffic consists of about one tractor and two cars per day. The owners house is in the grounds but not visible from the cottage and guests are welcome to use the garden.

Retaining it's authentic features, the ground floor has a typical french sejour with granite fireplace and woodburner, a bed settee, 2 comfortable rocking chairs, dining table and chairs and a well appointed kitchen area.

Also on the ground floor is the shower room with a large, efficient shower, toilet, sink and wall cupboard with mirror.

The stairs lead to the bedroom which has a very comfortable bed, bedside tables and lamps, chests of drawers, chair and hanging space.

There is a BarBQue and garden furniture on the garden terrace and ample private parking.

All linen, towels and welcome pack are included and up to 15% discount is available on Brittany Ferry crossings which land at Caen and Cherbourg (both just over an hour away).

The village is 2kms away and has bars, boulangerie, butchers, pharmacie, supermarket etc and there is a local, highly recommended gastronomic restaurant only 2kms away.

The cottage is in a perfect location for walking in the woods or countryside, or visiting nearby local markets, picturesque towns, historical sites and waterfalls.

Golf, fishing, swimming pools, bowling, zoos, beaches and theme parks are all within a short distance.

Cyclists need to be keen and ideally bring their own bikes as the area is very hilly, but there are bikes available to use.

Guests should find that there is just about anything and everything available for their perfectly relaxing holiday. The guest book has dozens of glowing reports and we have never had a complaint.

About Ann and Barry Burrell

I was brought up in Norfolk and Barry is Guildford born and bred. We spent most of our married life in Cranleigh, Surrey and have four adult daughters, (one of whom is physically and mentally disabled and lives in a semi independent living house with 2 others) and four grandchildren. Once the girls were grown up I joined Surrey Police and became a 'beat bobby' until the last years of my service when I became a recruit's trainer. 15 years later, at Christmas 2005, I retired and Barry was pleased to take early retirement too, from his job in a large dog and cat kennels, in Guildford, and we came to live here permanently.

We love to travel and spend most of the winter months independently travelling, particularly in South East Asia.

We have an old Hymer motor home and try to see more of Europe when we can.

Our family and friends regularly visit us here and we often go back to see them too. We love living here and really enjoy sharing our home with, and meeting, other people.

We have kept in touch with many of our guests and have visited some of them, in Berlin, Seattle, California, Denmark and Paris.

In 2014 we had five repeat bookings, one of which was the fifth booking for an English couple who have already booked again for this September.

Ann and Barry Burrell purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Ann and Barry Burrell chose Avranches area

Just before we bought Le Crepon in February 2002 I had an accident to my ankle which resulted in me being unable to walk for quite a while. We had friends who lived here and, as the house was wheelchair friendly, came to visit them for a bit of R&R. When we saw the cottage and it's wonderful location we fell in love with it and even though we hadn't planned to buy another house, we went home having paid the deposit and owned the cottage within 6 weeks.

We then came over so often that we decided to renovate the barn in the garden (which was originally a small house) and turn it into a larger house, so that we could live here permanently when I retired at Christmas 2005.

The garden was a wilderness and we have gradually turned it into something much prettier with a large vegetable and fruit plot.

We didn't want to change the feeling of living in a place that felt as though it was still in the 1950s, so it isn't modern Inside and has a very calming atmosphere.

The local people are very friendly and welcoming too, so we are very happy here.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has a wonderfully warm atmosphere inside it, so cosy and friendly, the original beams and fireplace, the granite walls and quirky stairs are all authentic . We didn't want to lose all this so there isn't a dishwasher, washing machine or piece of Ikea furniture in sight.

We were both brought up in the countryside and love the open sky and fresh air. There is no noise or light pollution here, so the stars are the brightest we have ever seen. We have a 180 degree panorama and can see across the beautiful valley to Avranches which is 25kms away.

The front of the cottage and the terrace seem to have their own micro climate as it always seems warm and out of any wind. Guests often sit out there until very late in the evening.

The main house is behind the cottage so cannot be seen, giving a feeling of total privacy.

The cottage is ideally suited for couples who are looking for a very peaceful relaxing holiday. It is cosy and full of character, (rather than being a purpose built gite with all mod cons and basic functional furnishings.) It can accomodate up to four people if necessary and previous disabled and elderly guests have slept on the very comfortable bed settee in the sejour, using the upstairs bedroom only for storage. The ground floor shower room being easily accessible. The stairs are small, winding cottage stairs and guests with mobility problems may find them difficult. There is an attached shed available for guests use for storage, with barBque, garden furniture etc Owners are on site but will ensure your privacy. This is a NO SMOKING cottage If guests would prefer to pay for end of stay cleaning, rather than clean the cottage on leaving, a rate can be agreed. There is a washing machine available on request for reasonable use.

Le Crepon was very well equipped with every need catered for. Excellent Wi-fi connection.Good shower room facilities. We only had a short stay but a perfect base for visiting the coast and surrounding attractions. Anne and Barry made us very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. I would recommend Le Crepon to all my family and friends

Peaceful and quiet with wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

The perfect retreat to get away from it all. The cottage is decorated with love and care by Ann and Barry in a quintessential french style. The cottage is well equiped with everything you might need and a few essentials are thoughtfully supplied. The bedroom is large and tastefully decorated. The shower hot and powerfull. The kitchen fully equiped. Although the owners are on site do not be put off by this as the cottage and garden are not overlooked by the owners, you feel you are alone in this lovely cottage. We were welcomed with scones, cake and a bottle of Normandy cider (thank you). Ann was realy helpful with her knowledge of the area and places to visit. Tha large garden which you are welcomed to use is a testament to Ann and Barrys hard work over the years they have been there. We have never holidayed at the same place twice but if we did this would be at top of the list.

tranquility in a lovely setting with helpful hosts

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful relaxing two weeks in Ann & Barry's lovely gite in a lovely rural location that is a great base for those seeking peace and quiet, yet within easy reach of beautiful beaches, interesting towns and tourist sites. The garden is a sun trap all day long, with a wonderful view of the valley and the western coastal area. The gite has everything needed and is very well kept. The small friendly village is a two minute drive away and large supermarkets about twenty minutes. Ann & Barry are extremely helpful & generous hosts who do not impose on their guests in any way. We highly recommend Le Crepon, Paddy and Philomena.

Delightful country cottage with all mod cons and perfect hosts

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our two week stay at Le Mesnil-Gilbert. The cottage is perfect for two though we did have an overnight guest on the bed settee. The cottage is well equipped with everything you need for self-catering, the bed is immensely comfortable, the linen and towels good quality and plentiful and the shower is excellent. The garden and view are beautiful and the terrace is a perfect suntrap. Bikes are available and there are many walks from the door. We appreciated the herbs and new potatoes fresh from the garden. This is a lovely base for a quiet holiday in the outdoors (though you may get an owl on the roof!). The coast and interesting places to visit are within easy drives. Wifi and Freeview an added bonus. I would recommend this property to family, friends and colleagues.

Owner's Response: Cycling here is mostly appreciated by those that have plenty of energy and are used to hilly terrain. Guests are welcome to share our fresh produce, when it is available.

Cosy and calm

  • 5 of 5

We spent two wonderful weeks here in August 2015. The appartment is beautifully arranged and equipped with everything one needs.

We received a very warm welcome by the hosts who provided us with fresh vegetables from their own garden as well as helpful recommendations for day trips. We were allowed to use their washing mashine, their bikes and even the Jacuzzi. We slept like babies and discovered the amazing landscape as well as the many historical sights in the area - it was perfect!
