Papa Bear's Den is a magnificent secluded mountain luxury log home that sleeps 16 and is ideal for large groups or families. Built as a private custom home, the exceptional craftsmanship is displayed throughout. Papa Bear's Den has 6,000 square feet of indoor living space. (No other listed 5 or 6 bedroom property has more than 4000 square feet). The home's interior was decorated by a team of professionals and boasts the highest quality lodge and chalet furnishings. A 12 foot realistic fir tree located in the dining area is also decorated for guests' enjoyment.

Perhaps the most unique feature of Papa Bear's Den is its location. Sitting on one acre adjacent to the border of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, the home offers breathtaking vistas from every angle. Spread across three levels, with three separate decks and a patio, panoramic views abound that capture the expansive grandeur of the Park. Guests can actually walk out the back door of the property into the biggest backyard in the Smokies, the 500,000 acres that comprise the most visited National Park in the United States. It is not uncommon to see a bear, deer, or wild turkey while visiting Papa Bear.

This one of a kind home sleeps 16 in spacious comfort. Papa Bear features 5 large full bathrooms and 5 huge bedrooms with additional sleeping in the Rec Room and Loft. The 5 oversize bedrooms (all approximately 14 ft by 18 ft) offer 3 queen and 2 king beds. Each bedroom is named to reflect the theme of its decor. Choose from Moccasin Magic, Dear Dreams, Bare Bottoms, Pollywog Pad, and Cozy Cove. Cozy Cove master suite with new memory foam mattress, French doors to the back deck, and Jacuzzi tub/separate shower in the master bath is indeed a special place.

The huge Fishin' Fever Rec Room (21 ft by 16 ft) provides a 6th designated sleeping area with bunk beds and murphy bed. Lookout Loft offers a daybed for yet another traveler to sleep.

All total, beds include 2 kings, 3 queens, 2 full, and 2 twins. Much time and attention was given to decorating each sleeping area. Expect to find new mattresses, the finest towels and linens, and all bedcovers designed by Donna Sharp. When settling in, select the bedroom theme that best suits your mood and taste. You will want to stay in each of them.

Papa Bear features five distinctive indoor areas to play, rest, and relax. The gorgeous glass encased Great Room on the main level offers majestic views from every angle. Solid log post and beam construction, soaring vaulted ceilings, and gleaming hardwood floors define the Great Room. A massive 20 ft floor to ceiling stacked stone gas fireplace creates the room's focal point. Plenty of seating allows family and friends to gather around the new 60” HD flat screen television.

The glassed in Sunroom is also located on the main level. The Sunroom’s more intimate setting offers a spectacular view of the Great Smoky Mountains. Lookout Loft is located on the home’s upper level. The Loft opens onto a balcony overlooking Roundtop Mountain and the mountain valley.

Those looking for entertainment will hightail it to the home's terrace level. There you will find both Fishin' Fever Rec Room and the separate Gathering Grounds Game Room.

Fishin' Fever Rec Room sports a fisherman theme with touches of Orvis and is anchored by a second massive stone fireplace. The Rec Room offers a full size pool table, foosball table, mini bar, and new large HD flat screen TV. French doors from the Rec Room open onto a 30 foot patio which meets the boundary of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Gathering Grounds Game Room is also located on the terrace level. It features a poker/bumper pool table as well as a new HD flat screen TV. Old timey games and posters displayed in the Game Room contribute to an atmosphere that invites both adults and children to come play. Select from a wide assortment of card and board games for you and your guests to enjoy. Yes indeed, the terrace level is where the "action" is!

Enjoy interactive cooking in the spacious sophisticated gourmet kitchen. The kitchen features a wall oven, microwave, separate convection oven, Subzero refrigerator, 10 foot bar with stools, and granite countertops. The kitchen is equipped with an abundance of pots, pans, cutlery, and numerous small appliances including a crockpot, hand mixer, blender, Mr. Coffee, Keurig, and toaster. Place settings of flatware, stemware, and stoneware for 24 are provided. There is a separate full sized laundry area with high capacity washer, dryer, and an extra refrigerator. The dining area, adjacent to the kitchen, boasts two new seven foot matching dining tables with seating for 16 people. The floor to ceiling windows in the dining area offer commanding views of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

The home is surrounded by 3 separate decks plus a patio totaling 1500 square feet of outdoor living space with unparalleled views of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Plenty of rockers and outdoor furniture allow guests to breathe the crisp mountain air, enjoy the abundant wildlife, and witness the beauty of the stunning sunsets, sunrises, and moonlit nights. A new gas grill and picnic table are located close to the kitchen on the back desk. Indulge in a new 6 person oversized hot tub that allows you out of this world views of the Smoky Mountains from every side. There is also an indoor Jacuzzi spa with windows on three sides that directly face the Smoky Mountains. Pool privileges are provided at no charge from May to October at Honeysuckle Meadows Pool located just 2 miles from Papa Bear's Den. Relax, relax, relax, and retreat from the world. That's what a real vacation is all about!

The paved driveway leads to a convenient parking area large enough for numerous vehicles. The home offers 2 main entrances. While one entrance has several steps another entrance has only 4 steps making access easy for elderly or handicapped guests, as well as loading and unloading cars.

This property's exceptional architectural features highlight the extensive use of wood, stone, glass, and granite throughout. These elements combine with the beauty of the setting to invite the natural world into this magnificent mountain getaway. Papa Bear's Den is located only 3 miles from Metcalf Bottoms, home of some of the best picnicking, rafting, and fishing in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The Pigeon Forge strip with The Island, Dixie Stampede, and Dollywood is less than 10 miles. Honeysuckle Meadows Pool and Catch and Release Pond is just two miles from Papa Bear's front door. Come see for yourself. You won't be disappointed!!

Why Rita Blair chose Tennessee

Our family has vacationed in the Smokies for three generations. Twice annually for a week at a time, plus frequent three day weekends we hit the trails for picnicking, fishing, hiking, local attractions, and “yes” even shopping. Finally my husband and I were presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase an acre of land that borders the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This land was previously unavailable for sale, so when it became available we jumped at the chance. Then came the process of building our dream home. After a lengthy design process, which incorporated ideas from family and friends, came the 13 month construction period. The “result” is a spectacular, yet inviting and relaxing log home nestled between the Appalachian Mountains and the spruce and fir forest that covers them. Here nature converges with both the indoor and outdoor living spaces to heighten our senses of the beauty that surrounds us. Our memories are many……happy times spent with family and friends observing holidays and celebrating birthdays, graduations and a myriad of other special occasions. Sunrises and sunset against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful places on earth are enduring. We have also enjoyed learning about the history of East Tennessee, the people and their customs. As the circle of life evolves, we find that we spend less time in our mountain paradise. However, we want to offer you, your family and friends the opportunity to create your own memories in our mountain retreat. We hope you will find time to soak in the peace and tranquility that this most special and wondrous place offers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful long weekend with 10 of our best friends. It's obvious this cabin was designed and decorated as a family home. It is one of the most beautiful places we've ever stayed and Rita was great to work with. The cabin was very clean and up-to-date. The kitchen and linens were stocked very well..there were even separate towels for the hot tub. The open floorplan allowed our party of 12 to gather in one area and socialize so easily. The labeling of the kitchen cabinets was such a nice touch but be ready for the light switches. They are labeled but not always where you would anticipate. It was somewhat of a scavenger hunt to find some of them but that added to the fun. We're keeping this one on our favorites list and hope to come back here soon.

The PERFECT Experience; The PERFECT view; The Perfect Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My brother and I decided our two families would meet in Pigeon Forge during our children's Spring Break this March. They were driving from Kansas, and had never had the opportunity to experience the Smoky Mountains or the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. My wife and children lived just four hours south of the area, and had visited a half a dozen times. We were excited to see them, and build many fond memories in this beautiful area. Using the HomeAway App (which I now swear by), I was able to locate this cabin. If you're reading this review, you've most likely seen the pictures already - they do well in capturing just how beautiful this cabin is...but words or pictures honestly don't do it justice. This is (by far) the most beautiful cabin we've ever stayed, and we've stayed in many. Hiking trails below, and three separate levels provided enough space for the nine of us to spread out, and the basement area was a nightly haven for us all to play pool, foosball, watch March Madness, and play the Xbox 360. There was even a secluded poker room. The kids usually stayed down there, while the adults would retreat to either the great room and fireplace, our bedrooms, or the hot tub that overlooks the Smoky Mountains. While we were there, we were bound to the cabin for two days due to significant snowfall. We had the best view in all of Tennessee from our cabin. As we sat in the hot-tub, or in the rocking chairs on the patio, we were able to see the snow cap the top of the mountains. Such a serene setting has rarely been captured. With our luck, we had done some grocery shopping the day before, and had plenty to eat. Speaking of eating, this cabin is stocked with everything you need to prepare and serve fantastic meals. Cupboards and drawers are all labeled, and the view from the kitchen pacifies any critic, as it opens up to a room filled with windows, again boasting a magnificent view of the smokies. We used the kitchen and external gas grill extensively, which cut down on a lot of costs associated with vacationing at a tourist location. The owner and site manager were, simply put, amazing. Even prior to our arrival, they were coordinating with us to ensure we missed the weather, and knew the best route to the cabin. The owner even asked for our input on how the cabin could be improved. She's an angel...and the cabin reflects her and her husband's love for one another...built as their home, we're all lucky enough to stay in it.

Awesome Family Gathering Place

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place for our entire family to gather and spend time visiting the park. We had 9 people in our group and a 9 month old infant. The cabin was everything we expected. It was clean, nicely appointed, and in a great location to access the park since it is located within about 2-3 miles outside of the park and actually the deck overlooks the park. All linens were provided and enough starting supplies in the kitchen to begin your vacation. Within a few miles are several small shops and restaurants and it is 20 minutes outside of Pigeon Forge and two large grocery stores.

The cabin is very nicely decorated and everything worked properly. We enjoyed playing pool, using the hot tub, spending time playing games in the game room and just enjoying the beautiful scenery from the rear deck and watching the sunset from the front porch and upstairs deck.

I would strongly recommend Papa Bears!

Your Search Ends Here

  • 5 of 5

Having vacationed in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area many times over the years, I've had the privilege of staying at several 5-star cabins. After staying at Papa Bear's Den, however, I believe my search is over for the best cabin in the entire area. In my opinion, this vacation rental is clearly a notch above others I've been to previously.

For starters, this place is spacious (humongous actually), very tastefully decorated, and furnished with some of the best furniture and appliances. It felt more like home and our group appreciated the layout and architecture of this place. One of the best attributes of Papa Bear's Den is that it's set on top of a ridge, mere feet from the GSM national park, which can be viewed from the back deck. From the front of the cabin, you can see the valley below. My favorite part was sitting on the back deck (or in the hot tub) and not being able to hear a car or a dog barking in the distance. Also, the cabin is conveniently located as it takes only about 15 minutes or so to reach Pigeon Forge.

Everyone in our group (all 16 of us of various ages) had a wonderful time and we have Rita to thank for the quick responses to some minor issues that arose, and a special thanks to Cheryl for opening up her beautiful home to us. This is a fantastic place and we hope to have the opportunity to return again sometime soon!
