Two large 5 bedroom holiday cottages on the farm, in the rural Heart of Devon
Situated close on the edge of the small hamlet of Poughill, in the heart of the tourist-free Mid-Devon countryside, the Barton is a small family run farm. Our land is grazed by a small herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle and a few sheep and chickens. Produce from the farm is usually available, including home reared beef and lamb, eggs, apple juice and cider from our orchards and seasonal fruit and vegetables.
We offer a choice of two spacious cottages, The Barton Granary and Brimbles, both converted from Grade II Listed barns, are comfortably furnished and well-equipped.
We are able to offer the added attraction of a small indoor heated swimming pool which is available all year round, together with a small enclosed children's play area.
In The Carriage House, we have a wellie bank (in case you forget yours and wish to explore the farm) outdoor and beach toys and games, a DVD library and selection of guide books and maps to borrow.
**Please note that regrettably we are unable to accept pets with the exception of assistance dogs**

Beautiful, well kept and very spacious
A lovely cottage break enjoyed at the Barton Granary. We had 6 adults and 2 children in our party for a long weekend. The views across Devon from the cottage are lovely, and the property itself is well kept and very spacious. The kids loved the swimming pool - all in all a cracking weekend away. Anne and Phil were great hosts also. Hope to return one day!
We are really happy that you and your family enjoyed your break at The Barton Granary and hope you come back again soon!
Beautiful Place to Stay
Just got home from a weeks holiday for 8 plus a 13 month old. The overall feeling from the group was how comfortable, well equipped and homely the Barton Granary was. Plenty of indoor and outside space to please all tastes and ages. The views over the surrounding countryside really added to the feeling of the property. Only criticisms were steps into the living room were scary with a toddler and could be highlighted on the information about the property and it was extremely cold with being such a large place which is understandable but having to ask to have the heating put on is a little much but there was a log fire so no problems! Thank god for the log fire!!!
Thanks for your kind review and I am glad you and your family found the Granary comfortable, well-equipped and homely.
I did offer stairgates for your baby, which I hope you used and also I did ask you to let me or Phil know at any time if you were cold so that we could put the heating on.
When you asked Phil for heating a couple of days after you arrived (when the weather turned chilly) he turned it on immediately.
I'm so very sorry you felt that it was a "bit much" to ask , but as I explained to you when you arrived, we have an environmentally friendly bio-mass boiler to supply our cottages that is controlled centrally. l did emphasise that you should tell us immediately if you needed the heating, day or night, and that it would be no trouble to put it on. I am sorry that you felt you could not do this. The weather in September can be extremely variable in the south west of England, so Phil and I are always ready to put on the heating for guests without any quibbling when asked as we too can feel the cold at this time of year. I hope this did not spoil your holiday.
A well presented and appointed property perfect for larger families.
The overall feeling from the group was how comfortable, well equipped and homely the Barton Granary was for our long weekend away, with enough indoors and outside space to please all tastes. The views over the surrounding countryside really added to the feeling of the property and we particularly enjoyed spending time in the outdoor areas provided.
Fantastic accommodation ( The Barton Granary )
If you want a place away from the Hustle and Bustle of normal town living this is the place for you. Peace and quite just the sound of birds and farm life, on a clear night the sky from here is really worth looking at we must have seen about four shooting stars one night. The accommodation was clean and with everything you need. The views are great you could see for miles from the kitchen window. If you have children they will love the chickens especially when they can feed them, during the day they roam around the farm so make sure the front door is shut, I even had them all following me around the farm. There was 8 adults and 2 children in our party and you would not have known it as the accommodation is large especially the kitchen and lounge. Anne and Phil are really helpful if needed and Anne's homemade Banana cake was yummy. The pool is great with changing rooms and the water is really warm. As it is remote to get there you do have to travel along single lanes for sometime, but hey it would not be Devon without these and your on holiday so no need to rush anywhere. We can recommend Fisherman's cottage restaurant Bickleigh which is right by the river, we had two meals here a carvery on the Sunday which you do not have to book but if you eat there at night time you will need to book. If we are down that way again we would definately book again. Thanks Anne & Phil
Perfect home away from home.
Perfect base venue for 3 couples all with babies and todlers. A large comfortable house with the added benefit of a connected indoor pool for those very wet days or lazy afternoons. Very clean and well equipped. Little play park for toddlers and chickens and sheep for them to see every day. We bought some of Phil's beef mince for a spag'bol one night and it was lovely and we were lucky enough to get a small create of some of the tastiest apples. Great hosts and would highly recommend!
Local pubs aren't walkable but the Ring of Bells in the next village is lovely with very good food (5 mins away by car)
Fantastic Property !!!!!!
Absolutely stunning property, spacious & well equipped.Stayed with all the family for a long weekend and it was perfect, beautiful surroundings within the farm and for lovely walks outside.Cannot say enough about how impressed I was with this place not to mention the swimming pool which was great.
The owners Ann & Phil Wander where delightful and even a freshly baked cake waiting on arrival....thank you very much !!
I would not hesitate recommending this property it was ideal for the ten of us and so much space not to be on top of each other,
Definatly will return .... A Star for me !!!
We're so glad that you enjoyed your short stay with us. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
The village of Poughill is a perfect base for exploring Devon. We are halfway between Exmoor and Dartmoor and halfway between the coasts. Many guests return year after year to enjoy the peace and quiet and dark night skies - perfect for meteor watching! The beautiful city of Exeter with its Cathedral, historic quay, huge selection of restaurants and excellent shopping is within easy reach and the local small town of Crediton (less than 15 minutes drive) has a high street of thriving independent shops, good delis, restaurants and cafes and an award winning Farmers Market on the first and third Saturday of most months. There's plenty of walking for all in Devon with treks on the moors, level easy walks perfect for children, along the Tiverton Canal or the Tarka Trail in North Devon, or the Exe Valley way in Exeter. There are also a couple of circular walks direct from the door. Golf (courses suitable for all levels), fishing and riding stables are all nearby and several National Trust properties (Knightshayes, Killerton and Castle Drogo are the closest) and numerous family attractions (including the Devon Railway Centre, Diggerland and The Big Sheep) are within easy reach. There are numerous pubs and restaurants within 30 minutes driving distance ranging from our rather good local pub in the neighbouring village of Cheriton Fitzpaine (The Ring of Bells) which serves excellent food and craft beers) to The Mason's Arms, a Michelin Starred restaurant and country pub owned and run by Mark Dodson, formerly Head Chef of the Waterside Inn in Bray.
