This Grade II listed former Granary, is at the top of the farm with views towards the village and across fields from the fenced garden and private terrace.
We have retained much of the original character of the building with the old horse engine, once used for moving grain, preserved as a striking feature in the sitting-room and we have preserved the original beams and stone walls throughout the property.
The huge sitting room features a wood burner, open beamed ceiling incorporating a whole elm tree, large glass doors to the terrace and garden and access to the first floor gallery area where you can find toys, games and books. There is a large, well-equipped kitchen/diner with access to the terrace. There is also a twin bedroom on the ground floor, together with a shower room. There is a useful utility room with washing machine and a separate WC. On the first floor there are 2 double and 2 twin bedrooms with many original features, and a second family bathroom.
Situated close on the edge of the small hamlet of Poughill, in the heart of the tourist-free Mid-Devon countryside, the Barton is a small family run farm. Our land is grazed by a small herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle and a few sheep and chickens. Produce from the farm is usually available, including home reared beef and lamb, eggs, apple juice and cider from our orchards and seasonal fruit and vegetables.
We offer a choice of two spacious cottages, The Barton Granary and Brimbles, both converted from Grade II Listed barns, are comfortably furnished and well-equipped.
We are able to offer the added attraction of a small indoor heated swimming pool which is available all year round, together with a small enclosed children's play area.
In The Carriage House, we have a wellie bank (in case you forget yours and wish to explore the farm) outdoor and beach toys and games, a DVD library and selection of guide books and maps to borrow.
**Please note that regrettably we are unable to accept pets with the exception of assistance dogs**
If you want a place away from the Hustle and Bustle of normal town living this is the place for you. Peace and quite just the sound of birds and farm life, on a clear night the sky from here is really worth looking at we must have seen about four shooting stars one night. The accommodation was clean and with everything you need. The views are great you could see for miles from the kitchen window. If you have children they will love the chickens especially when they can feed them, during the day they roam around the farm so make sure the front door is shut, I even had them all following me around the farm. There was 8 adults and 2 children in our party and you would not have known it as the accommodation is large especially the kitchen and lounge. Anne and Phil are really helpful if needed and Anne's homemade Banana cake was yummy. The pool is great with changing rooms and the water is really warm. As it is remote to get there you do have to travel along single lanes for sometime, but hey it would not be Devon without these and your on holiday so no need to rush anywhere. We can recommend Fisherman's cottage restaurant Bickleigh which is right by the river, we had two meals here a carvery on the Sunday which you do not have to book but if you eat there at night time you will need to book. If we are down that way again we would definately book again. Thanks Anne & Phil
Perfect base venue for 3 couples all with babies and todlers. A large comfortable house with the added benefit of a connected indoor pool for those very wet days or lazy afternoons. Very clean and well equipped. Little play park for toddlers and chickens and sheep for them to see every day. We bought some of Phil's beef mince for a spag'bol one night and it was lovely and we were lucky enough to get a small create of some of the tastiest apples. Great hosts and would highly recommend!
Local pubs aren't walkable but the Ring of Bells in the next village is lovely with very good food (5 mins away by car)
Absolutely stunning property, spacious & well equipped.Stayed with all the family for a long weekend and it was perfect, beautiful surroundings within the farm and for lovely walks outside.Cannot say enough about how impressed I was with this place not to mention the swimming pool which was great.
The owners Ann & Phil Wander where delightful and even a freshly baked cake waiting on arrival....thank you very much !!
I would not hesitate recommending this property it was ideal for the ten of us and so much space not to be on top of each other,
Definatly will return .... A Star for me !!!
My family arrived here from 3 areas of England and it was ideal to fit us all in for Christmas. We had a nicely decorated Xmas tree, beautiful mince pies and chocolate for the children waiting for us which was a lovely touch.
I was slightly concerned that we would not have enough pans, dishes, etc. to cope with a Christmas dinner but i need not have worried as there were loads of glasses, crockery, baking trays etc. - you name it, this house has it!! The kitchen has everything you will ever need.
The house was big enough for us all not to feel cramped especially with all the presents and food etc. - and drink!! The older children loved the pool whilst the little ones loved the animals, especially the chickens that roamed around the house.
We didn't venture out much apart from some shopping at Crediton and Tiverton but we did have a couple of nice meals at the newly opened Ring O'Bells in Cheriton Fitzpaine, which was recommended to us by Anne. This is a quaint old-fashioned country pub with lovely log fires and excellent food and owners.
All in all, a lovely traditional Christmas which we can heartily recommend to families who all want to be together at Christmas.
Recently me and my family (my partner, my sister, her partner, my other sister, her 3 children) stayed at the Barton granary and we had a wonderful time.
The house was very spacious - there was plenty of room for everyone and both the living room and kitchen were big enough that everyone could be in either room at once.
The children (in particular my sisters youngest who was nearly 2) loved he farm animals. The property is close to the chicken pen and the cow fields. Every morning he would ask to go and see the "chipims" a new word he learnt whilst on holiday. Unfortunately he didn't quite manage to correct himself to "chickens" before the end of our stay - but just another excuse to come back!
The swimming pool was a great entertainment for the children and they also enjoyed the crealy theme park which was not too far away.
The bedrooms and bathrooms were immaculate and the kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans etc...
The shopping in Exeter was also very good!
A lovely time had by all and great value for money. Would definitely return.
Thanks Anne and Phil for providing the venue for a great family holiday!
What a splendid find! We (me, husband and 4 year old) all totally relaxed and enjoyed our week long stay. We had a traditional week of English weather for June (cold, hot, sunny and rainy!) and we were able to find things to do whatever the weather.
The owners are very genuine and helpful. Our little boy enjoyed collecting eggs from the hen house. It was nice to see the animals on the farm (which is a spotless, clean farm with grass grazed animals - extremely well cared for) and this added to the relaxing atmosphere.
Everyone does something out of routine whilst on holiday, for us it was to have soft boiled eggs collected from the free range hens each morning and of course buttered soldiers. I recommend you try this. You will be hooked!
We stayed in the Granary - wow - what a splendid property this is. It is also equipped well above the norm. What is also nice is all the little extras which are included but not expected and these extras are quality products. I am now a convert and use the same products.
There is no scrimping here, it is clearly a work of love by the owners and their primary goal in this business is to make sure their guests are put first and are looked after.
Equally, the items you use (crockery, cooking pots and serving dishes etc) are so well thought out and nice to use. No green cups and saucers here that you often find in rental properties!
It is also very apparent that after each guest the whole bedding set is sent off for professional cleaning - the whole set, quilt the lot. Not just new covers put on. How do I know this? Well, the bedding was so comfortable and luxurious I had a sneaky look at a set put by in one of the spare bedrooms we were not using to see what the quilts were made of or where they came from so we could buy some and I spotted the cleaning tags!
What else struck me whilst there was other than the visitors book, there was no trace of previous guests - I think it is something of a skill to have a property that is booked out so much and yet maintain it to such a high standard that it doesn't show its busy use.
We were were not a large party and as such Anne and Philip offered a reduction on the rate for under occupancy. This they pointed out to us is on their website which I hadn't noticed when making the initial enquiry.
So the proof of the pudding is in the eating, would we pay a return visit - absolutely yes, any day of the week!
The village of Poughill is a perfect base for exploring Devon. We are halfway between Exmoor and Dartmoor and halfway between the coasts. Many guests return year after year to enjoy the peace and quiet and dark night skies - perfect for meteor watching!
The beautiful city of Exeter with its Cathedral, historic quay, huge selection of restaurants and excellent shopping is within easy reach and the local small town of Crediton (less than 15 minutes drive) has a high street of thriving independent shops, good delis, restaurants and cafes and an award winning Farmers Market on the first and third Saturday of most months.
There's plenty of walking for all in Devon with treks on the moors, level easy walks perfect for children, along the Tiverton Canal or the Tarka Trail in North Devon, or the Exe Valley way in Exeter. There are also a couple of circular walks direct from the door.
Golf (courses suitable for all levels), fishing and riding stables are all nearby and several National Trust properties (Knightshayes, Killerton and Castle Drogo are the closest) and numerous family attractions (including the Devon Railway Centre, Diggerland and The Big Sheep) are within easy reach.
There are numerous pubs and restaurants within 30 minutes driving distance ranging from our rather good local pub in the neighbouring village of Cheriton Fitzpaine (The Ring of Bells) which serves excellent food and craft beers) to The Mason's Arms, a Michelin Starred restaurant and country pub owned and run by Mark Dodson, formerly Head Chef of the Waterside Inn in Bray.
