Hen's Tooth Acres Farm is a treasure as rare as Hen's Teeth. We provide our guests with a genuine - and truly unique - small family farm experience. We are close to everything yet you'll feel like you've left the hustle and bustle of everyday life far-far behind you - giving you the best of both worlds. R&R when you want it or plenty of recreation, shopping, dining and assorted things to do when you don't.
Farm fresh free range eggs for breakfast, handcrafted goat's milk soaps (made with essentail oils) and come along at chore time if you'd like to share in caring for the farm animals. You may even want to try your hand at milking a goat or gathering fresh eggs. Perhaps you'd like to take a hike up the mountain. All of this and more...but you'll not find another vacation experience in the High Country that will even come close to the uniqueness of all that Hen's Tooth Acres Farm has to offer.
Hens Tooth Acres rental was exactly as advertised and even more. Farmer Fred was very welcoming and was very good with our granddaughter who he always asked her if she wanted to do chores. At first she was a little apprehensive, but after the first day she was always looking forward to the animals. She picked eggs, fed all the animals, held the baby goats, and I think she even milked the goat a little. It is a very beautiful farm in a very beautiful area. It is close to all the things to do in the area. Everything in the unit was well stocked and clean. We would return and would recommend it to all who enjoy the mountains and it's beauty. We will miss seeing Farmer Fred and so we will have to return soon. Thanks so much for a great week!!!
( The fresh eggs are worth the stay)
The place this review should begin is with Fred Townsend, aka "Farmer Fred". Farmer Fred is gentle and kind, and he really made us feel welcomed. He integrated my five-year old daughter into his activities so she could "work" on the farm gathering eggs and feeding the goats. She also enjoyed a four-wheeler ride with Farmer Fred. She just had an absolute ball at the farm.
Rachel and I built a stone dam in Farmer Fred's creek. Rachel really loved Farmer Fred's gentle dog, Max, an exuberant, young Pyrenees.
The apartment or rooms are great, the beds are comfy and the numerous pillows are varied so everyone can find one to meet their needs. The kitchen is well-equipped with pots, pans, a blender, a toaster -- any type of utensil you might need -- it's all there. There's even a Foosball table, washer and dryer, books to read, board games, and so on.
Farmer Fred shared some of his own cattle's steaks, and we had them for supper tonight back in Raleigh. They are tender and delicious, grass-fed, all natural! I ate Farmer Fred's chickens' eggs in the mornings, too! I also enjoyed the soaps that Farmer Fred's daughter-in-law, Abbie, made with milk from Farmer Fred's Nubian goats. And I had occasion to meet one of Farmer Fred's son's, Chris, and Chris and Abbie's two boys, Roan and Finnegan. I just cannot say enough about this family of kind, smart people who enjoyed teaching us about the farm and the surrounding area. My daughter loved playing with Chris and Abbie's boys, too.
Vilas, in which township Farmer Fred's farm is, sits so close to Valle Crucis and Boone.
We will definitely be back. It is so affordable, comfortable, fun and friendly. If you prefer privacy, I know Fred Townsend would respect that as well, and the apartment would certainly allow for it.
Thanks, Fred Townsend! See you soon.
What a wonderful stay again with Farmer Fred. This was our second stay in the last 2 months with Fred. The kids love him and love doing chores. Great time milking the goats, feeding the horses, and playing with Max. Fun times sledding down the hill and hiking in the woods as well! Highly reccomend a stay with Farmer Fred.
We just returned from our second trip to this lovely farm. Once again, we were met by the kind Farmer Fred who answered lots of questions and led us through farm chores. This place really is special and deserves it's 5 star review. It is very clean (and I'm very picky, for thing I do is check mattresses when we stay anywhere), and very comfortable. Our three kids love the toys, books, and foosball. All the little things you need in the kitchen are there, this time there was even a bed rail and toddler bed. Fantastic accommodations in a magical, idyllic setting. Planning our next trip back in my mind already.
We had such an amazing time! Farmer Fred is such a wonderful host. The accommodations included everything (& more) that we needed to make our stay comfortable. Our 3 year old had a great time collecting eggs & milking the goats. Our dogs enjoyed the fenced yard. My husband & I loved relaxing out in the chairs outside with a glass of wine & the peace of the mountains. We will certainly be back!
Though it rained and misted the entire three days my husband and I stayed at this lovely, quaint, and charming farm; we were thoroughly pleased. The apartment was clean and well stocked. Mr. Townsend was a gracious host and welcomed us with a gift basket of hand-made soap and farm fresh eggs upon our arrival. We loved the view from our front door - cows grazing, chickens feeding, and the horses were so beautiful. We will definitely stay again!
Year round activities make historic Valle Crucis an excellent vacation destination or simply a great place to get away.
