A perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty & peace of the NC mountains; great host & family.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here! Farmer Fred was a most welcoming host. We enjoyed meeting him & part of his family, as well as his family of animals. The chance to sit and watch the animals was wonderful. We interacted with some of them and it was a lot of fun. There are many restaurants & shops located within 30 mins to one hr, which was convenient. Its also not far from TN. We can't wait to go visit again!

Relaxing & Peaceful Stay

  • 5 of 5

Once again, our stay was wonderful. Farmer Fred welcomed us immediately and made us feel like we were at home. So thankful to have found this wonderful vacation spot. The farm-life opportunities that are offered are unbelieveable. I love that he allows you to actually interact with all of the animals and help with the chores around the farm. Looking forward to our next stay!!!

The most relaxing and peaceful week ever...

  • 5 of 5

We are on the road home and I couldn't wait to leave a review of our week at Hen's Tooth Acres! I don't even know where to begin. We typically plan our vacations down to what we will be doing each day. On this trip it was completely unnecessary! We didn't care if we had something planned or not. We did go to Linville Falls, Mast General Store and Tweetsie railroad but we mostly stayed in Valle Crucis and shopped, played at the community park which is beautiful, or simply relaxed at the farm. From the moment we met Farmer Fred we just felt safe and well taken care of. The apartment is under his own home but you would never know he is there. He is one of the hardest workers we have ever met and it truely shows on the farm. It's so beautiful and the animals just love him! Every night he was waiting with the basket so my oldest son could help with the "chores". He loved collecting the eggs, feeding Vader the horse, the goats, and petting and feeding Max the sweetest dog. My husband and I would either relax on the hammock or in the chairs outside when the boys napped and we even said this is the most we have talked in a long time due to being so busy at home. It was wonderful to have that quiet time together and just look out at the farm and be in peace. The apartment is nothing fancy but it immediately felt like home! The master had a king and the guest had a queen with a toddler bed in it. It is well equipped with supplies. The water was always hot for showers and we cooked many meals at home as well as tried a couple of new places. Pepper's is very good and was recommended by Farmer Fred. The goats milk soap is wonderful and I ended up coming home with 8 bars to give to family and to keep. We loved the farm fresh eggs and couldn't believe how much better they tasted. Farmer Fred always took the time to tell us all about the farm and how it worked and just have a conversation with us each night while our boys ran around and played. They couldn't wait to see him! I can't recommend this place enough and we have already talked about coming back next year! I think we have found our new favorite place to vacation and get away from busy everyday life.

Absolute Peace

  • 5 of 5

You can trust the reviews...everything they say about this place is true. Both of my kids (7 and almost 2) insisted on being back for chores each evening, and I agree that even if you never went anywhere except to grab some groceries, you would enjoy your stay. Fred told us about two trails on the property that we never got around to exploring, but we will next time.

We did enjoy our excursions to Mast General, the Linville Gorge and Caverns, some hiking near Grandfather, and canoeing on Price Lake. If you have kids, ask for the scavenger hunt brochure at Mast...it's a great way to keep them busy but have them check in frequently. We made breakfast each morning with our fresh eggs, and enjoyed "dinner" al fresco a couple of nights (simple things like bread, cheese, and fruit). Once the kids were in bed, my husband and I enjoyed sitting outside in the quiet and listening for the creek. I even saw a shooting star. We never turned on the TV, the Goat's Milk soap made perfect souvenirs, and we pretty much were all ready to just ask what the rent would be if we moved in. Despite being exhausted from birthing calves and goats, and normal daily farm work, Fred still spent time letting us "help" gather eggs and feed the animals. My kids LOVED all of the animals, and I can tell Fred has a special bond with them all, too.

The apartment was nothing fancy, but cozy, comfy, and clean and actually bigger in person than it looks in the pictures. It had everything we needed and then some. It was so nice not having to pack toys, linens, etc. and to be able to do a load of laundry while there. Oh, one piece of advice: if you are germ-averse or "city-fied", pack a set of clothes and shoes just for farm chores. You can just store them in the utility room each night and they'll be ready the next day, and you can keep your other clothes fresh.

I almost don't want to advertise this place, because I want to be able to rent it whenever we can, but it is a priceless family vacation for 10% of the price you would pay for a family of 4 to go to Disney! We had an unforgettable time, and as a mountain girl, I can't wait to return.

Such a peaceful and relaxing time

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at Hens Tooth Farm. Such a wonderful place to recharge and take it easy. We loved to do the chores and be with the animals. My daughter just loved the baby goats and Max the dog. I jokingly said to farmer Fred today I have to go back to civilization but later told him his civilization it's more civilized than mine. I guess the best compliment you can give is you wish you could stay longer and you want to return. That's how me and my family feel including my dog. The farm was a true mountaintop experience.

Thanks for the wonderful memories

A wonderful relaxing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing weekend at Hen's Tooth Farm. We headed to the mountains for a ski weekend and ended up finding an educational and peaceful stay at the farm. The farm is centrally located to Sugar, Beech and Appalachian, which we skied all three over the course of the long weekend. We were also able to help Farmer Fred do farm chores in the mornings and evenings. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the animals and sustainability and the kids just loved all the animals. Farmer Fred is the perfect host who is there if you need him, but is not intrusive. I would highly recommend Hen's Tooth!
