This private cottage is perfect for honeymooners, or anyone looking to escape the typical hotel scene. A complete home with lanai, kitchen, living and dining areas, full bath, and basic amenities will be your very own escape to paradise while still enjoying the accommodations necessary for any vacation. Not to mention your own private hot tub on the open lanai, a romantic scene for enjoying the pace and quiet and stargazing at night.
10/2015 We made several updates to the guesthouse including: sliding glass windows over kitchen sink, new bathroom tile, toilet, window screen, and paint in the bathroom, fixed a small roof leak, added a screen door on the front entrance, and put in a new electric cooktop. Our next project will be to repaint the living room!

This is a great location for spectacular views with hot tub and wonderful privacy in a traditional Hawaii cottage. And getting there is half the fun. Amenities are basic but quite adequate. My wife and I spent a week here in early January 2017 and loved every minute, many of which were spent in the hot tub day and night. Weather can be cool (mid 60s) in the am until sun comes above trees but warms quickly to upper 70s and low 80s by mid morning. Be prepared to hear distant farms animals from farm in valley below (rooster, cows) which is fairly common in many areas of Capt Cook and Hononau. Nearby super market and small restaurants within 2 miles of Ohia Hale makes for easy shopping and average food quality dining. We did eat at Loko Wraps twice so that gets on the list. Ohia Hale is best for couples without kids looking for privacy.
As a second time around, we were not surprised, we knew what to expect. In brief you rent this house for the incredible views from the lanai, quiet setting away from the hustle but close to the best snorkelling. It is not luxurious and you should not expect above what is promised. Pictures represent well what you get. The house is clean as much as it can be in a tropical setting. Communication with the owner is swift and straightforward.
I would recommend the property for the above reasons.
Few recommendations- it will be nice to have some updates to cutlery, utensils, shower curtain and mattress.
Very cute cottage with great ocean and sunset views. Hot tub on the deck with a nice sitting area. It was the perfect "home base" spot for us during our stay on the big island.
We had a really relaxing week at Ohia Hale and would recommend it to people who want a comfortable stay outside of the resort scene and Kona bustle. The house is perched on a cliff overlooking Kealakekua Bay and we really enjoyed sunsets and the hot tub on the deck. The house was clean and with all the amenities we needed such as washing machine and drier, kitchen etc. It was also a good location for great snorkelling and a trip to Mauna Kea with a good shopping centre and markets nearby for the grocery shop. Kyla was extremely helpful with all our queries and everything went smoothly.
This beautiful location provides a gorgeous view of the Kona coastline. The solid built deck allowed for lots of time to ponder the beauty, enjoy tropical fruits and local coffee at the outdoor table and just breathe. We had a couple of rainy afternoons and it was very peaceful to enjoy them there. The hot tub was great in the rain. This is not the place for someone who is more comfortable in a hotel experience and might be put off by an occasional bug and constant geckos. During our visit, September, there was frog sounds through the night. They were very loud but they didn't disturb us, just took some getting used to. It was a little disappointing that to take a walk from here was mostly uphill but that's why the view is so great. At night, it is extremely dark and we liked that. We enjoyed the Sunday farmer's market nearby. It is a good location to travel out to other sites also but be aware of the "commute traffic" in the morning, north to the tourist area. We chose the location because it is close to a great snorkeling area. It was all we expected and we had a very wonderful visit. Wishing I was there now, hope to return before too long.
My husband never wanted to go to Hawaii because it was too touristy. On that note, I chose the big island and staying at the Ohio Hale was the best decision I made. He loved being away from it all yet close enough to all the conveniences. We loved exploring the island and saw the majority of it in the 8 days we were there. We get tired driving and booked a hotel in hilo for 1 night, I recommend two to see everything, its a great way to drive around the whole island. Kyla was extremely helpful in answering all my questions and her mom joined us for a glass of wine one evening. There is a great fish and chips place not far from where we stayed that was delicious, featuring their local fish ono. My favorite part of the trip was relaxing on the deck morning and evening and soaking in the hot tub with the beautiful view. I cant wait to come back. My thanks to the Livingston family.
Located in the heart of Captain Cook, this quaint, private home offers the best of South Kona and easy access to Kailua-Kona. Offering a great view a short drive to both Kealakekua Bay and The Place of Refuge there is plenty of cultural, historic sites to see. Only an hour and a half drive from Volcanos National Park and two hours from Hilo.
For your fresh food needs, a grocery store is located just up the road, and there are several great farmers markets for you to enjoy fresh organic fruits and vegetables.
