Beech Mountain House Rental Photos and Description

4BR/2BA (2kitchens,2 living rooms,2 decks)

Double eating, living, and play space (2 Living Rooms, 2 Kitchens, 2 Decks) make this a perfect home for 2 small families or 1 large family with teenagers. (Please contact me if you are interested in renting only 1 floor of the home - anytime except holidays and weekends during peak season). This house is decorated with motivating photos of skiers, boarders, and climbers and has 13 ceiling-to-floor windows and 2 large decks. This creates a feeling of being in the middle of a large playground...which you are.

This quiet home, high in the trees, is less than 2 miles from Beech Mountain ski slopes, the golf course and clubhouse, tennis courts, heated Olympic swimming pool, fitness center, and recreation center with kids programs. There are also nearby hiking and biking trails.

If you prefer a more relaxing vacation at the home, the upstairs has a living room with fireplace and TV/DVD player with a selection of DVD's, board games and wi-fi internet service. The dining room has seating for 6 guests and the kitchen is well-equiped with cookware and dining ware. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and glass door entrance to the deck. There is also a twin bedroom upstairs. The upstairs deck has a charcoal grill and casual seating for 6. This deck has a gate at the stairs to keep a dog or small kids out of trouble and there is a dog house at the back of the wrap-around.

The upstairs and downstairs share an entrance from outside and a mudroom, but each have a private, secure entrance off the mudroom. The downstairs has a living room with fireplace, futon, TV/DVD player, and a selection of DVDs and board games as well. The kitchenette has a small refrigerator, two-burner stove, micro-wave, and full range of cooking and dining ware. The kitchen table seats 4. Also downstairs are a bedroom with a queen bed, a bedroom with twin beds, and a bathroom. The downstairs deck has a large swing on it.

This home is one of the original built on Beech Mountain - with a classic octagonal shape and high tongue-in-groove ceilings supported by large beams. It has been remodeled - with new windows, new paint, a new heat/air conditioning/dehumidification system, new appliances, new granite counter tops, and a new hardwood floor upstairs. It feels light and airy. It is well-furnished, and relaxing. Moreover, we have updated it with modern conveniences - we have wi-fi, a network extender which enables you to have cell service where you otherwise would not have service, and two new TVs -one a smart TV, and the other with a Roku box, which enable you to get Netflicks, Hulu and other movie providers.

Beech Mountain, at 5.506', is the highest ski resort in Eastern America - with the highest temperatures in the 70's, it is a great escape from summer heat too. In winter, there skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and ice skating - all within 2 miles of our home. In summer, our Beech Mountain Club membership allows our guests access to swimming, tennis, golf, and the fitness and recreation centers and programs - again, all within 2 miles of our house.

We have enjoyed growing up in this home and hope that you will find it a great base for your adventures on Beech Mountain

About kitty calhoun

Growing up, I worked on ski patrol at Beech Mountain during the winter and at the tennis courts and recreation center during the summer. I went to the NC Outward Bound School, took up whitewater kayaking and climbing, and became a mountain guide for the American Alpine Institute. I still have many friends and connections on Beech Mountain and in the area - who are a great resource.

kitty calhoun purchased this house in 1973

Why kitty calhoun chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

My parents chose to build on Beech Mountain because it offered the best skiing in the South. Ski Beech is still the best and over the years, has developed as an exceptional vacation resort for the spring, summer, and fall seasons as well.

What makes this house unique

This home is a particularly inspiring place to stay for 3 reasons: 1) I have lined up discounts with local outfitters, guides, and shops for my guests 2) the home is decorated with professional photos of people engaged in outdoor activities 3)it sits high up in the trees so from the second floor deck, it feels like you are up in a tree house - fun!

A beautiful "tree house" in Beech Mountain!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this house that all called the "Tree House" for a family wedding in August at the top of Beech Mountain. The home was clean and comfortable for 8 adults! Everything that we needed was available to us and we were close to the ski lift, if you are a winter visitor! The summer breezes through the trees kept us cool with little need to use the air conditioner and the deer and fox sightings kept us entertained.

We will visit again!

Versatile cabin in the trees

  • 4 of 5

I stayed in this cabin for four nights during the summer. We had two families in our group. The cabin accommodated everyone nicely. Overall, it was a positive experience for all. The best part of the cabin is that it is somewhat "divided" between the two floors, allowing two families to have some private time when desired. The upstairs kitchen is really the only kitchen. Two reasons why I did not give it five stars: (1) the cabin is much darker/dimmer than I expected, especially on the bottom floor; (2) the furniture and drapery are aged and should be replaced. Again, nothing really wrong with the cabin. It just shows its age. For the price, it is a good value.

Beautiful and Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We stay for a total of 4 days 3 nights, and it was incredible, the house was clean, and nice with a nice outside view. Beech mountain was an amazing place, and so was the house. Most definitely coming back.

This home is a good home and the cost is well priced for a large family

  • 3 of 5

In general the home was very good for our family. The price was right.

A few things to be aware of though is that the walls are very thin, the laundry is in the separate basement so you have to go outside to get to the basement not downstairs. The garbage can in the kitchen has no cover so will start to smell if you don't empty twice a day, and we had to do a bit of cleaning upon arrival, not to much. The sliding glass doors are very heavy to open, some of the pots and pans were very old as well.

With that said for what we paid and got it was well worth the 12 days, and the general set up of the house is excellent for the children and the adults having "separate" apartments, and the owner was very helpful when we had a few problems we needed help with.

I would choose to spend more the next time to get a different set up.

The outdoor deck area is a perfect place to sit and read with a cup of coffee in the morning. The house has everything you need for a stay in the mountains.

Overall good but could be improved

  • 3 of 5

The house is well equipped and having two separate living areas is definitely works well for large groups of different ages. We also appreciated being able to bring our dogs. Overall, the house seemed clean but would benefit from additional updating. The carpets in the bedrooms were stained, and my son said he could feel the springs on his bed which made it difficult to sleep. The chairs in the upstairs living room were really uncomfortable. It would have been nice if there were cushions for the deck furniture. The metal chairs were hard to sit in for very long so we couldn't really enjoy the outdoor space despite the amazing weather. There was a slight musty smell which would probably be better if the carpets were replaced. Finally, there didn't seem to be a way to secure the sliding door on the bottom floor. It wasn't locked when we arrived, and we couldn't lock it nor could we find a board to fit in the track to keep it secured. Anyway, I realize it's a rental and things will get worn, but the house would be greatly improved with a few more updates and improvements. Highly recommend Grandfather Mountain!

Owner's Response: I am glad you thought our house was good overall. We are constantly making improvements - and take your comments seriously. We were aware of some of the needed improvements already. We plan to replace the carpet upstairs in the fall. The box springs and mattresses on the single beds are old and will all be replaced by fall. The upstairs sliding door lock has been repaired. The downstairs door will be replaced next summer. The chairs are being refinished and should all have new cushioning by fall. Cushioning for outdoor furniture is a problem because of frequent thunderstorms and the unlikely hood of cushioning being brought indoors in a timely manner.
