This home is one of the original built on Beech Mountain - with a classic octagonal shape and high tongue-in-groove ceilings supported by large beams. It has been remodeled - with new windows, new paint, a new heat/air conditioning/dehumidification system, new mattresses and box springs on all beds, new appliances, new granite counter tops, and a new hardwood floor and carpeting upstairs. It feels light and airy. It is well-furnished, and relaxing. Moreover, we have updated it with modern conveniences - we have wi-fi, a network extender which enables you to have cell service where you otherwise would not have service, and two new TVs -one a smart TV, and the other with a Roku box, which enable you to get Netflicks, Hulu and other movie providers.
Beech Mountain, at 5.506', is the highest ski resort in Eastern America - with the highest temperatures in the 70's, it is a great escape from summer heat too. In winter, there skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and ice skating - all within 2 miles of our home. In summer, our Beech Mountain Club membership allows our guests access to swimming, tennis, golf, and the fitness and recreation centers and programs - again, all within 2 miles of our house.
We have enjoyed growing up in this home and hope that you will find it a great base for your adventures on Beech Mountain

About kitty calhoun
Growing up, I worked on ski patrol at Beech Mountain during the winter and at the tennis courts and recreation center during the summer. I went to the NC Outward Bound School, took up whitewater kayaking and climbing, and became a mountain guide for the American Alpine Institute. I still have many friends and connections on Beech Mountain and in the area - who are a great resource.
kitty calhoun purchased this House in 1973
Why kitty calhoun chose Beech Mountain
My parents chose to build on Beech Mountain because it offered the best skiing in the South. Ski Beech is still the best and over the years, has developed as an exceptional vacation resort for the spring, summer, and fall seasons as well.
What makes this House unique
This home is a particularly inspiring place to stay for 3 reasons: 1) I have lined up discounts with local outfitters, guides, and shops for my guests 2) the home is decorated with professional photos of people engaged in outdoor activities 3)it sits high up in the trees so from the second floor deck, it feels like you are up in a tree house - fun!

Great getaway for two families
The house was very well appointed with all that you could need. The proximity to Beech and Sugar means that this one is marked in our favorites. Kitty communicated very well and was an excellent host.
Perfect place for Beech Mountain vacation
We had 2 families so the layout of the house worked great for us. Each family had their own space, but it was very easy for everyone to hang out together as well. Not really 2 kitchens as "kitchen" on first floor is only a sink and a mini fridge. Kitchen on 2nd floor had everything we needed though. Bedrooms were roomy enough and beds were comfortable. Place was clean and cozy. Would stay here again if we return to Beech.
Perfect mountain cabin
Great location! Easy access to all the mountain offers. Clean and comfortable living space!
Very nice, cozy, and secluded!
Great trails, with waterfalls nearby. Nice, cozy home away from home! Love the decks! Very nice!!!
Comfortable and spacious
We had a very good stay in this comfortable, large home. Because we had a large group, we especially appreciated the large upstairs living room, which opens onto a large deck, and the kids enjoyed playing games and catching up with cousins. There is a large screen TV on each level, but we never even turned them on--so much else to do and enjoy. Beds are very comfortable, and the use of a washing machine and dryer on the bottom level was very helpful for a week long stay, especially when kids returned from a hike soaking wet from falling in a stream. The pool table was a big hit.
Kitchen-the stove was quite new, and cooking supplies were plentiful for cooking for so many people. Turbo-boil setting heated up a very large pan of water very fast. We easily cooked 2 pounds of pasta and mashed potatoes and ground beef for 10 with the available pans. There are helpful extras like cheese grater, crock pot, casserole dishes, etc.
Location--beautiful! It really was super to be high up in the trees and see and hear birds at eye-level, and deer from above. You definitely need to be comfortable managing lots of steps if you stay here. We loved the views from the bedrooms, and enjoyed being able to go out to the deck from the master bedroom upstairs. The porch swing also got a lot of use. We've learned when staying in Beech Mountain to make a stop for groceries at the Food Lion in Banner Elk before heading to our vacation home, because it is a hike back into town. Fred's does have basic supplies on the mountain, but it took us ~20 minutes to go to Banner Elk, so plan accordingly.
Because we had such a large family group in town, we didn't do our usual pay-per-person activities (e.g. ski-lift ride and disc golf down Beech). There was plenty of free hiking--Fireman's Park was in walking distance, with a fun trail off of it, and the kids also loved hiking on trails at the top of Beech at Emerald Outback. My husband and I were in a slower mood, and sat quietly under the powerlines, which weren't so pretty, but still enjoyed a great view, especially when we got to see indigo buntings flying back and forth.
Signal is always very spotty for us in Banner Elk/Beech, so set your phone to wireless calling for reliable, clear calls when you're in the house. Wifi was excellent. When the power blinked out, wi-fi came right back on without any problem.
The only problem we encountered was handled quickly and thoroughly. We loved our stay and would happily return.
We are so thrilled that you enjoyed our house and vacation time on Beech Mountain as much as we have with our families.
Quiet and relaxing. Had a great time with two families at this property.
Good location to get away from everything. Great hiking trails all around the area. Close to Boone and Blowing Rock. Internet is sketchy if you need it. Weather was great and we LOVED the upstairs patio.
We are glad you enjoyed the house! We will check on the internet right away.
Beech Mountain offers many recreational opportunities and activities without ever having to drive off the mountain. However, if you are adventurous, there are also an abundance of recreational opportunities such as rafting, caving, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing - within a 45 minute drive of our home. Never tried it or don't have your gear? There are several outfitters, guides, and equipment shops nearby to help. These are all listed in our extensive Welcome Book, with discount coupons to select outfitters and shops. Relax and enjoy exploring Beech Mountain and the surrounding High Country!
