About kitty calhoun
Growing up, I worked on ski patrol at Beech Mountain during the winter and at the tennis courts and recreation center during the summer. I went to the NC Outward Bound School, took up whitewater kayaking and climbing, and became a mountain guide for the American Alpine Institute. I still have many friends and connections on Beech Mountain and in the area - who are a great resource.
kitty calhoun purchased this House in 1973
Why kitty calhoun chose Beech Mountain
My parents chose to build on Beech Mountain because it offered the best skiing in the South. Ski Beech is still the best and over the years, has developed as an exceptional vacation resort for the spring, summer, and fall seasons as well.
What makes this House unique
This home is a particularly inspiring place to stay for 3 reasons: 1) I have lined up discounts with local outfitters, guides, and shops for my guests 2) the home is decorated with professional photos of people engaged in outdoor activities 3)it sits high up in the trees so from the second floor deck, it feels like you are up in a tree house - fun!

Great location and The house had everything we needed.
The Perfect Vacation Property
We loved the location of this home, the feeling of living in the wilderness (Seeing deer in the yard) only a mile and a quarter from the ski slopes. The two floors with separate kitchens and observation decks was like having two villas. The two fireplaces created a cozy atmosphere to relax in after skiing. We certainly enjoyed our vacation and will be back next year.
Jeff and Christy
The only complaint was there was some dirt/stain on bed sheets under the blankets. Overall, it was nice property and great location for skiers.
Convenient and functional, if a bit dated
This home is in a great location, less than 10 minutes to Beech Mountain resort and skiing. It was on the dated side and dusty, but the layout was great for our family with two separate fully independent floors connected by a spiral staircase. We had issues staying connected to WiFi, which was tricky for our teens. But the host was very responsive and friendly and the beds were comfy and well appointed.
House is different of the photos
There is information about two kitchens, but there is only one upper house that has fridge and stove, and in the lower house there is a small sink and a fridge. No site has 2 photos of black and white kitchen, indicating an error. The fridge was dirty with the rest of the food.
I had no cell phone signal and Wi-Fi was not working.
The room was dirty, cobweb on the walls and dirty pillowcase. I took my bedding.
The carpet in the tv room was totally dirty. The air conditioner urgently needs maintenance because it smells bad. The filter must be dirty.
You cannot bathe and use a faucet or other shower at this time because there is not enough hot water. The price is not worth the stay.
Unfortunately there was a communications barrier that colored this guests' stay. It started when I sent directions, lock box code, and arrival info to an email address that I was provided with, but that was never read - because I received a phone call asking for the address and lock box code. To use ATT, your phone number must be previously registered to be recognized by the booster - which is also in the initial email. The internet password was in the House Instructions, which are in the Welcome Book, which was not read - because I received a phone call asking for the password. The house description on the website was not read because it says that downstairs there is a small fridge, a two burner stove, and microwave - which there are. Additionally, the housekeeper came to check on the guests and was told that everything was fine. If there were issues with cleanliness, that would have been an opportune time to let us know.
Beech Mountain offers many recreational opportunities and activities without ever having to drive off the mountain. However, if you are adventurous, there are also an abundance of recreational opportunities such as rafting, caving, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing - within a 45 minute drive of our home. Never tried it or don't have your gear? There are several outfitters, guides, and equipment shops nearby to help. These are all listed in our extensive Welcome Book, with discount coupons to select outfitters and shops. Relax and enjoy exploring Beech Mountain and the surrounding High Country!
