|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
The Knotty Pony is located directly on the Joshua Tree National Park border. She's an easy 4 miles from the downtown eateries. Hiking explorations of the park start at the end of the driveway, with trails into spectacular, secluded ravines. Other nearby attractions include the 49 Palms Oasis and Indian Cove (a favorite spot for rock climbers).
Built in the seventies and nestled in a grove of mature trees, the Knotty Pony is a big friendly chalet of a house with an open floor plan, original 18' beamed ceilings and tons of warm wood. Our suspicion is that she started life as a back-in-the-day kit house that one might have found plans for in Sunset Magazine. We selected restored vintage modern furniture pieces, craft items, and art to express our appreciation for handmade objects, and left as many of the original rustic features in place as comfort and taste would allow. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms accommodate up to six peeps. The master bedroom/bath suite has a king bed and tons of closet space, plus tub and shower in the bathroom. One of the two upstairs bedrooms has a queen bed, and the other has a daybed (the daybed can also be configured into two twins or one queen). The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom which also has a tub and shower. There's also a large sofa/daybed in the TV lounge. There's plenty of seating under the porch overhang for gazing down at the long views to the north, or for looking up at the dark night skies, and coal barbecues and a fire barrel for roasting some eats.
Experience pristine hikes and park scenery without ever getting in the car...simply step outside the door and walk the 50 or so paces that will take you onto the critter trails that crisscross the nearby parkland. Inside Knotty Pony, Fujitsu mini-splits quietly and cleanly heat and cool each zone of the house for comfort regardless of season. Basic cable TV and Netflix are provided in the mezzanine hang-out lounge, and the acoustics in this wood house are so perfect that we just had to install a turntable backed up with an eclectic sampling of vinyl. The six person jacuzzi is in the sheltered side yard and is professionally maintained between guests. Books, board games, cookbooks, an assortment of basic spices, and good cookware and appliances (Jen Air oven, a dishwasher, electric 5 burner stove) speak to a range of interests. The 9' dining table is a great place to spread out and work on a project or to enjoy a communal meal.
Because it's such a roomy property, it might be tempting to invite the gang out for a bash. Though we love attending a lively party, please refrain from having one here as we need to keep the property in A+ condition for guests seeking quality space and quiet enjoyment. Likewise, special arrangements are required for filming and photo shoots. So sorry, but we no longer allow pets.
Knotty Pony makes a great weekend retreat, but please inquire about longer stays as we happily slide the scale as the number of nights, weeks, or months increase! Over half of Knotty Pony visitors are return guests, with multiple return stays of up to four months. We encourage long stays, with weekly rates at 1,600. and the monthly rate at 3,250. (or about 108. dollars per night) for one month and 2,950. per month for multiple months. Nightly stays are 325. per night. Please click on the "rates" tab below the photos for accurate pricing, as the VRBO "average pricing" feature in the headline can be misleading! They combine all of the rates from nightly to monthly, and deduce an average. This is not an optional feature, so I apologize for any misdirects that this formatting may have caused.
As a set designer, I'm in love with the visual drama of the California high desert. I was so excited when I found my little spot in the Mojave....I couldn't wait to start working with the palette of homestead architecture, native plants, seasons, and vistas that Joshua Tree offers. My hope is that the resulting home reflects the unassuming laid-back lifestyle that I value but sometimes find difficult to enjoy in LA, while also reflecting a respect for nature, warmth, a bit of humor, and relaxation with the necessary flourishes (good art, good books, wi-fi and music!).
Miriam purchased this house in 2010
When I stumbled on The Knotty Pony as a rambling diamond in the rough with her 2000 sq. ft of untouched original woodwork, FABULOUS park-adjacent location with big views and mature trees, there were only two things that I could do…take down the realtor sign and pick up my hammer!
Being in a house on the border of a wilderness area is a powerful reminder of many things. I love this house for helping me to remember how many stars there are in a night dark sky, what the sound of quiet feels like, and how to gauge the passing of hours by the movement of light and color across a rock mountain outside the window.
The Knotty Pony has everything you could want or need!!!! This beautiful extremely well maintained property is so lovely you don't want want to leave even tho Joushua Tree National Park IS the backyard- And Main Street is 5 mins away

We do enjoy Poppy and Harriots where children are welcome to listen to live music and enjoy huge meal, there is a ghost town to roam around as well
The Knotty Pony is the perfect place to relax restore and make everlasting memories
Thank YOU Miraim for creating this heaven for ALL to enjoy!!!
I have found that being at the Knotty Pony takes some discipline on why you are there. You could be there for the Music Festival, some hiking in the close by Joshua Tree, or visiting the local town. It is a short drive away from Pioneer Town or even Pappy and Harriet’s. Whatever you are doing you will need the strength to leave to go do what you had originally planned to do. It is a magical place that has its own life. You open the windows and doors and sit on the front patio with a selection from the record collection turning softly in the background watching nature in front of you with a cozy comfortable feeling. An eclectic taste of design will treat you inside and out as you discover the design and decoration of a very well built and maintained house in a secluded peaceful area. The well-stocked and furnished kitchen welcomes you to create a meal or there is the barbeque in the front for a night time feast under the stars with the Jacuzzi to take you down the final bit of relaxation and you know the comfort of a great sleep awaits you in the quite with cozy beds. I can’t say enough I am quite spell bound by this place and look forward to my stay almost more than the events I am there for. She has her own personal touches that make it magic.
The house was perfect for two families of four with school aged kids. Two kids were able to sleep in the loft with air mattresses. The house and grounds were extremely well maintained. A special treat was the massive collection of old albums from the 60s-80s and a working turnstile to play them on! Each night was a treasure hunt to find our evening's soundtrack! Highly recommend this home.
Quite possibly one of the hippest places I've ever had the pleasure of staying at. Its so wonderfully secluded and so beautifully decorated the pictures barely do it justice. Miriam is a one of a kind women who made our stay a memory we will cherish forever.
The Knotty Pony, under Miriam's flawless supervision, is everything you could ever want in a desert getaway. The chalet is spacious yet cozy, beautifully staged with fantastic furniture and artwork, and filled with many places to sit and relax. The grounds are immaculate, diverse, and home to roadrunners, quail, birds, and more. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook a great meal with. The outdoor grill is perfect, the hot tub is kept in A+ condition, and the proximity to the park simply can't be beat. Clean linens, a phenomenal vinyl collection, a fireplace, books, movies, bountiful outdoor seating, utterly quiet surroundings, and more make this the perfect getaway destination in Joshua Tree. We had the most amazing time staying there and we know we'll be back again one day. After all, why would we go anywhere else when there's the Knotty Pony?
I can't even begin to describe how terrific this property and its owner, Miriam, are. I almost don't want to share it with anyone else!
From inquiring about the property to packing our bags on the last day, Miriam went above and beyond to get back to me quickly, offer advice on hikes in the area, and more! Countless times sent me detailed directions of hikes and things to do. She was extremely flexible on check in and check out times, and generally just a rock star property owner.
As for the house, all I can say is WOW. The place is even better than in the photos, which look pretty great already. When we arrived, it was in perfect condition, the hot tub was already hot, and the entire driveway was raked. The attention to detail with the decor was outstanding, with fun things to see at every turn. It really felt like someone's home that they care for as their own, rather than a hotel- like rental. Solar-powered lights come on at night and light up the whole outdoor space. It's right on the park border, and we took a beautiful, wildflower-filled hike right outside the front door. Kick back in one of the many seating areas, light up the BBQ and toast some s'mores on the fire pit, and watch the purple sunset on the mountains!
I will definitely be back here every time I go to Joshua Tree, I really can't recommend the Knotty Pony and Miriam more highly. By far and away the best rental experience I've had in any city.
Knotty Pony Chalet abuts the northern boundary of Joshua Tree National Park. A secluded, marked trailhead just across the dirt road access takes hikers into spectacular ravines, with easy, scenic hiking options along the way for those inclined toward leisure. Boulder scramble a stone's throw from the front door. Some years we have seen bighorn sheep on the mountain just to the south. The covered porch looks out to long valley views. Downtown Joshua Tree is about 4 miles away.
