About Diane M. Daly

I have always had a deep love for nature which my Father had instilled in me since I was a child. I was committed all my life to working hard and making enough money to be able to retire in the Adirondack Mountains that I love so much. I am a graduate of Paul Smiths College, specializing in Culinary arts and Hospitality management. My Father sent me to Paul Smith's to learn about the industry and take over our family business that he had purchased in 1960.

I had to work very hard and prove myself to him before he would gift the property to me. I worked in the appraisal field for approximately 30 years and had a very successful Real Estate Appraisal Firm with 2 offices in Delray Beach and Palm Beach Florida , specializing in multimillion dollar properties. I enjoyed my work, met a lot of interesting people, however did not like sitting behind a computer and would always be dreaming of getting out of the city, away from the stress and back to the mountains. In 2012 I finally was able to totally renovate and reopen our property with the new name " Bear Country Lodge." I am living my dream and I love being able to share this beautiful place with my guests. It is my guests who always tell me "It's Magical".

Diane M. Daly purchased this chalet in 1960

Why Diane M. Daly chose New York

Are you looking for a 'True Adirondack Experience', but want the luxury of an elegant Bavarian style chalet. My Father traveled around the world as a Chief Engineer with the Merchant Marines. He had been everywhere in the world and when he found our property he fell in love with it's uniqueness. The mountains, the peace and quiet, the magnificent stars at night, the calling of the loons. Nestled amongst 100 FT pines Bear Country Lodge is enchanting, swim in our spring fed mountain magical lake, go fishing, go canoeing, paddle boarding, kayaking, hike the beautiful close by trails, sit by your own PRIVATE CAMPFIRE, ( not one that you have to share with the rest of the resort) The chalets are luxurious and cozy with knotty pine very Adirondack style interior, decorated in the Native American style. Luxurious Denali bedding.

My Father originally purchased this property as the Original Stony Creek Dude Ranch back in 1960. I have been coming here for over 50 years now. Please read about our History on owner's website.

What makes this chalet unique

A 'True Adirondack Experience', On site Owner. Luxurious Denali and Hudson Bay blankets, quiet, peaceful, abundant wildlife, magical, unique, special. Nestled amongst beautiful 100 Ft pines. The clean crisp air is intoxicating. Stars magnificent. Away from the maddening crowds. Certain photos obtained from Big Stock Photography.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at Bear Country Lodge could not have been any better. After reading the website I was very impressed with the history and sense of pride shown. After speaking with Diane I knew without a doubt this is where we wanted to vacation. My husband and I and 4 kids, 18, 17, 14, and 7, stayed for a week. Upon arriving we commented on how well kept the grounds were. Diane greeted us at the door and I felt like we were friends. She was so welcoming and immediately we felt comfortable. When Diane opened the door to our chalet my 7 year old commented, " wait till you guys see this?...we all laughed but I was impressed that a 7 year old would notice or care about how beautiful the chalet was. It was very beautiful done in true Adirondack style, knotty pine throughout, cozy, roomy, and had everything we needed, including beautiful bedding. My husband and I loved the front porch with Adirondack chairs and gas grill for BBQ's. A great place to have our coffee in the morning and enjoy the sunrise, and also cook our dinners at night while watching the sunset and listening to the Loons. We had our own campfire that the kids loved and cooked smores on at night while gazing at the mesmerizing stars. Diane would come by every night to make sure we had everything we needed and give the kids a ride on the golf cart. The lake was fantastic with the family of loons to watch and hear, and we got a great photo of an American Bald Eagle flying right over our heads which Diane has now posted on Facebook. We biked, went swimming, boating, horseback riding, visited nearby attractions, and just relaxed. As we sat at the dinner table reconnecting with each other, laughing, realizing that our daughter was going off to college in the fall, we realized this vacation spending quality time with our children is just what we needed. Our family like a lot of families have children involved in activities, jobs that we tend to bring home with us and everyday routines that disconnect us. Bear Country lodge, Diane's hospitality, our quality family time and all the great laughter has left us with great memories that will last a lifetime.

Fantastic Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Bear Country Lodge for our family vacation. On the curvy dead end road you drive in on I did have one thought- did I make a mistake? Then at the end of the curvy road you find this little oasis. The property is manicured and very well kept. Then we met Diane and you understand- she takes immense pride in everything thing she does and has very high standards. The chalet was immaculate, the couch was just upgraded to a very nice leather sofa and the matching leather recliner is on its way. The amenities were very nice. The area down by the water was very nice with many options for boats to use. Our 3 boys loved the selection and the fishing as well. We mountain biked a great deal and found the roads and choices for riding lots of fun (Warrensburg, Lake George, Stoney Creek). Next time we may take Diane suggestion of going up to Gore mountain and riding our bikes on their trails. Great place- fires at night, Popsicles and a comfortable clean Chalet.

Owner's Response: I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay at Bear Country Lodge. Thank you for your appreciation of my property. I take great pride and have a true love for this beautiful property that I inherited from my Father. My goal, as was my Dad's, is to make the guests happy, make them feel like family, like this is their home away from home. I enjoyed having you vacation with me. So beautiful to see such well behaved, polite, well mannered boys, with such a love of nature. You have done a great job. Thank you so much I hope to see you again soon. Diane

Get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

Bear Country Lodge is unique in its ability to allow you to unplug and unwind. I had a great feeling about our trip after booking and speaking with Diane, and that feeling was reinforced again and again throughout our stay. Diane has a passion for her lodge, for nature, and for hospitality, which makes your stay that much more memorable.

Comfortable and beautiful accommodations were provided, including sleeping room for six, two full bathrooms, and a large, well-stocked kitchen. We spent practically every day at Harrisburg Lake; fishing, swimming, boating, or just taking in the beautiful scenery. The grounds have plenty to offer too - nets for badminton and volleyball, a tetherball, and lawn games. There's also a wonderful little barn that is actually a game room, offering a ping pong table and various board games.

Aside from the ability to unplug, what we liked best about the experience was the freedom and independence it provided our child guests (7 and 9). The caliber of our fellow guests and the proximity of the chalets allowed the kids to roam freely and make new friends, and to play like we did when we were children.

The location boasts such natural beauty, but if you are looking for additional adventure, Diane has some great recommendations/suggestions. We explored the natural caves, which were amazing and well worth the trip. Two of us even took advantage of the proximity of Montreal, and had an international day trip.

This was our first annual family vacation, and one that we hope to repeat for many years to come!

Bear Country Lodge - the cure for nature deficit disorder

  • 5 of 5

In the interest of full disclosure, I found the Bear Country Lodge because I searched VRBO for lake front properties with WiFi. But here’s the thing, we need connectivity, but we’d also like to feel disconnected from everyday life.

The Bear Country Lodge provides that perfect hybrid of super comfy beds, a thoughtfully outfitted kitchen, great WiFi and a concierge-host in Diane Daly who is attentive without hovering all in an awe-inspiring natural setting.

Harrisburg Lake is pristine, incredibly beautiful and not crowded. There are multiple small islands that are host to wildflowers including many lily species. The water lilies on the lake are absolutely amazing—it’s like a page out of National Geographic. (There is also ample “open water” at a perfect temperature for swimming.) We really enjoyed the variety of watercraft available and were on the water every single day!

The Lodge and its chalets are off the beaten path, but still close to regional attractions—easy to get to Lake George Village, Lake Champlain, and Lake Placid, but at the end of the day there is the calm of Harrisburg Lake. Without the light pollution you’d find in Lake George Village or similar towns, you can see the stars on a scale rarely seen.

Like the great Adirondack Camps of the past, the lodge and the chalets are eclectic and reflect the travels of the host. The chalets are decorated with handwoven rugs and Hudson Bay wool blankets, antique rattan furniture from Taiwan, vintage snowshoes and fly fishing baskets, but with modern conveniences like new leather couches, the world’s most comfortable recliner (guaranteed to induce sleep) and a flat screen TV and DVD player. If you forget something, just ask and Diane will undoubtedly make every reasonable effort to accommodate. She is an incredibly gracious host.

A must while in Stony Creek is the TRADING POST where you will find handmade totem art (totem poles) by master craftsman JOHNNY THORPE. A true cowboy, Mr. Thorpe is a fascinating individual, having spent decades as a fur trapper, treasure hunter and purveyor of goods. His prices are excellent and his goods diverse. His Native American carvings are featured prominently on the immaculate grounds at the Lodge.

We all wholeheartedly enjoyed our time at Bear Country Lodge and recommend it highly. A unique property with a fascinating history and it’s clear that the Lodge is a labor of love—if only all in the hospitality industry were so hospitable!

Owner's Response: Dear Renee and Family, It was an honor to have you stay as my guests at Bear Country Lodge. My Resort is all about reconnecting with nature and with each other and getting away from the high-tech world. My entire theme is "Immerse yourselves in nature... the world will wait..." and wait it did with your family because you really understood what Bear Country Lodge is all about and how I am trying to help people to relax. I enjoyed watching your family swimming in crystal clear Harrisburg Lake, spending hours kayaking, enjoying the indigenous lily pads, flora and fauna, canoeing, paddle boarding, campfires at night, star watching and just relaxing. Yes, time stands still here. After a few days I could see the transformation in all of you taking place and serenity engaging you. I was thrilled that Jenny was able to join me for the wonderful Yoga class and hope she will be a future guest when I start my upcoming yoga retreats. Your family was able to disconnect and yes I understand that professionals like yourselves must still make yourselves available by the internet and that is why I provide the 5 bar WIFI. Thank you for all the accolades in regards to my chalet. I read and studied books about the Great Camps of the Adirondacks when deciding my decor and tried to recreate the rustic elegance of the time period. I enjoyed decorating the knotty pine chalets, collecting Native American artifacts from around the country, chose the fabric and had my curtains custom made, bought the best most comfortable Denali and Hudson Bay blankets, and searched years for the most vintage of snowshoes. My Father, on his worldly travels collected the beautiful antique rattan furniture from Taiwan and had it shipped to the US in 1975. I wanted to recreate the feeling of " the Great Camps of the Adirondacks" reminiscent of the yesteryears. Thank you for showing such great respect for my belongings and leaving my chalet so clean. I really enjoyed all of our conversations, you are worldly fascinating people. I appreciate all of your compliments about my hospitality, I try very hard to please my guests but with guests like you, you make my job easy. I wish you all the best in your move to California. Happy you had the opportunity to meet my good friend famous Johnny Thorpe and buy his Totem carvings, and see a the Bear lazily crossing the road on the way. I hope our paths will cross again. Loved having you as my guests . I give YOU 5 *****stars. Many Thanks, D

Great place but...

  • 4 of 5

Overall great place & have no complaints except that we rented our cottage thinking it is 3 BR but it was 2 BR (doors closed) and 3rd was made outside of 2nd BR in the loft area. Also there was only 1 bath so 6 people with 1 bath kind of got to us at the end of the trip.....hence the 4 stars :- )

Keep in mind not all cottages have the balcony & lake view is only from the owner's cottage

Diane is a great lady :- )

Would definitely go back again

Owner's Response: Dear Priti, Thank you for your recent review. The VRBO photos show and describe the 3rd bedroom stating that it is partially open with 2 twin beds. I get a lot of families here and this works out just great for them, the kids love it ! , and it has never been a problem, however, I can understand that it may have been a problem for your party sharing the chalet with all adults... who gets the twin beds ? You stated in your review that the chalet had only 1 bath however, the actual chalet that you rented had one full bath downstairs and also 1/2 bath upstairs. I do understand that more baths are always better. Unfortunately being a very late booking right before " busy Memorial Day" the chalet with 2 full baths had already been rented. My website is referenced on VRBO and has an aerial photo of the location of the chalet and Lake. I am happy that your guests expressed to me on several occasions that my resort was amazing and I appreciated their accolades and your comment on your review that I was great and that you would definitely come back. I try to do everything possible to please my guests. Thank you. Warm regards, Diane

Great vacation to get away from it all.

  • 4 of 5

This is a great little place to go when you want to get away from it all. The cabins are on a quite mountain road, beautiful grounds and, very attentive Inn keepers. The cabins were very tastefully decorated with tons of rustic charm and the cleanest place that we've ever stayed. The beds were very comfortable, which is usually our complaint when renting a cabin or house, not this time. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are looking for an out of the way place that is close enough to the busy Lake George tourist area and yet far away when you want piece and quiet.

Owner's Response: Dear Julie, and Family, Thanks so much for the compliments about the Grounds being meticulous here at Bear Country Lodge because I work very hard to keep them this way. I am happy to hear that this was the cleanest place that you ever stayed, and that the beds were so comfortable. It was my pleasure to be attentive to your needs. You were great guests and I hope to see you again next year, or maybe in the Fall. Kindly, Diane.

We Vacationed in God's Country !

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a very special place for a family vacation. We spent countless hours viewing a tremendous amount of rentals from VRBO before deciding to call Diane, the owner of Bear Country Lodge. Diane was very professional, personable, and answered all kinds of questions that we had. She assured us that we would love the chalet, the peace and quiet, the magical lake, and that we would feel very comfortable about our sons security. She shared that the resort had been in her family for over 50 years and that this was truly a labor of love for her. I shared with Diane that I was a Christian and was elated to find out she was also and we spoke about getting away from worldly distractions and finding solitude with God. I decided right then that this was the perfect place to share with my family and booked our vacation.

Diane Greeted us with open arms upon our arrival. We immediately fell in love with the chalet. It was beautiful, everything about it spoke comfort, immaculately clean, bathrooms were spotless, kitchen well equipped, deluxe bedding, and plenty of room for our family of 6.

Mornings we sat on the front deck sipping our coffee, reading nature books, listening to the birds, enjoying the stillness, and overlooking beautiful mountain views.

Afternoons were spent swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing, and fishing in the spring fed, crystal clear glistening waters of Harrisburg Lake just steps from our chalet. While fishing from a kayak one morning our son Daniel caught a Large Mouth Bass and proudly cooked it for us later that evening in a cast iron skillet over the open campfire.

What a treat ! The boys loved playing Ping Pong in the recreation hall and riding their bikes exploring the area.

A couple of nights we watched Family movies provided by the lodge but mostly we loved to sit by our own personal campfire, roast marshmallows, and due to the absence of ambient light were amazed at how stunning and brilliant the stars were. Unbelievable views of the Milky way and roaming satellites. Diane was very friendly and hospitable, always making us feel right at home.Whatever we needed she enthusiastically provided. She even introduced us to her good friend and celebrity Johnny T, a famous Totem pole carver, trapper, and treasure hunter, who entertained us with fascinating stories. We all agreed that it was the best vacation ever. We were all sad to leave, some tears were shed, but we agreed that we would definitely be back next year.

Owner's Response: Dear Cheryl, Frank, Michael, Lauren, Daniel and Nathan, What a blessing to have you as my guests. The one word that comes to my mind is "Gratitude". You were so gracious, appreciate and so thankful for everything. I am so happy that your long awaited vacation was just what you were looking for. Happy that you loved the chalet and were so comfortable. I loved watching all of you having such a great time, swimming, boating, paddle boarding, fishing, laughter by the campfire, Daniel catching the Big Bass. I was sad to see you leave. I hope to see you again for years to come. Until then, Thank you and God Bless all of you. Love, Diane
