You will have to see this peaceful beautiful home to believe what good fortune may come your way! A spectacular 180 degree view overlooks the Kona coast from a lovely lanai, Kona Le'a Guest House is located in the quiet rural hills above Kailua-Kona, just minutes away from the ocean. Beautiful Hawaiiana decor sets a relax-and-enjoy mood. Set back far from the road on five acres of tropical greenery, chocolate and fruit trees--you will enjoy strolling around the property, picking fruit, taking pictures of flowers. Three bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. Perfect for couples traveling together or alone and ideal for families. Gourmet kitchen fully stocked for all your cooking needs. Office, lanai and dining room with a great view. Piano room. Everything you need (WiFi, Cable TV, IPOD connected stereo system, pantry with washer and dryer) and more is here for your stay. You will find it to be the perfect temperature at this elevation in the hills above Kona.
Des and Lisen were both born in Hawaii, Des' family first having arrived in the early 1800's. We have a coffee farm, Holualoa Kona Coffee Company, about a half a mile from this property where we grow, mill and roast coffee for many farmers in the Kona area. Free tours of our organic farm are offered. Des is a farmer at heart and also enjoys growing chocolate, breadfruit and tropical fruits which you will see surrounding Kona Le'a Guest House as well. In our free time we enjoy ocean swimming, stand up paddle boarding, surfing and hiking. We live in the center of the island in the small town of Waimea where our children go to school.
Lisen purchased this house in 1998
We love the privacy of living in the rural hills above all the action of Kona--but also enjoy being close to it. It's a perfect spot between two worlds. This elevation has a delightful temperature--never too hot or cold, just right. This home has a special feel to it--a feeling of old Hawaii with all the comforts you enjoy.
Huge old trees surrounding the house give a feeling of being in a tree house--tucked away in a tropical wonderland of flowers and fruit trees. A great feeling of privacy with a grand view of the Kona coast.
Two couples from Tucson, visiting the Big Island again, as we have for many years, and we stumble upon this glorious home that welcomes us at every turn. To say we are taken with the charm of this home is an understatement. The decor, the wonderful kitchen, the comfy lanai, and the lush grounds all come together to create a magical setting for an amazing stay on the island. As our adventure unfolds we soon realize we will someday return to this heavenly place. This is our first stay here but not our last. This vacation home has exceeded our expectations in so many ways. The painted panels on the walls, the magnificient light fixtures, the special touches throughout, and the beautiful artwork all unique and calming. Our island oasis.
Having been to Hawaii many times over the years with my wife, we thought we had experienced some great places to stay.
This Holualoa estate is absolutlely the best bar none. We found Desmond and Lisen last year and stayed for our first time and fell in love with this grande home. I say home because that's what it feels like from the moment you arrive.
Everything about staying here is wonderful from the booking process down to the last detail in the decor of this home.
Cathy and I just left and are planning our next trip back. If you are looking for a place with plenty of space as well comfort and privacy this is it. Thank you once again to Lisen and Desmond, and I want to thank auntie Cindy who is on site and is a treasure.
Mahalo and Aloha

The photos in the listing for Kona Le'a Guest House give a very accurate portrayal of the property and its surroundings. We were not disappointed. The driving directions provided by the owner were precise and we found the driveway in the dark of night with no problem.
The house would be perfect for two couples to share. The master bedroom is on a wing of its own and can be isolated from the rest of the house. The second bedroom is a nice size and adjacent to the third bedroom that has two single beds to accommodate a couple of children but still provide privacy.
The kitchen is large and airy with all the tools, cookware and appliances you need to prepare meals. We used it quite a bit because restaurant prices in the Kona area tend to be on the high side. Costco is about 25 minutes away, while Walmart, Safeway and KTA are about 15 minutes away.
When not exploring the island we spent a lot of time on the lanai. The view of the Kona coast is priceless. An evening magarita while watching the sunset was a daily ritual.
The house is well-maintained and an on-site representative of the owner lives on the property. She was able to help us with any issues or questions that we had during our stay.
We spent the entire month of August in the house and all of us thought we got excellent value for our vacation dollar. I would gladly recommend it to family and friends.
During our stay we ate at the Royal Thai Cafe (Keauhou Shopping Center) many times. There is a Long’s Drugs and KTA grocery store in the same complex and you can get just about anything you need there without having to deal with the busy traffic and sometimes difficult parking in Kona.
For beer aficionados I can recommend the Kona Brewery for fresh local brews, pizza and sandwiches. Scout out the location on Google Maps and follow the directions, their old parking lot is no longer available and it can be a long walk on a hot day if you park in the adjacent shopping center. A Firerock Pale Ale and a Captain Cook pizza makes for a great lunch.
Our biggest disappointment? Hilo Hattie’s is closed—both in Kona and Hilo. One of our party was set on buying a couple of muumuus to replace ones that are beginning to age.
Again, the Kona Le’a Guest House is a good place to take a relaxing break from the “real world”.
Not being beach people and wanting cooler temps than near the water, this was the perfect location for the two of us. Short trip to the grocery store and restaurants and very private. Holuakoa Cafe is one of our favorite places to eat, and it is just a quick drive down Mamalahoa Rd. Large rambling home (we only used half of the house) with ocean views. Wonderful large lanai with multiple seating. Gracious hosts. You can't do better.
Our stay at Kona Le'a Guest House exceeded our expectations. We visit family yearly and were delighted to find this rental gem near their home in Holualoa.
With it's beautiful ocean view, immaculate condition and amenities, we quickly felt at home. We especially enjoyed returning to the rural piece and quiet of upcountry after busy Kona days, family activities, and Big Island day trips. Having already reserved our next stay at Kona Le'a, we eagerly look forward to our return!
Lisen and Des are very responsive and welcoming hosts. Mahalo to them both for providing their lovely home and special "Aloha" to our Big Island experience!
After seeing the online photos and description of this home in Kona, I was so excited to actually arrive there with my husband for a two week stay in Nov./Dec. 2015. It couldn't possibly live up to my expectations, but oh my, it certainly did, and even more! This Kona Le'a home sits smack in the middle of the most beautiful grounds and coffee plantation, and has a panoramic view of the entire Kona bay! We loved strolling the grounds, looking at all the beautiful flowers and plants, picking papayas right off the trees (the bananas were not ripe yet) and in the evenings, sitting out on the huge lanai, watching the sunset over the ocean and the boats passing by. The home itself is a work of art, beautifully laid out with windows all along the back side so you can view the ocean from almost every room. Filled with art and antiques, lovely flower tiles and paintings in every room and comfortable bedding after a day of sight seeing, it is a very welcoming home. Seemed we were isolated in our own private paradise, being off the main highway and very quiet and private. The owners, Des and Lisen, were quick to respond if we needed anything or had any questions. Actually, all our needs were met so other than getting a little lost on our first drive up to the home, we didn't need to ask for anything. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything one could need for cooking, although we did little of that. The owners were thoughtful to provide some home grown Kona coffee for our drinking pleasure.
We loved Kona and enjoyed strolling through the town, trying different restaurants, visiting shops and galleries. One little Thai restaurant right on Ali'i Drive was really good so we went there a couple of times, can't remember the name of it. Of course, we ate at Pancho & Lefty's and enjoyed their margaritas and Mexican food. We definitely want to return and do some things we didn't get to do on this last trip. We especially want to spend more time at Kona Le'a. Some days we didn't want to leave the house, it was such a pleasure to enjoy all it had to offer. But when in Kona, you gotta get out.
I would definitely recommend this home to families or couples. It is an unforgettable vacation destination. I have visited Kona many times and always stayed down on Ali'i Drive in a condo, but this private home and location has changed that mindset. I can't wait to return to Kona Le'a, the sooner, the better! Thank you Des and Lisen!
This is a fabulous property with plenty of space for our family of 7 to enjoy. The owners are very gracious, supplying every amenity possible. Each room has it's own charm and the home is immaculate, with upscale décor throughout. Every evening was spent watching the gorgeous sunset on the spacious lanai while relaxing with cool drinks & pupus. We plan to re-book next year, even if it's just two of us! Driving to town is an easy 10 minute drive, although look for the darling little store about a mile down the road that offers the basics. Best vacation ever... partially due to this special home.
Just south of the small artist town of Holualoa, perched on the mountain above Kailua-Kona is a perfect place to enjoy Hawaii at its best. You've got the ideal temperature here where you can quickly escape the heat and crowds of Kailua-Kona. The lovely town of Holualoa is just a little over a mile away for you to wander through and get a feel for this creative artist community. Here some of the finest coffee in the world is grown. Mamalahoa Highway is a historic scenic drive that winds you through Kona coffee farms and tropical plantings. Kailua-Kona and Keauhou are so close (10 minutes!) for all your beaches, groceries, dining and entertainment.
