Red ‘Ohana Owner, Laura Monahan, has over 30 years experience in the luxury hotel industry. She is the ultimate host and never misses a detail when it comes to making your stay at the Red ‘Ohana memorable. You can find her most mornings paddling along Mauna Kea Beach or hiking through the beautiful Waimea hills with her two Australian Shepherds. Laura lives in Waimea with her husband and their 2 children. Come experience a piece of paradise here at the Red ‘Ohana!
Red ‘Ohana Manager, Megan Peterson, has a background in business and hospitality. She has a passion for creating unique experiences for guests and can assist you with anything from planning a Mauna Kea Summit picnic under the stars, diving with manta rays, or a sunset sail along the Kohala Coast. Megan and her family have been on the Big Island for over 30 years and she and her husband are expecting their second daughter.
Red 'Ohana distinguishes itself from other vacation rentals first and foremost because of the casual elegance that you just won't find elsewhere except at exorbitantly priced resorts (and without our amenities). Our property is both spacious and private, and the ohanas were the original Parker Ranch caretakers' quarters. Once you explore the island, you will appreciate the mild, temperate climate. The property atmosphere is relaxed and your peace will not be impacted by noisy roosters, coqui frogs, pets, or other animals. Your access to Waimea town is a 5 minute drive and access to beautiful beaches is an easy, scenic 8 minute drive. It would be difficult to find a property with all of features and amenities for the same price elsewhere on the island. Sometimes local residents stay with us for their weekend getaway. Many parents stay with us when visiting their children who attend the prestigious Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
- Five-star luxury accommodations at lower prices than resorts
- Proximity to Hawaii's best beaches, nearby attractions, and east side of the island.
- Attentive, experienced concierges for property or activity needs
- Strong connection to old Hawaii and historic Parker Ranch, and an active community not overcome with tourists.
- Moderate climate - neither hot like the coast nor chilly even at night.
Both Laura and the home were lovely! Laura was available for suggestions, questions, and anything we needed, but gave us privacy too! Quick drive down to the beaches but it was lovely to return to cool Waimea! The house was immaculate, the kitchen had everything we needed, beds were comfy and plenty of fresh towels, linens and even a closet of beach toys! We will be back! Thanks, Laura!
The Red Ohana is a wonderfully appointed gem in Waimea! We offer our highest recommendation. We stayed in the 2-bedroom home and we loved so many things about this cottage. Where shall I begin? The wrap-around lanai (porch) is extremely relaxing and private. The beds are very comfortable and the neighborhood is quiet–so sleep is peaceful. There are even window over-blinds in front of slated blinds, so you have a wonderful choice of sunlight shining in, or darkness, which is great for sleeping. The large couches allow you to lounge nicely; and the cottage has high quality front end washer/dryer, complete with a laundry sink! I think every possible kitchen utensil you could ever hope for is provided: There is even a picnic basket! And, well, the French Press and Coffee Grinder became my morning necessity.
We also loved, loved, loved the location, across from HPA, just a very short drive to Waimea Town Centre, and just 20 minutes to some of the best white sand beaches in the world. Plus, the temperate elevation is refreshingly cooler than sea level, which we love. This cottage is on dry side Waimea (there is a wet side and a dry side), so it is sunnier, too.
The owner takes extremely good care of the Red Ohana; she truly cares about the guest experience; and she is very accommodating yet respectful of privacy, too. Housekeeping is fabulous as well.
Wonderful home and location. The home includes everything you might ever need during your stay. Laura is a wonderful host and if red is your favorite color - this is the place for you.
Our ten day stay in this beautiful cottage was truly wonderful. The amenities provided in this vacation home are second to none. From luxury linens and towels to comfortable beach chairs and mats, there was everything to make our holiday complete. This Kamuela location is private and quiet yet provides easy access to Kohola's best beaches, some fine restaurants and the amenities of small town Hawaii. Laura's attention to our needs and queries was particularly special. It was liking having our own concierge service. Attentive, yet unintrusive. Her suggestions for day trips or restaurants were always reliable and allowed us to have a memorable holiday. We will certainly return to the Red O'Hana, in all likelihood with friends and family.
Everything was great and expertly taken care of...the only flaw was the bathroom that is in need of a major remodeling...all else great...
After visiting Big Island a few times and staying on the Hilo side, we wanted a different experience. My husband and I decided on Upcountry Waimea and found Red 'Ohana online. The pics are amazing but the place is even better. We went to celebrate my 40th birthdays and I cant imagine a better place to have turned 40. We brought another couple along making 4 adults total and we fit very comfortably, each having private bedrrom and shared a bathroom. The Home was cozy, clean, and appointed with everything a house could need and more. The Red 'Ohana is close to beaches, ideal location for day trips for hiking or horseback riding. While Red Ohana is close to Waimaea town for meals or to grab groceries to make dinners at home, it is also tucked away enough for evenings filled with star gazing. We made most meals at home because the kitchen is full of supplies and the outdoor patio with table and was perfect to eat, drink, and relax on after a day filed with sunshine. On our first night we contacted Laura about a very minor issue with the tv she responded immediately and was close by to personally solve the mystery. The owners were in touch with me during the planning phase of vacation to offer support and had great advice. I cant recommend Red 'Ohana highly enough! Don't miss this opportunity!
Red 'Ohana (2BR and 3BR) provides the most authentic connection to old Hawaii with truly ideal weather, plenty of modern conveniences, quick access to resort beaches, and without the feeling of being in a tourist town. Two shopping centers, several art galleries, a performing arts theater, fine and casual dining, a sense of community, and the best beaches in the state are just some of the reasons to stay with us here Kamuela/Waimea. No where else on the island are there 4 weekly farmers markets - 3 on Saturday, 1 on Wednesday. Taste and experience the aloha among friends, families, and farmers. Cook up fresh organic produce and local beef in our gourmet kitchen or BBQ on the lanai. Amenities abound - use the stable of bodyboards, beach chairs, and beach umbrellas. We can suggest, plan, or arrange a tour or itinerary suited to your interests, time, and priorities. At the end of the day, sleep in the most luxurious beds - resort beds won't compare.
Take advantage of our 30 years of hospitality experience and knowledge of this amazing island that we call home. Our personal mission is to exceed your expectations so our attention to detail is evident throughout.
