About Laura

Red ‘Ohana Owner, Laura Monahan, has over 30 years experience in the luxury hotel industry. She is the ultimate host and never misses a detail when it comes to making your stay at the Red ‘Ohana memorable. You can find her most mornings paddling along Mauna Kea Beach or hiking through the beautiful Waimea hills with her two Australian Shepherds. Laura lives in Waimea with her husband and their 2 children. Come experience a piece of paradise here at the Red ‘Ohana!

Red ‘Ohana Manager, Megan Peterson, has a background in business and hospitality. She has a passion for creating unique experiences for guests and can assist you with anything from planning a Mauna Kea Summit picnic under the stars, diving with manta rays, or a sunset sail along the Kohala Coast. Megan and her family have been on the Big Island for over 30 years and she and her husband are expecting their second daughter.

Why Laura chose Hawaii

Red 'Ohana distinguishes itself from other vacation rentals first and foremost because of the casual elegance that you just won't find elsewhere except at exorbitantly priced resorts (and without our amenities). Our property is both spacious and private, and the ohanas were the original Parker Ranch caretakers' quarters. Once you explore the island, you will appreciate the mild, temperate climate. The property atmosphere is relaxed and your peace will not be impacted by noisy roosters, coqui frogs, pets, or other animals. Your access to Waimea town is a 5 minute drive and access to beautiful beaches is an easy, scenic 8 minute drive. It would be difficult to find a property with all of features and amenities for the same price elsewhere on the island. Sometimes local residents stay with us for their weekend getaway. Many parents stay with us when visiting their children who attend the prestigious Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

What makes this cottage unique

- Five-star luxury accommodations at lower prices than resorts

- Proximity to Hawaii's best beaches, nearby attractions, and east side of the island.

- Attentive, experienced concierges for property or activity needs

- Strong connection to old Hawaii and historic Parker Ranch, and an active community not overcome with tourists.

- Moderate climate - neither hot like the coast nor chilly even at night.

Exactly what we were looking for

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house along with the 3 bedroom house to accommodate a large family trip. This was perfect housing.. neat, clean and fully equipped for my parents and grandparents to have a comfortable and relaxing "home base" on our vacation. Truly felt like the comforts of home. Some of our favorite things about this house were the beautiful wrap-around porch with ample seating to enjoy a breakfast of coffee and papaya. There are lush plants surrounding the patio that also give it a more secluded and private feel. My family also appreciated the attention to detail with all of the amenities. It makes a huge difference when you don't have to worry about kitchen supplies, bath or beach towels or even detergent for the laundry. Our hosts were the epitome of hospitality, calling to check in and stopping by as well, however they did not overdo it at all. Perfect balance. We would absolutely stay here again and recommend the Red Ohana to family and friends.

cute house in a quiet area

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with the property and location for our needs. The home was very clean, well equipped and quiet. We are already planning our next trip back! It is a in a non-touristy area where you would definitely need a car if you plan to go to beaches, etc. The closest is around 20 minutes away.

Outstanding!

  • 5 of 5

This place was quite a find. We have rented through VRBO in the past and have often found that the photos and descriptions tend to paint the place in the best possible light. Not the case here, if anything the Red Ohana was better than described. The kitchen is well stocked with all the pots, pans and utensils you'll need to make meals, right down to a rice cooker and a very nice gas grill. It is clean, quiet and comfortable. If I could go back and change anything I'd stay longer. This is an excellent place for families and anyone looking to get away from the typical island resorts and experience authentic Hawaiian living. It's definetly not beachfront, sitting up at 2,500' above sea level, and that's a good thing as night time temperatures can get down to the 60's while the poor folks down at sea level try to sleep while roasting in 90 degree temps. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that if you're looking for something quiet, comfortable and off the beaten path a bit, you won't be disappointed.

A perfect place for a vacation on Big Island

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit on Big Island and we choose Waimea pointedly after our first stay on Big Island. Looking for a rental home on the internet we found the Red Ohana not knowing that this was the perfect retreat for us.

The house is perfectly equipped with everything you need – be it for cooking, for going to the beach or only for relaxing at the house itself – you will find everything you are looking for. We loved the historic pictures and the wonderful red layout of the entire house.

Laura and Megan are very thoughtful in every way. I became ill and both were very caring and were trying to help in every way. I forgot my ID at the hospital and they called Megan and a few minutes later she was at the house asking if everything is ok!

If we will ever come back to Hawai’i we definitely will choose the Red Ohana again for our home away from home.

The Red Ohana was the perfect base for exploring the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent nine days in the Big Island and stayed at the Red Ohana 2-bedroom. First, the location on the island was just right for us--an hour to Kona one direction, an hour to Hilo the other way, and accessible to any part of the island. Waimea is a nice-sized town with enough to do and plenty of places to eat and shop. The house itself was comfortable, cozy, and spotlessly clean. For two couples it was perfect, with two nice bedrooms, a comfortable big living room, and a small but well-stocked kitchen. We much appreciated the washer and dryer and the supply of beach towels, mats, and chairs. The lanai was a perfect place to sit and enjoy the soft Hawaii air and listen to the birds, and there was a very attractive garden with fruit trees and blooming flowers. Finding the place at night was a little tricky--the driveway is hard to see without light on the red mailbox--but we quickly mastered that. Three of our days the tradewinds blew hard and the weather at night was downright cool, but we appreciated the warm beds with their quilts and spent our days in warmer parts of the island. My wife, son and daughter-in-law and I would gladly stay there again, and we're trying to interest our other children in the three-bedroom Red Obama next door.

Red 'Ohana (2BR and 3BR) provides the most authentic connection to old Hawaii with truly ideal weather, plenty of modern conveniences, quick access to resort beaches, and without the feeling of being in a tourist town. Two shopping centers, several art galleries, a performing arts theater, fine and casual dining, a sense of community, and the best beaches in the state are just some of the reasons to stay with us here Kamuela/Waimea. No where else on the island are there 4 weekly farmers markets - 3 on Saturday, 1 on Wednesday. Taste and experience the aloha among friends, families, and farmers. Cook up fresh organic produce and local beef in our gourmet kitchen or BBQ on the lanai. Amenities abound - use the stable of bodyboards, beach chairs, and beach umbrellas. We can suggest, plan, or arrange a tour or itinerary suited to your interests, time, and priorities. At the end of the day, sleep in the most luxurious beds - resort beds won't compare.

Take advantage of our 30 years of hospitality experience and knowledge of this amazing island that we call home. Our personal mission is to exceed your expectations so our attention to detail is evident throughout.
