Lovely location and amenities, upstairs great, downstairs 3 bedrooms not so great

  • 4 of 5

Just returned, had a wonderful time, but our family voted not to return because the downstairs bedrooms were not that great. We are four adult couples plus 2 toddlers and a 5-year-old. The two upstairs bedrooms are nice with en suite baths, but the downstairs is rather dumpy, dark and musty with only one good-sized bedroom. (The downstairs hide-a-bed was broken.)

We picked the property in part because it had a dock on Mitchell Bay and we had a boat that we wanted to bring with us. When we booked we did not realize that the bay is a mud-flat when the tide is out so you can only get in and out of the dock about half the time. We made it work and really enjoyed having the small boat with outboard that we brought, caught crabs, took the kiddies for rides. etc. Dock is in good shape.

Internet modem is fairly slow and mobile coverage (t-mobile, for me) was borderline but workable. Someone said the TV didn't work but that is a plus from our family's point of view.

Now here are all the many great things about the property! Large acreage in a wonderful, secluded part of the island, upstairs is large and lovely, wonderful separate "game room" which is really a separate building with good ping-pong table, pool table, and all sorts of sports equipment, balls, frisbees, life jackets, etc. There also is a cute rowboat for the renters that works well in Mitchell Bay, which is very calm and protected.

Kitchen was pretty well stocked with decent pots and pans, bowls, knives etc for serious cooking. (We are a bunch of foodies so cooking is a big part of our vacations, and we bring quite a bit of equipment "just in case.") Bring your own large pot if you want to boil crabs. Lots of crockery and silverware. Nice hammock, good books and games and puzzles. Comfortable large sofas and easy chairs upstairs arranged in a square, room for the whole family to sit around and play charades or whatever. Upstairs showers were large and good, kitchen area large and functional, beds comfortable.

Little ones enjoyed many trips to feed the goats and chickens/ducks, which live on the owner's end of the acreage. We rigged up a little barrier so the toddlers could be on the expansive upper deck and not escape onto the dock or elsewhere before anyone noticed. That worked well.

However, if your idea of vacation is to get drunk and rowdy this is not the place for you, serious outdoor quiet time starts at 9PM

Can not get out on the water!

  • 3 of 5

The upper level of the house was lovely. The lower level, with three of the five bedrooms, was clean but very old. The property is shared with two other homes. I was thinking, water, sand bottom, swimming, fishing and or kayaking but none of that is possible here. The tide goes in and out leaving the Bay dry and exposes a muck bottom. Kayak rentals are $300 a week in town. Quite, peaceful, but can't really get out on the water unless you use a tour company. Ore clamps on the row boat were falling apart so rowing was difficult. Internet is iffy at best, no cell phone service.

Not impressed.

  • 2 of 5

Let me start out by saying that in the 18 years my 10-12 friends and I have been getting together twice a year in various VRBO rentals, this is the first time I've ever written anything but a glowing review about any owners or homes.

Three things.

1. There is NO Internet/wifi at this property, in spite of the listing stating "Internet: wireless internet throughout house." The owners acted surprised when we pointed this issue out to them during our stay. Interesting response to what we've since learned is an ongoing problem for the entire area.

2. The downstairs of this house isn't shown in the (many gorgeous) photos in the listing, but it's much older than the upstairs, is quite funky, not particularly well maintained, and has an uncovered, outdoor staircase attaching the two floors.

3. When I addressed these issues and a few other smaller ones in writing (two times) to the owners, their response response. Surprisingly unprofessional of them.

My friends and I won't be returning to this property.

Mitchell Bay House with incredible bay view and dock

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here last year, and then again this year and loved it. Perfect kitchen to cook in, and added benefit is there are two large refrigerators, one upstairs and an extra downstairs. Excellent large deck to sit on and a large table too. It was super hot during our week, and one extra thing we will bring next year is a shade canopy for the deck. One umbrella does not do the trick. My 81 year old father in law enjoyed the house immensely. There are the two master suites on the main floor. Downstairs are two bathrooms with showers and a big bedroom, plus two little rooms with no windows that were great for the kids, and a fold out couch too. Plenty of room down there for at least a couple of additional blow up beds. We enjoyed wandering the grounds and all the fruit trees were beautiful, deer roaming around, visited the goats, chickens and the aviary. Really fun. The house is very clean and has everything you need.

Nice, but not what we expected

  • 3 of 5

We arrived to find the 5 "bedroom" house we rented still occupied with other guests belongings. Thankfully the house was unlocked so I coukd use the house phone to call owner, note, NO cell service.

After numerous phone calls and assistance from neighbors the tracked down Janet who manages the family property.

Whoops! We were told they made a booking error and overlaped our arrival. Not good news when traveling with 4 children. Thankfully there are other smaller cottages on the 13 acre property and between blow up mattresses and fold out sofa we spent the night.

Notice the property photos only show THREE of the 5 bedrooms.....renters beware. The 2 small bedrooms on the lower level are not acceptable accommodations for adults.

Windows have no screens, little kids don't like bugs in their bedroom!

Washer, "cold" water wash was HOT, by by clothes.

While the property itself is beautiful and manager Janet a lovely lady, do not think this will be a return location for a family vacation.

Beautiful House, Wonderful Landloard

  • 4 of 5

We rented this property during our stay for my brother-in-laws wedding.

The view of this house is breath taking and its truly private. We enjoyed our family time in the upper level family room and got cozy around the fire pit at the evening. But the best of renting this house was its landlord Janice. We had kids and a dog and made a lot of good noise but during it all Janice was warm and welcoming. She even drove all the way to Friday harbor to give us back the wallet we left behind when we checked out.

We will defiantly come back to stay at this house again.
