After many years of extensive travel throughout Patagonia, Graeme & Tammy Shaw found the wonderful Chilean town of Llifen on Lago Ranco in December 2006. This was the real Chile they had been searching for. Graeme and Tammy purchased land on the Fundo Chollinco and built the custom Casa Calcurrupe.
In September 2014 a Chilean Corporation, owned by two friends from Texas, purchased Casa Calcurrupe. Graeme manages the property for them.
Graeme Shaw purchased this house in 2007
This is one of the finest homes available in Southern Chile. It is located on the Rio Calcurrupe and offers world class fishing. Located in the small friendly town of Llifen and a short drive to Futrono in the Region of the Rivers. Futrono is located on Lago Ranco and one of Chile's finest restaurants is here. What is there to do? Hot Springs, horseback riding, fishing, ecotourism, waterfalls, beaches, mountain climbing, hiking, rafting and boating.
The three most important features of this property are: 1) Location in a real Chilean town that is unspoiled by tourism. 2) Well built custom home with a killer hot tub over looking the Rio Calcurrupe. 3) Quiet and peaceful river location that is easy to get to.
We spent a week at the property. We could have stayed, much, much longer! The house and property were as described and depicted in the photos. Indeed, the photos don't do them justice. They are nothing short of spectacular. We have travelled the world and have rarely encountered such a unique (and incredible) property. Our impression is that alot of people come to property to fish, perhaps in larger groups- which I'm sure would be great- but we don't fish and it was just the two of us. It was perfect for us. The property is just as isolated as we hoped it would be. Though it's a relatively short drive from everything you could need, think rural property. We did do a couple of daytrips that Graeme recommended and were glad we did (the trip around the lake, the hot springs-- and would add the little restaurant at Apumanque in LLifen to the list of recommended spots- they have great food and service, as well as wifi if you're inclinded to check from time to time), but we spent most of our time lounging at the property- in particular in the wood fired hot tub. A very romantic spot for couples. We highly recommend a stay!
The house is breathtaking. It is comfortable, well designed, and with excellent quality materials finished. It is the best place if you want to find yourself lost in the middle on nature. Especial mention to the hot tub and the views from the house. Additionally you count with Miguel, the housekeeper, who is extremely friendly and will try to help in anything you ask for. In our case, it also organized a babysitter for our 1 year old daughter, and everything was great. Definitely a place to recommend.
I've been to the "Casa" twice now, and will definitely go again. Both times were different seasons and the fishing was excellent. Trout in the Chilean Summer, and Chinook in the Fall. The natural beauty of the Andes, Rivers and Lakes in this region is stunning. The owners have set up everything to make it easy to enjoy; fishing guides, house amenities, and directions to all the quaint shops and eatery's in the towns around Lago Ranco. Whether you are seeking an outdoor adventure filled with fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, etc....or you are just looking to get away for some solitude and peace and quiet; this is a good place for both. Try it and see for yourself.
The house is fantastic. Even better than the pictures. The view of the river behind the house is memorable. The owner, Graeme, was in contact with me several times and gave me may helpful hints about fishing, the local area, and general information about traveling in Chile. I would highly recommend this vacation home. It was a dream vacation. My wife and I do not speak Spanish but we did fine in the area and the caretaker for the property is very helpful. The fishing in the river is great. My wife and I caught trout every day fly fishing and spin fishing. As a bonus we caught 4 chinook salmon.
This is a perfect retreat for a vacation.
Away from noise and the hazards of civilization, yet, with the confort of a new, fine house with a breathtaking view of the fine fishing River Calcurrupe and its valley.
A nice little town closeby for groceries, etc. and good caretakers and fishing guides available.
If you want to rest and eat the lamb barbecue of your life, come to this house.
You will enjoy it! It´s wonderful!
This is a beautiful property in and out!
The views are awesome and remarkable. The property offers real seclusion and privacy. No property in the region is nicer than this. A unique country rural setting with easy access to Lago Ranco night life. Just 1.25 hours from Valdivia Airport. Awesome fishing on the river, incredible fishing experience! Beautiful deck and hot water spa with evening views of the most star filled night I have ever seen, it felt like being one with the universe looking up and seeing the whole celestial star cluster move before my eyes! This is an exceptional place for a very unique experience.
Llifen is a small, clean, friendly and untouched town of 600 wonderful people and world class fishing.
The Lago Ranco - Llifen area is one of the finest areas in all Chile Patagonia. The Rio Calcurrupe is a world class trout and salmon fishing river. It is one of three 'catch and release' streams in Chile. Absolutely fantastic fly fishing and off the tourist circuit. No American owned lodges or guides here.
A few minutes down the road from Llifen is the town of Futrono, population about 15,000. One of Chile's finest restaurants, De Pellin Y Coique, is located just out of town with panoramic views of Lago Ranco and the Andes. Futrono is also a clean and friendly Chilean town. There are several gasoline stations, super markets, restaurants and cafes on the main street. Fresh fruit and vegetables abound and the store owners will give you personal service. This is truly what life in the USA must have been like in the 50's.
Must do activities include a drive around Lago Ranco? The towns of Puerto Nuevo and Lago Ranco make for great visits. The scenery is spectacular passing through blueberry and dairy farms.
Just outside of Llifen are several beautiful waterfalls and expansive lake beaches. The Termas de Llifen has hot water baths and massages. The Hosteria Chollinco has very good lunches, views from a great deck and Chile's best Pisco Sours.
A few miles up the Rio Calcurrupe Valley is Mavidahue Centro Campestre which offers a Spa Rural, horseback rides, fishing and eco-tourism. This is a fine operation. Another must do is a trip into the Andes to Termas de Chihuio. These hot springs sit high in the Andes on the Chile-Argentine border. A wonderful drive to one of Patagonia's best hot springs.
Llifen is about one hour drive from the Pan-American HWY, all on good paved roads. Valdivia is 1.5 hours away, Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas are 2.5 hours’ drive.
