About Graeme Shaw

After many years of extensive travel throughout Patagonia, Graeme & Tammy Shaw found the wonderful Chilean town of Llifen on Lago Ranco in December 2006. This was the real Chile they had been searching for. Graeme and Tammy purchased land on the Fundo Chollinco and built the custom Casa Calcurrupe.

In September 2014 a Chilean Corporation, owned by two friends from Texas, purchased Casa Calcurrupe. Graeme manages the property for them.

Graeme Shaw purchased this house in 2007

Why Graeme Shaw chose Chile

This is one of the finest homes available in Southern Chile. It is the nicest home, in the best location, for rent in all of Lago Ranco. It is located on the Rio Calcurrupe and offers world class fishing. The home is situated in a high end private river front neighborhood. This property is easy to access on a paved road minutes from Llifen. Located in the small friendly town of Llifen and a short drive to Futrono in the Region of the Rivers. Futrono is located on Lago Ranco and one of Chile's finest restaurants is there. What is there to do? Hot Springs, horseback riding, fishing, ecotourism, waterfalls, beaches, mountain climbing, hiking, rafting and boating.

What makes this house unique

The three most important features of this property are: 1) Location in a real Chilean town that is unspoiled by tourism. 2) Well built custom home with a killer hot tub over looking the famous Rio Calcurrupe. 3) A quiet and peaceful river location that is easy to get to with direct river access. This was a PICTURE PERFECT location

  • 5 of 5

We traveled to Chile this Spring for three weeks. We had a wonderful visit with our Daughter, Son-in-Law, and Granddaughter who are all traveling in Chile for a year (writing a cookbook). This home was in a great location, and the caretaker and fishing guide, Miguel, was a great asset to us. He maintained the property, brought us firewood as needed, cleaned out the fireplace, took the guys fishing a couple of times (my husband caught an impressive one meter long coho salmon.) Who knows. we might rent it again in the future.

A marvelous landscape in a very beatiful and comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

A great and pleasant experience in the always amazing south of Chile. The house has everything that you need to enjoy the marvelous sight. The sound of the wind and the Calcurrupe river, the singing of the chucaos and the different greens of the coigües and pellines compose an antistress lullaby that you will never forget. Miguel, the housekeeper, is very dependable and dedicated.

Lovely stay

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful property on a tranquil river. We had a lovely 10 day stay. House beautifully designed but there are many levels and stairs that could be dangerous for babies or elders. The organization and interior maintenance of the house is not to par with the beauty of the setting.

Couldn't Have Been Better!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the property. We could have stayed, much, much longer! The house and property were as described and depicted in the photos. Indeed, the photos don't do them justice. They are nothing short of spectacular. We have travelled the world and have rarely encountered such a unique (and incredible) property. Our impression is that alot of people come to property to fish, perhaps in larger groups- which I'm sure would be great- but we don't fish and it was just the two of us. It was perfect for us. The property is just as isolated as we hoped it would be. Though it's a relatively short drive from everything you could need, think rural property. We did do a couple of daytrips that Graeme recommended and were glad we did (the trip around the lake, the hot springs-- and would add the little restaurant at Apumanque in LLifen to the list of recommended spots- they have great food and service, as well as wifi if you're inclinded to check from time to time), but we spent most of our time lounging at the property- in particular in the wood fired hot tub. A very romantic spot for couples. We highly recommend a stay!

Lago Ranco: Amazing Experience.

  • 5 of 5

The house is breathtaking. It is comfortable, well designed, and with excellent quality materials finished. It is the best place if you want to find yourself lost in the middle on nature. Especial mention to the hot tub and the views from the house. Additionally you count with Miguel, the housekeeper, who is extremely friendly and will try to help in anything you ask for. In our case, it also organized a babysitter for our 1 year old daughter, and everything was great. Definitely a place to recommend.

Natural Beauty

  • 5 of 5

I've been to the "Casa" twice now, and will definitely go again. Both times were different seasons and the fishing was excellent. Trout in the Chilean Summer, and Chinook in the Fall. The natural beauty of the Andes, Rivers and Lakes in this region is stunning. The owners have set up everything to make it easy to enjoy; fishing guides, house amenities, and directions to all the quaint shops and eatery's in the towns around Lago Ranco. Whether you are seeking an outdoor adventure filled with fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, etc....or you are just looking to get away for some solitude and peace and quiet; this is a good place for both. Try it and see for yourself.

Llifen is a small, clean, friendly and untouched town of 600 wonderful people and world class fishing.

The Lago Ranco - Llifen area is one of the finest areas in all Chile Patagonia. The Rio Calcurrupe is a world class trout and salmon fishing river. It is one of three 'catch and release' streams in Chile. Absolutely fantastic fly fishing and off the tourist circuit. No American owned lodges or guides here.

A few minutes down the road from Llifen is the town of Futrono, population about 15,000. One of Chile's finest restaurants, De Pellin Y Coique, is located just out of town with panoramic views of Lago Ranco and the Andes. Futrono is also a clean and friendly Chilean town. There are several gasoline stations, super markets, restaurants and cafes on the main street. Fresh fruit and vegetables abound and the store owners will give you personal service. This is truly what life in the USA must have been like in the 50's.

Must do activities include a drive around Lago Ranco? The towns of Puerto Nuevo and Lago Ranco make for great visits. The scenery is spectacular passing through blueberry and dairy farms.

Just outside of Llifen are several beautiful waterfalls and expansive lake beaches. The Termas de Llifen has hot water baths and massages. The Hosteria Chollinco has very good lunches, views from a great deck and Chile's best Pisco Sours.

A few miles up the Rio Calcurrupe Valley is Mavidahue Centro Campestre which offers a Spa Rural, horseback rides, fishing and eco-tourism. This is a fine operation. Another must do is a trip into the Andes to Termas de Chihuio. These hot springs sit high in the Andes on the Chile-Argentine border. A wonderful drive to one of Patagonia's best hot springs.

Llifen is about one hour drive from the Pan-American HWY, all on good paved roads. Valdivia is 1.5 hours away, Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas are 2.5 hours’ drive.
