About Ripley Hathaway

I am a landscape architect who grew up on this property. I currently live down the hill from the Carriage House and have spent most of my life along the Hudson River. I would be happy to let you know all the insider information about the Valley and steer you to the best farms and farm stands, restaurants, movie theaters ( including a drive-in) and any other activity you wish to pursue.

Ripley Hathaway purchased this estate in 1966

Why Ripley Hathaway chose Hudson Valley

This property has remained unchanged since the mid nineteenth century when it was first developed by a Robert Livingston. When you come here you are able to relax and experience nature as it was experienced back then within the comforts of a modern home. If you are a birder you will thrill with the sights of our resident Bald Eagle couple, or our flocks of native Wild Turkeys. Other birds that are in residence include Great Blue Herons, Hummingbirds, pileated Woodpeckers and Red tailed Hawks. We keep miles of paths mowed for hikes through out the property. Pick up a picnic lunch at Otto's Market in Germantown and have a picnic by our waterfall or in our old orchards.

What makes this estate unique

You are down a gated half mile private road that is only accessible to you and the owner. Outside the home is comfortable porch furniture and Adirondack chairs on which to relax or finish that book you have wanted to read. We provide wi-fi and a flat screen tv if the weather should keep you inside along with more old fashioned pursuits such as board games and books. Air conditioned for the summer and with a wood burning fireplace for the Fall and Winter ( we provide aged wood for you to burn). There is really no bad season. Should you be attending a wedding in the area this is a great base and ideal for sharing. Our full time property manager is available in case an emergency should arise.

Extremely nice, clean and comfy house

  • 5 of 5

We had a party of 12 and found this last minute house for our hunter ski trip at the president weekend, it's approximate 45 minute away from hunter. Although is a little far away from hunter, but the house is absolutely comfy and have everything we needed. The property manager, Jack, and his wife are super friendly. We definitely recommend any traveler who want to come over for skiing and even coming for the spring/summer time.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely review. You were a delight and would be happy to have you back. For those reading this review we just received 2 feet of snow yesterday and the Ski resorts got 3 feet. This home is currently available for the rest of March. Put on your cross country skis or snow shoes and you can start exploring our 300 acres as soon as you exit the front or back doors .

Bel Air Maryland

A country overnight

  • 5 of 5

We had planned a trip to Vermont from Maryland and wanted to break up the long drive to make it easier. As a treat to ourselves we wanted to stay in a country house or B and B rather than just a hotel. I am so glad we did! We arrived at the main gate and buzzed ourselves in (our hostess had provided us the key code earlier). We drove down the gravel wooded drive to the cottage not knowing exactly what to expect. We let ourselves in and found a very spacious open plan downstairs with a fully furnished kitchen and a fireplace all set up to use if needed. Beautiful hardwood floors! A very quiet country feel. We felt right at home from the beginning. A bit later we took a short drive to Tivoli to get a very nice meal.

The second floor had an open loft area with bookshelves for reading and relaxing. The bed was very comfortable and we slept great! The bathroom was lovely and big. Our hostess had provided us with really nice towels. Everything was immaculate! We loved the peace and quiet and felt very relaxed. The next morning we took a stroll around the property through the woods and fields and even saw some turkeys. The view of the Hudson River and the Catskills beyond is gorgeous. Our only regret was having to leave so soon to continue our trip to Vermont, but we will definitely be back again! Can’t wait!! Wow great place! We absolutely loved it!

This is a beautiful property , close to the Hudson River, set in the woods.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Northwoods. The converted carriage house has been beautifully done: fresh, new bathrooms, a fresh new kitchen, and all the modern conveniences. We stayed during a heat wave and the air conditioning was most welcome. The homeowner was most accommodating, making sure we had all that we needed. We would definitely stay at Northwoods again. Our favorite moments were walking down the hill to see the sunset over the Hudson River. I would say the only thing missing is a set of Adirondack chairs to sit in while we enjoyed the view!

The Carriage House had a lovely yard too, complete with a wonderful deck with comfortable chairs. The house is very close to Rhinebeck, Germantown and Olana. Ripley, thank you for a wonderful stay at a magical place!

Couldn't have picked a better place to host us for our Wedding Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Carriage House for our wedding weekend with our wedding party, and it was a fabulous choice- it slept 12 people comfortably and it had more than enough space (and glassware) for all our needs. The space was large enough to allow both the groom and bridal party to get ready at the same venue, while providing adequate privacy and enough bathrooms/mirrors etc. The design of the house is also amazingly beautiful with exposed wood, and skylights that flood the bedrooms with light. The owners were lovely and absolutely on top of all of the little details, down to getting us distilled water for the iron and making sure we had local goat's milk soap in the bathrooms

Special Hudson Valley

  • 5 of 5

The converted carriage house had everything we were looking for: character, a beautiful location, spacious accommodations for our family of six adults and three children, and easy access to many family-friendly activities. Over the long Columbus Day weekend, we picked apples locally, took the spectacular Walkway Across the Hudson and went as far afield as the Storm King Art Center. The owner greeted us when we arrived, showed us around and responded to questions/needs promptly. This was a wonderful place for a special family weekend.

We are located in the heart of the HUDSON VALLEY, just minutes south of Hudson,NY with its many antique shops and restaurants and 10 minutes north of BARD College and Its Performing Arts Center and 25 minutes north of OMEGA. The art lover in your group would also love touring Frederick Church's home Olana or his mentor Thomas Cole's home in Catskill, NY. Historic Homes of the Livingston Family such as Clermont State Historic Site and Wilderstein are open most days. History buffs would enjoy a day at FDR's homes including the hide away were he met his mistress and Val-Kill the home Eleanor used to get away from it all. Enjoy a concert on the lawn at the Vanderbilt mansion. Perhaps you love horses then take in a show at HITS across the river in Saugerties or a riding lesson just down the road.
