This unit is simply furnished and priced to reflect the no frills condition. Please review the pictures which clearly show the condition of the unit. If you are looking for the best Kona Complex, at the best price, this is it. Clean and fully set up for beach vacationers, with beach equipment, towels, coolers, etc. Private WIFI in the unit. Why pay for fancy upgrades, when you and your bank book can be comfortable for less $.
This ground floor condo has NO STAIRS and has easy access to parking. It is set towards the quiet end of the complex. It features a front lanai with great direct views of the ocean and the beautiful gardens. The lanai has a dining set and very comfortable chairs for sunset watching. The bedroom is equipped with a queen bed with a micro fiber/memory foam topper and there is also a sleeper sofa in the living room. The kitchen has a dishwasher, stove, microwave, refrigerator as well as a stack washer and dryer. There is A/C and ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom. A/C is rarely needed as the mountain/ sea breezes flow right through the unit keeping you comfortable most days. Private secure WIFI is available in the unit (new modem/router) plus the shared complex WIFI is also available throughout the common areas of the complex. There is no smoking in the unit and Kona Makai complex is a non-smoking complex.
Great value for the location. Kona Makai is a beautiful ocean front garden complex with immaculately maintained Hawaiian native plants. It is a very quiet complex with tennis courts, pool, spa, exercise rooms and covered parking (great for keeping the car cool). It is best suited for couples and families with older children (14 and older). There is shared WIFI in the cabana and common areas down by the ocean. Enjoy the beautiful snorkeling reefs right at the property with access (except in high surf). Watch dolphins, sunsets and whales from the great pool area on the ocean with spa and barbecues. Relax and barbecue your fish down by the ocean. Kailua-Kona is also the home of the famous IRONMAN competition in October.
If you don't have transportation, and you're up to walking, it is a very convenient 10 to 15 minute walk to town and well known restaurants like Bubba Gumps. It is also minutes from a famous snorkeling beach with a sea wall, lifeguard, and sea turtles. Enjoy shopping in town and at the open market. There is also a trolley that runs along Ali'i Drive which takes you to the shops, movies and restaurants. In town you'll find many tour companies that will take you to various points of interest on the island.

I fell in love with Hawaii when I came to visit in 1968. I always had a love for Hawaii as my grandmother was born right here on the Big Island back in 1887. My sister also lives in the Islands (Honolulu, Oahu). It took my husband and I until 2003 to move to the Big Island. I was recently widowed, but I still live on our 5 acres down by South Point (the southern most point in the USA) here on the Big Island. Kona is my fun retreat away from rural land chores. I rent the condo out to others to enjoy the Kona life when I'm not using it.

This complex has beautifully maintained tropical gardens and direct access to the ocean. In calm surf, access the tide pools right at the complex.
We had a wonderful stay in Sandra's condo in Kona. It has everything we could have needed (and more). On the way to the condo from the airport we stopped by the local walmart to pickup some items we thought we we going to need (steak seasoning, beach mat,...). To our surprise when we got to the condo, it had many of the items we had purchased. The condo even had some nice extra's like boggie board, beach chairs, snorkel/fins. Sandra takes excellent care of the condo and does a great job cleaning and prep'ing for the next guests. We had the pleasure of meeting her at checkin - such a nice person and very helpful. Told us about some of the cool things to do and see and really made us feel welcome. The Condo directly faces the ocean, so you have a nice unobstructed view of the ocean. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed and the bedroom has a very comfortable bed. We had only a minor plumbing issue (it was actually with the building not with the unit). We called Sandra and the problem was taken care of immediately. In summary, we highly recommend this condo. Thanks so much Sandra for letting us rent your condo for the week. We will definately look for this condo on a return trip to Kona
We spent 4 nights in this beautiful condo. It is well appointed with all amenities. The location is perfect, and it is just the right size for family of three. Very nice owner, very accommodating. I especially love the ocean view from its lanai.
I liked this condo so much that I wanted to move to Kona and never leave the spot. It was really perfect for me and, I think, a bargain. Some things I liked: good communication and super flexible assistance by Susan, great location and easy to walk to restaurants, plentiful covered parking, superior view of the ocean and great breezes, CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN, and all the extras that make staying in a condo special. We had lots of pantry items, beach towels, nice washer/dryer, chairs & beach bags, huge fridge, ice maker!, and more. I stayed at another complex my last visit and this unit was SO much nicer, bigger, and well laid out. Also in comparison to other rentals, the instructions and key situation is nice and easy to manage.
The bedroom is massive and there was plenty of room for using the pull-out sofa in the living room without feeling crowded. The wifi situation was awesome - fast in unit plus the complex itself has wifi so you can use it at the pool, etc. The grounds were beautiful and I never heard a peep out of the neighbors. I could go on, but suffice it to say that if this hits the basic boxes for you (price, location, beds) then this is the best choice in town.
Loved our stay at the condo! The condo was clean, well maintained and comfortable with everything we needed. Great patio view, we could even see spinner dolphins in the morning. The BBQ area easily accessible with a wonderful view of the ocean and sunset. We would definitely recommend!
This was our 6th visit to Kailua Kona in the last 5 years and our first stay at Kona Makai. The complex is located at about 1.5 miles south of downtown Kailua on Alii Dr. which makes it very convenient to town. Like many Kona condo complexes there is a mixture of owners and vacation renters. This combination can be unfriendly to families with small children primarily due to pool rules and noise issues. The grounds are very well kept and the flowers were beautiful. The pool is small but was never very crowded and the ocean front loungers were perfect. We did not use the BBQs but they were Webers and were used nightly. Parking was convenient and we liked parking under the tennis court which kept our car cool in its shade. The condo was comfortable and we particularly enjoyed the lanai and the view (ocean and garden). The in unit washer/dryer is a must have for us. It was also nice to have snorkel gear, cooler and beach chairs. As with a lot of older condos this one is need of some updating including flooring, paint, and a makeover of the bathroom and kitchen. It could also use a larger TV and a stereo would be nice. We spend most of our time outside so the condo interior isn't what makes or breaks our vacation. With new flooring and updated kitchen and bathroom the rating would be 5 stars.
A little dated but We were comfortable in this condo. Beautiful ocean view from our patio with its well manicured garden. Nice location. However we felt the carpet was very much needing a shampoo and the kitchen mugs were all stained. Not very appealing for the morning coffee. Also a very small television that did not show full picture. This is 2016 and televisions are not very expensive. While on holidays one does not watch a lot of TV but it is kind of nice to relax and watch a little television
In the evening without having to squint your eyes.
This was our third trip to the Big Island and we spent nearly three weeks at this Kona Makai unit. Everything was as described, everything worked well (Never tried the A/C - wonderful sea breezes made it not neccessary). The grounds are immaculate - pool good and lounging areas very nice. QUIET - maybe a little too much so for the small ones, but nice for us others who like listening to the waves breaking and not so much high music and noisy kids. Regarding the apartment, bedroom and bath were very nice. Kitchen had everything and everything worked ok - nice with the ice maker. We saw max 2 hours TV other than the super bowl :) worked good. Ceiling fans were really useful. Easy walking distance to Kona town. But everything was not perfect... The complex was completely full with vacationers when we were there (feb.) and it took its toll on the wifi accessability. There were periods in the day, especially around breakfast time and after dinner, when it was almost impossible to log on, and VERY SLOW. We had 5 gadgets which were trying to get on the net - you can imagine if all units were so. It demands a lot of bredband -but thats the way it is nowadays - Needs more capacity. The only thing we really disliked was the carpet especially in the living room. Really needs to be changed out - kind of ruins the first impression. But as I wrote in the top Remember what you are getting for the price! Maybe there is a better value oceanfront unit on the Big Island for the price - but I havent's seen it! Thanks again Sandra for letting us use your condo for our winter vacation.
And yes Sundowns form the lanai, spinner whales right off the end of the terrace, lots of whales (a little farther north) turtles... beautiful tropical fish and oh! Magic Sands Beach was gone! But it will be back again.
