Garfagnana area:: Forrest and hills, rivers and lakes, picturesque towns and villages full of old but living tradition – all that the Garfagnana will offer us in abundance. A hideaway for the stressed manager, an adventure for those who seek relaxation and want to discover the natural beauty of this part of the province. Here you will find another kind of tourism; not just nature has remained genuine but also the people who live here. Traditions are kept alive, the charm lies more in the simple things of life. The nature is breathtakingly beautiful, luxuriant and never ending in its variety. Extended walks, mountain bike tours and horseback tracking are probably the best known activities. The menu is highly dictated by the seasons, chestnut flower and all its products, but spelt is used as well. Meat comes from local and natural farms. Fish is taken from the many lakes and rivers. The rich forests offer deer and mushrooms. Most famous dishes are “Castagnaccio”, a kind of polenta made of chestnut flower.

... and “Minestrone di Farro” which is a soup made of spelt. Known world wide is the quality of the Garfagnana ceps (funghi porcini) growing on the hilly forests slopes in September and October, with the manifold options and recipes to prepare them. A great part of the Garfagnana is a natural reserve, there is almost no industry and life seems to stand still. Who is mentally in a hurry will probably never find his way to this small “paradise”. In the middle ages, however, the transit routes from Northern Italy to the South came through the Garfagnana and the Serchio valley; as the coast roads were full of malaria they preferred this certainly more tiring but safer way. For our days this route is somewhat too slow. The geological structure of the area has prevented from building fast roads, traffic flows rather slowly and calmly. Distances are short in our modern terms, but many hills have to be crossed. Rivers curve through valleys and we have to follow their bends.

About Corsagna:: The village is located about 400 meters above sea level north-west slopes of the plateau Pizzorne. With its 704 inhabitants is one of the most populated villages of the municipality of Borgo a Mozzano. The earliest historical record dates back to 768; dominate the first Suffredinghi and later the Republic of Lucca. The country was well known for its factories iron. The courts are a typical feature original of this country and are an expression of urban households most important. The place called 'Castle' is dominated by an imposing tower, bell tower today, and a vast square that dominates the Middle Serchio Valley, where there are two ambassadors and the parish church dedicated to San Michele (1506). L 'three-nave interior has stone columns with capitals originating in one door' s arms in the country (a snake that wraps itself in a column) and the Republic of Lucca. There are notable paintings (the Circumcision of Alessandro Frediani, seventeenth century, a San Michele School of Perugia...

Fantastic week end!!

  • 5 of 5

This is beautiful, spacious, well maintained old farmhouse with fantastic views over Corsagna ( the small village ) and the Serchio's river valley.

The singing of birds and the rustle of the trees will accompany you during the days.Ideal place if you are going to take a break away from all. The restaurant in the village is great with typical dishes. Top price.

Thanks Daniel for everything especially for the top breakfast offered the day after our arrival :)) Cornetti were super!!!!

Wonderful home base for our Italy trip

  • 5 of 5

I visited with a group of 4 couples in March 2016. We really appreciated that each floor had its own kitchen areas, but really enjoyed the common area downstairs. The beds/showers were all quite adequate and the area was clean and ready to go.

One small issue, which likely will have been corrected, was that one of the couches in the common area was broken so that the back kept falling off making it unusable.

The views here were amazing, even though we were present before the spring really came into bloom. We did not get to use the pool because of the time of year, but it looked like it would have been great.

The wifi worked fine, but is located on the top floor and sometimes doesn't reach the bottom would be a good idea to move the wifi router to the middle floor if possible.

In addition to the great views and history, it was cool to stay in the quaint little town of Corsagna. It was also a great location as we were able to visit Pisa, Lucca, Montecantini, Florence and Rome from this location (although Rome was a long day because of the drive to/from).

We would definitely stay here again as we enjoyed it tremendously and the price was great.

Great memories

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the house for two weeks during the second half of June 2015. The house is as described. We were a group of six adults and two children. The house fit as perfectly. Two of our couples stayed in the top level of the house, which had two bedrooms, full bath and a kitchen. The family with kids stayed on the second level that also had two bedrooms, bath and kitchen. The lower level is a huge hall where we could all have dinners together and just hang out. There is a kitchen and bath on that level, as well. All levels have separate entrances so you could have your privacy when needed.

The property provides utmost privacy as it sits on a hill with no neighbours around. The views of the mountains are beyond phenomenal. We were also lucky to see a firefly show every night in our garden.

There is a bit of drive up the hill (winding) but you’ll get used to it plus without that drive you wouldn’t get the amazing views and the air must be unique there as we all slept like babies.

The location is great for nice day trips. We did Pisa, Marina Di Vecchiano (beach), Florence, Lucca, Barga, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, San Miniato (truffles), Montacatini Terme and Montecatini Alti, Bagni Di Lucca and Grotta del Vento. All within a short driving distance and well worth a visit.

We had two dinners at the house (outdoor) made by our hosts Daniele and Diana. One was with meat and the other with seafood. They are so worth a try. We still look at the pictures and can taste the food. They are really great chefs and we have amazing memories from those nights.

Now for our host Daniele. He was always available. Met us in Lucca just off the highway and guided us to the house. Thank you so much Daniele and Diana. It was a pleasure meeting you and spending some time with you during our dinners.

Mile grazie!

Lovely scenery in between the mountains

  • 5 of 5

I was in Daniele's house, located in Corsagna, Borgo a Mozzano, Lucca, last summer with my family and with some friends of us. The idea was staying for 1 week, but in the end we stayed 2 weeks because we all liked the place: lovely scenery in between the montains, easy to reach and not far from the main town, Lucca (30 minutes maximum). The house is really confortable, very typical, built in local stone and wood, with a nice swimming pool where our children could safely swim and play all around, without us getting so stressed about.

Daniele and his crew are really nice people, they really cared about our staying showing us all their availability.

Twice we asked them to cook something local and typical for us and both dinner were really delicious.

I really hope to be able to take my family again soon and I'd suggest to everyone to spend some days over there, with family or with friends.

Nothing less than amazing

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of spending one week at the house this summer, which was a fantastic opportunity to experience toscany. The house more than met out expectations, and Daniele was a terrific host - easy to stay in touch with and helpful will our questions. We have already recommended this place to friends!

An Authentic Taste of Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

The property is accurately represented and pictured and the house and grounds were spotless. Apple, peach, pear, olive, grapes, and roses are in profusion. Great care has been taken in the restoration of this home and we appreciated the craftsmanship, especially the stone and wood work.

We could not have asked for more from the host, Daniele. He is sincere, knowledgeable, and warm and his assistance to us extended beyond what you would expect from a host.

The village of Corsagna is a delight. The piazza, church, architecture, and the Bar Braduzzi are quintessential Tuscany. We found the people warm and helpful even though our Italian is spotty. (If language is an issue for you, ask to speak to Gabriella. She lives on the piazza and is a delight).

Some might find the drive up from Borgo to be a negative, but just take your time and pay attention. After a few trips you will become comfortable.

This location was perfect for what we wanted to accomplish. We had easy day trips to Florence, Lucca, Volterra, Pisa, Castelnuovo de Garfagnana, Barga, Carrara, and Cinque Terra and it was nice to "take a day off" and stay by the pool.

Borgo a Mozzano is 12 minutes away at the bottom of the hill. They have a wonderful grocery store and Macelli's became one of our favorite places for dinner. There is also wonderful dining at Bagni di Luca which is another 10 minutes away.

If you are looking for a fast paced "American style" vacation this might not be the place for you. However, if you want to slow yourself to the Tuscany pace, experience a truly unique part of the world, and get to know warm, genuine people you will love this property. We have recommended this to your friends and we hope to return in a few years.
