Why Machiko Heyde chose Haiku-Pauwela
When we moved to Maui over 30 years ago, we immediately fell in love with the Upcountry area more than any other parts of Maui. We purchased this property because of the desirable location and setting. The main house and the guest cottage are perfectly separated from each other, so our guests have their own privacy. We fully renovated and furnished the cottage for our guests travelers. Thanks to our many returning guests, we have been comfortably busy over the past 20 years.
What makes this Cottage unique
This is a perfect location to explore the entire island of Maui. Having its own private driveway, hidden from the public road and the forest on one side of the property creates a unique, hidden hideaway to relax. Quiet, yet very convenient to stores & restaurants. But when you just want to let go of Maui's splendor and relax for the day, this cottage on this property is ideal. A collection of books, DVDs & CDs are also provided to keep you company.

We enjoyed the country type setting and quiet, beautiful surroundings. We found everything we needed in the kitchen. It is small, but just fine for us. Also, centrally located to get anywhere on the east part of the island. The owners are very accomodating and helpful.
Little paradise in paradise
One of the most beautiful guesthouses I've stayed in. Great location, away from the hustle of the touristic part of Maui, yet conveniently close to interesting places, airport and shops. The hospitality of the hosts is great and the inventory is very complete. Definitely my first choice next time I visit Maui.
Very nice place and people. They have thought of all the things you will need to have a great stay
Super accommodating hosts. Cottage is so well supplied and clean. Lovely
Perfect in Every Way
For us, this was the perfect getaway. The location was excellent. Up country and within easy distance of so many lovely, artsy towns. And just a bit longer to the north coast and its breathtaking views. The cottage itself is updated, very bright and airy, with luxurious towels and linens (on the cozy queen sized bed.) Plenty of places to sit comfortably for sharing a meal or to sit and read. The two lanais offered a great view of the beautifully landscaped large yard.
Nothing was left to chance, plenty of utensils and glassware, coffee and cream, fresh fruits, lovely lotions in the bath, all the USB plugins we required. They supplied blankets to help keep us warm seeing a Haleakala sunrise and guide books for the Road to Hana. Fans and a heaters; washer and dryer. Coolers and icepacks and umbrellas. Even a basket of socks for our use!
Thank you Machiko and Bill for your hospitality. Everything is so thought out, with nothing left to chance. We felt very well cared for from the time we made our reservation all the way through our too-short stay. Looking forward to meeting you again!
Beautiful place! Everything we needed!
This place is awesome! We stayed in Makawao, away from the hustle and bustle of tourists and got a real glimpse of Maui! The house had everything, and more than we needed! Thank you so much for sharing your space!!! We hope to return!
Convenient to visit Haleakala National Park and the scenic day trip to Hana. Some of the other Upcountry attractions include art galleries in Makawao and Paia, hiking trails, ziplines, Surfing Goat Dairy, Botanical gardens, Lavender Farm, downhill bicycling, winery, paragliding and eco-farm tours.
