Spacious one-bedroom Cottage on two acre property
Lonely Planet 'Discover Maui', Top Choice in Haiku, described as 'Pilialoha blends countryside charm with all the comforts of a home away from home. The sunny split-level cottage has one pretty setting, nestled in a eucalyptus grove. Everything inside is pretty, too. But it is the warm hospitality and attention to detail that shine brightest.'
Romantic free-standing spacious one-bedroom cottage, perfect for two people. Living/Dining room with a fully equipped kitchen, with complimentary coffees & teas.
The bedroom is split-level, with the upper level containing a dressing area leading to the bathroom with a shower/tub combination. The step-down bedroom has a queen size bed and a private lanai. The location is very convenient to explore all parts of Maui from here. Many of our guests have expressed how they look forward to coming back to the cottage to relax each evening after their daily activities.

Machiko Heyde purchased this cottage in 1988
When we moved to Maui over 30 years ago, we immediately fell in love with the Upcountry area more than any other parts of Maui. We purchased this property because of the desirable location and setting. The main house and the guest cottage are perfectly separated from each other, so our guests have their own privacy. We fully renovated and furnished the cottage for our guests travelers. Thanks to our many returning guests, we have been comfortably busy over the past 20 years.
This is a perfect location to explore the entire island of Maui. Having its own private driveway, hidden from the public road and the forest on one side of the property creates a unique, hidden hideaway to relax. Quiet, yet very convenient to stores & restaurants. But when you just want to let go of Maui's splendor and relax for the day, this cottage on this property is ideal. A collection of books, DVDs & CDs are also provided to keep you company.
Pilialoha Cottage was the perfect getaway. My husband and I were looking for a quiet retreat while exploring Maui. And we were fortunate to locate just what we needed. This cottage was perfect. The location was very quiet, the cottage was well maintained, very clean, and had all the amenities we needed. We would most definitely recommend Pilialoha Cottage. If we had stayed somewhere along the beach, we might not have had an opportunity to explore the inland. Maui has so much to offer and using Pilialoha Cottage as a beginning point allowed us to experience wonderful scenic drives each day. It was a great vacation.
Our stay at the Pilialoha Cottage was perfect. We are not ones to love the trendy beach environment, so this cottage in the country was a perfect fit. It was quiet, clean, and most enjoyable. In the country of central Maui, we were close to Haleakala National Park, the beaches of the west cost, the start of the road to Hana...perfect location. Having the kitchen allowed for a fantastic breakfast (the fresh eggs were great!); there was fruit and a choice of cereals. The coffee was easy to make...juice was in the refrigerator. The dishes/pots and pans were very nice.
WiFi was available with use of a password. There was no Air Conditioning, but it was not needed in September...a nice ceiling fan is in the living room. We did not spend much time in the day there (we were out and about), but would love loved to spend more time on the back patio and yard - it was beautiful. Chickens were visiting in the morning.
There was a washer and dryer which was nice on our last night. There are stairs to get to the bedroom - so someone with mobility issues/accessibility would want to be aware of this. Coolers, beach bag, beach chairs, boogie boards...you name it - they were very mindful of items the average traveler might need (even some fleece jackets for the higher elevations of Haleakala).
Machiko & Bill take very good care of their property and care much about their travelers. My husband and I decided that when we return to Maui, we would definitely look to stay at Pilialoha Cottage again!
The cottage has everything you would ever need for a perfect stay from beach gear, cooking supplies and house amenities. The hosts greet you with fresh fruit, milk, cereal, orange juice, coffee etc..... The patio is a perfect place to enjoy the green tropical plants of this side of the island. The evening were peaceful, quiet surroundings and with a nice breeze. There is nothing we would change about this cottage and it's location. There are lots of rules put on these folks but it feels like a family visit. We used the washer and drier.
From our first contact with Bill and Machiko, I knew our 3 day stay would be a pleasant one. It started with the property description, photos and reviews that I kept going back to when I first sourced a vacation rental in this part of Maui. Our plans for our short stay was primarily to see the sunrise at Haleakala and do the drive to Hana. This seemed like the perfect location...and it was! Bill and Machiko thought of everything for this lovely 1 bdrm cottage, that we needed nothing while we were there. They reside nearby so met us upon our arrival from airport to show us around the house and property, so no guessing when we got there. The weather did not really cooperate as Maui had a lot of rain for over a week. But, that made for very relaxing nights and mornings up in the Haiku area. We had never been up there and now that we have, albeit rainy for the whole time until our departure, we will definitely return. We have stayed in Kihei before and really like that part but we think the Upcountry is better!! This cottage looks down on a long sweeping lawn leading down to another property with a resident goat and cow. We loved it when the goat came up to the fence and said hello! Unfortunately we couldn't do Haleakala or the drive to Hana over the 2 full days we had there because of the rain. Next time. Instead we visited all the little Upcountry towns and found them to be the true Hawaii that we love - Makawao, Haiku, Pa'ia and Kula. We are so happy we ventured to these little towns and highly recommend visitors to do the same. It's also just a half hour drive over to Makena Beach and Wailua, areas we already were familiar with and spend a lovely warm and sunny day on that part of Maui. The Pilialoha Cottage has become our favourite vacation rental so far. We really enjoyed listening to the selection of Hawaiian music CD's that are in the cottage and the thoughtful flowers and welcome fruit, milk and a bowl of eggs from the neighbour. Mahalo Nui Loa Bill and Machiko!! Carol and Charles, from St. Louis.
What a wonderful home to return to after a full day. Pilialoha has a sense of peace. The house is located away from all the heavy traffic nut is really central to most activities on Maui. The house is spotless and was extremely well equipped. I loved the library. I could have read for 2 weeks. The converted garage/laundry room/mud room was a wonderful entry and gathering space. The fresh flowers were a treat. Machiko and Bill were thoughtful and helpful. We would stay again. And thanks Bill for inspiring us w solar!!
We had a great experience staying here. Not only are Machiko and Bill gracious hosts that make you feel at home, the cottage in every way lived up to our expectations as described in the VRBO listing. If you are looking for something away from the crowds, condos and resorts, then this place should be high on your list. The cottage is clean, comfortable, nicely furnished, has plenty of room and a nice lanai with chairs and views of the property. The kitchen is well equipped, there were fresh flowers on arrival as well as fresh fruit, muffins, eggs and orange juice. The cottage also had everything you might need for a day at the beach including chairs, snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach towels, coolers, etc. The location is quiet and peaceful yet very close to many places that might be of interest. It is less than a 5 minute drive to Makawao (check out live music at Cassonova) and less than 15 minutes to Paia. The Upcountry area is easily accessible and maybe 30 or 40 minutes to reach great snorkeling around Wailea. Grocery needs are close too. Machiko and Bill are most helpful, gracious and available. We would love to come back and stay here again!
Convenient to visit Haleakala National Park and the scenic day trip to Hana. Some of the other Upcountry attractions include art galleries in Makawao and Paia, hiking trails, ziplines, Surfing Goat Dairy, Botanical gardens, Lavender Farm, downhill bicycling, winery, paragliding and eco-farm tours.
