Lonely Planet 'Discover Maui', Top Choice in Haiku, described as 'Pilialoha blends countryside charm with all the comforts of a home away from home. The sunny split-level cottage has one pretty setting, nestled in a eucalyptus grove. Everything inside is pretty, too. But it is the warm hospitality and attention to detail that shine brightest.'

The bedroom is split-level, with the upper level containing a dressing area leading to the bathroom with a shower/tub combination. The step-down bedroom has a queen size bed and a private lanai. Machiko Heyde purchased this cottage in 1988
When we moved to Maui over 30 years ago, we immediately fell in love with the Upcountry area more than any other parts of Maui. We purchased this property because of the desirable location and setting. The main house and the guest cottage are perfectly separated from each other, so our guests have their own privacy. We fully renovated and furnished the cottage for our guests travelers. Thanks to our many returning guests, we have been comfortably busy over the past 20 years.
This is a perfect location to explore the entire island of Maui. Having its own private driveway, hidden from the public road and the forest on one side of the property creates a unique, hidden hideaway to relax. Quiet, yet very convenient to stores & restaurants. But when you just want to let go of Maui's splendor and relax for the day, this cottage on this property is ideal. A collection of books, DVDs & CDs are also provided to keep you company.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pilialoha Cottage! Machiko and Bill graciously greeted us upon arrival and showed us the amenities within our cottage and answered our questions about the area. Everything and more that we could imagine was offered to us. Fruit and baked goods along with fresh eggs etc were wonderful as we hadn't purchased groceries until the following day. The cottage was impeccably up kept and the property was breathtaking! Nina the neighbouring cow would come to us when we called her at the fence line :). Location was wonderful as we explored many places up country. Makawao is only a few minutes drive for eateries, shopping, fuel and such. Altogether a superb home away from home as the owners take pride hosting their guests.
Our stay was amazing! Bill and Machico were ideal hosts. They anticipated our every possible need and provided all the equipment and information necessary for a most enjoyable stay. The cottage was more than adequate nestled in such a beautiful, serene setting. It's location is readily available to many interesting sites all the way from Hana to past Makena beach. We will highly recommend Pilialoha to all of or friends,!! Hub and Marge Proulx, Barrie, Ontario, Canada.
The cottage was perfect.
From initial booking to departure, the experience was a real joy.
The cottage was exactly how it was described.
The location of the cottage lends itself well to all of Maui's best activities.
I would highly recommend to anyone.
These folks have thought of EVERYTHING for your stay that you could possibly need. There is a full size fridge stocked with juice , fruit, eggs and butter There is a varied selection of coffees and teas as well as cream, milk and sugar. Non coin laundry available in the cottage with detergent and fabric softener supplied. There are beach towels, beach toys snorkeling equipment as well as sun screen and after sun lotions for your use. There are picnic coolers, jackets if you choose to see the sunrise at the top of the mountain. So many comforts of home to mention. We had a restful, enjoyable time while we stayed at this gem of a cottage. I wish I was related to Bill and Machiko so we could stay there all the time. Go and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Loved their selection of books as well. Read "Growing up Barefoot in Hawaii" while we were there. THAT was a good read.
Pilialoha Cottage was the perfect getaway. My husband and I were looking for a quiet retreat while exploring Maui. And we were fortunate to locate just what we needed. This cottage was perfect. The location was very quiet, the cottage was well maintained, very clean, and had all the amenities we needed. We would most definitely recommend Pilialoha Cottage. If we had stayed somewhere along the beach, we might not have had an opportunity to explore the inland. Maui has so much to offer and using Pilialoha Cottage as a beginning point allowed us to experience wonderful scenic drives each day. It was a great vacation.
Our stay at the Pilialoha Cottage was perfect. We are not ones to love the trendy beach environment, so this cottage in the country was a perfect fit. It was quiet, clean, and most enjoyable. In the country of central Maui, we were close to Haleakala National Park, the beaches of the west cost, the start of the road to Hana...perfect location. Having the kitchen allowed for a fantastic breakfast (the fresh eggs were great!); there was fruit and a choice of cereals. The coffee was easy to make...juice was in the refrigerator. The dishes/pots and pans were very nice.
WiFi was available with use of a password. There was no Air Conditioning, but it was not needed in September...a nice ceiling fan is in the living room. We did not spend much time in the day there (we were out and about), but would love loved to spend more time on the back patio and yard - it was beautiful. Chickens were visiting in the morning.
There was a washer and dryer which was nice on our last night. There are stairs to get to the bedroom - so someone with mobility issues/accessibility would want to be aware of this. Coolers, beach bag, beach chairs, boogie boards...you name it - they were very mindful of items the average traveler might need (even some fleece jackets for the higher elevations of Haleakala).
Machiko & Bill take very good care of their property and care much about their travelers. My husband and I decided that when we return to Maui, we would definitely look to stay at Pilialoha Cottage again!
