About Bryan & Gina

Bryan & Gina Bortnem

Bryan & Gina purchased this house in 2017

Why Bryan & Gina chose Duluth

We began making regular visits to Duluth years ago and fell in love with the landscape, city and all there is to do here - from hiking, sailing, camping and skiing to simply enjoying the sounds of the waves and ships. Our kids fell in love with Duluth on our many adventures here over the years as well and now attend UMD. We knew that someday we would have to eventually call this place home. While maintaining our current home and this home in Duluth we are finally making it happen.

What makes this house unique

When staying at A Charles Weiss Home, the original woodwork throughout the home, along with the antique furniture and decor give you a sense that you have been transported back in time. If you have an old soul, this place is for you!

Really nice turn of the century home

  • 5 of 5

Our group came up for the Northland Invitational GolfTournament and had a great time at the house. The porch is a wonderful spot to gather and visit after golf and dinner.

New Year Stay

  • 3 of 5

It was a busy time as we were in Duluth for a Granddaughters Wedding. We mainly needed the bedrooms and the showers. The front steps were not shoveled. Being 79 years old, I felt uncomfortable going up and down them for fear of falling-the railing was not much help. The use of those tub showers were next to impossible. Otherwise we were comfortable. Could have used a little bit later check-out-as we had been up quite late for the wedding, and it was New Years Eve.

Very Victorian Christmas

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time at this home. The dining room seats 8 and I think that's about the perfect number for sharing this house. We were a group of 5 and had plenty of room to spread out, but were able to enjoy Christmas dinner together and open gifts in the library. We played a lot of billiards and spent time together. It's close to canal park and "Bentlyville" during the holidays. So we shopped and had dinner out without having very far to go at all. It would be far more walkable in pleasant weather (We had a bit of an ice storm while there.) One daughter said it would be perfect for "Downton Abby" fans. There's an extra lamp in the billiards room, but the outlet was a bit spotty and the prongs had to be twisted a little to get it to work, but this is an old home. The billiards room and the library are a bit dim, but certainly not unusable. This is an old Victorian and we kind of felt that was part of the romance of it. The beds were comfortable and the rooms warm on a very blustery night. We split up into 3 bedrooms and so we all had our own bathrooms. Although the master bedroom with the sitting room and fireplace doesn't have it's own bath, you have to go down the hall, but it was worth it to the couple who took that room. The kitchen has all the dishes, pans, pots and utensils you could need, but if you wish more than salt and pepper, bring your own spices. (We always do anyway.) The dishwasher was very difficult to close and took 3 of us to finally get it shut, but it did function. We too, would have liked one more hour of check-out time to get everything in order before we left, but managed to pull together and leave on time. All in all we had a very lovely Christmas here and it will remain one of our most memorable ones.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the lovely review. We love to hear from our guests. We do try to accommodate early/late check out requests provided that we do not have a new arrival coming in. We are so happy that you enjoyed our wonderful city, braving our sometimes very unpredictable weather. It has been a cold, icy holiday season. Thanks again!!!

Charming, Comfortable, and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

What a great house!!! Spacious and cozy at the same time. The kitchen was adequate to easily prepare food for 10 people. Everything we needed was provided. Plenty of privacy and also plenty of space to play games, hang out, dance, whatever!! Conveniently located so close to anything you'd want to do in town and two blocks from a grocery store. Owners are very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be back!!!

Somewhat disappointed...

  • 3 of 5

While communications with the owners prior to our stay were very good, now that our visit concluded (it's been over 2 weeks), we've not gotten our damage deposit back, nor are they answering our email requests explaining why or when that will take place. We alerted them to a broken toilet handle as soon as it was discovered on our first day, so as not to be held accountable for it, and we left the home much cleaner than we found it. We were out at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday morning. Every dish was cleaned and put away, dishwasher empty, the floors swept, rugs shaken, garbage taken out, beds made...

The home is beautifully furnished, but poorly lighted. There were prior comments about lighting, but even some of the floor lamps that were there and closet lights had no light bulbs. ?? The pool table room was basically unusable for most of our stay.

We appreciated them letting us get in early our first day just to drop off our bags and coolers, then we left again. We were initially locked out but they quickly arrived to let us in. We did have to shop for paper products. There was 1 sheet of paper towel on the roll left out in the kitchen, and we needed to buy more TP. Also, the neighbors had a party Saturday night that went until 2:30 am and was clearly heard from 2 of the bedrooms. Just something to consider if you have any light sleepers. Again, it was a lovely home and beautifully furnished, but if it were mine, I'd put the money into making the stay more function-able for the guests. The house is broken up into many smaller rooms, as they did back when this was built, but no one room would accommodate our group of 10 at any one time. Beds were very comfortable. Location is nice, and off street parking is nice. The 10 a.m. checkout time is really early, considering all the work that needed to be done to be out in time, so our 'weekend' in Duluth was really cut short. And much of Saturday night was spent preparing to be out early the next morning that it really had more of an affect than we'd anticipated. Soooo many rules in place, we all felt a little on edge all weekend. Not sure I'd stay again. And now with a less than glowing review, I'm guessing we'll not see our deposit back, so what seemed like a good value may not be so after all.

Owner's Response: Hello Leanne, Thank you for staying with us. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed in your stay with us but your review has little to do with your damage deposit refund. You did receive your full deposit. As for the neighbors, we wish that we would have known as we would have addressed it immediately had we been made aware. The city has a strict noise ordinance and we could have shut it down. The rooms are original to the home and there is little that we can do to the room sizes without changing the homes historic architecture. The dining room table seats 8 as-is, with two additional chairs in the room. Additional light bulbs are supplied under the kitchen sink and we would have directed you and your guests to their location had we been made aware that there were any lamps with burned out bulbs. We do not stock paper towels and there is a short list of suggested items to bring in the "pre-vacation letter" that is sent out prior to your stay. Every one of the 5 second story bathrooms is stocked with 2 toilet paper rolls each and the main floor half bath is stocked with 5 rolls per short stay (I see that your group stayed for 2 days). We thank you so much for the condition that the home was left in; "We were out at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday morning. Every dish was cleaned and put away, dishwasher empty, the floors swept, rugs shaken, garbage taken out, beds made." You went above and beyond! We ask only that the garbages be removed and the dishwasher loaded and started. It is not necessary to put away dishes, sweep floors/shake rugs, or make beds as they will need to be stripped and laundered. We do welcome suggestions for our home and thank you for your review and for staying with us!!

Daily shows have divers interacting and feeding fish in a giant water tank. There are more than 70 different species of fish, amphibians, mammals and birds housed at the aquarium.

Duluth has a rich cultural heritage and there are many museums, historic homes and estates that are open for public viewing. Historic railway tours make for a fun excursion for the whole family. Learn about the early pioneers, the history of the region, and enjoy the spectacular scenery. There is also an opportunity to spot birds and wildlife in the forest.

In the wintertime, the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area has 22 ski runs, a super pipe for snowboarders, and 22 miles of cross country skiing. A perfect place for both beginner and advanced skiers, the ski runs and lifts are well maintained and the resort is said to have some of the best skiing of the region.
