Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and experience the Aloha of Hawaii Island while staying at this gorgeous, hand crafted home near Volcano Golf Course & Country Club. Nestled amongst the native Koa and Ohia Lehua Trees with a sweeping view of Mauna Loa and a steady serenade from the numerous native birds, this Hawaiian retreat will envelope you with a complete sense of peace and relaxation. Hale Ka Lehua was designed by owners John & Mindi Clark and personally built by John which shows in every well thought out detail.
The extensive use of glass gives one the feeling of being outside while within the warm comfort of indoors...perhaps snuggled next to the wood burning fireplace.
This 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath retreat has a completely private master bedroom located outside of the main home off of the front lanai. This sweet room has a full sized memory foam bed with a native garden view, 1/2 bath, night stand, reading lights over the bed and a small space heater for extra chilly winter nights.
The main floor bedroom has a queen memory foam bed, a small desk and closet and is located across the hall from the full bath (both Tub & shower).
The upstairs 'room with a view'' is a multi-purpose room with a full size Futon sofa bed (a real matress not a cotton one along with a memory foam mattress pad topper) that can be used as a reading or game room, a bedroom or a perfect place to practice Yoga, meditate or simply have some quiet time enjoying the full, mountain view of Mauna Loa through Frank Lloyd Wright inspired seamless corner windows.
The kitchen boasts gorgeous 'Flower Garden' granite, gas stove and oven and is completely stocked with Le Creuset cookware, small appliances and Riedel wine glasses.
French doors spill out from the solid ohia wood floored living & dining room onto the wrap around lanai that has outside dining and gas BBQ grill as well.
We invite you to come enjoy the beauty and quietude of this beautiful brand new home while exploring the amazing dynamics of Kilauea, the world's most active volcano located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The 'Dry side' of Volcano keeps you out out of what can be a constant drizzle & fog that shrouds the eastern flank. The golf course area is located just beyond the crest of 4,000' and dips you into the Kau side of Volcano where the temps will still range from the 40's to the mid 70's but with far more sun! We are 3 miles past the entrance to the park, but you can walk to the edge of the caldera from our home in just 20 minutes...a perfect place to sip a glass of wine while soaking in the view of Halema'uma'u and getting a glimpse of the powers of Madame Pele.
Both the Volcano Golf Course and Volcano Winery are within a few minutes walk from the house.
We moved to the Hawaiian village of Kalapana located on the SE corner of the Big Island in 1981 to escape the freeways of So. California. We were blessed to live, surf and paddle canoe here for 8 years before Madame Pele covered this community with lava in the late 80's & early 90's. We lost our home to the lava but our orchid farm,'Kalapana Tropicals' that we started in 1987 remains in tact and is now just one of 2 orchid nurseries that we own and operate...the other being in Kurtistown where we have lived since 1990. Free orchid farm tours for our guests!
Melinda Clark purchased this cabin in 2009
We love the Volcano area for it's cool weather, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and hiking and cycling opportunities. It's a quick get-a-way for us as it is only 20 minutes from our home in Kurtistown and we feel like we are in another world!
We selected this property because it is located on the 'dry side' of Volcano, it's bounty of native Koa and Ohia trees that are filled with birds. John took great care in removing only enough trees to build and the home is designed with a bedroom off the lanai to save trees and give this home a tree house feel.
We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful house. The construction and design of this house is so artfully done and it sits on such a beautiful heavily forested lot. We appreciate the owners sharing their home with us and we will definitely be suggesting it to friends and family as they plan visits to this side of the island.
the House is beautiful, the open floor plan and wraparound porch to the large deck area make it easy to want to spend time indoors and out. The hot tub was awesome for relaxing after golf on those cool and comfortable nights. The owners are easily and readily available should you delete your arrival letter with garage door code.... and realize the error of your ways when trying to open the garage door! 😀I would stay here again!
By the title, I mean that the quality of the house and furnishings clearly indicates that this is somebody's vacation home and not merely rental property intended to generate income. The floors are as beautiful as shown in the photos. Le Creuset cookware, sharp(!) good quality knives, even a tetsubin: items that make cooking a pleasure but could also be ruined by abuse. Curiously, no dishwasher. The cottage out back had special privacy. The washer/drier are extra large - important for our family of six.
And there's the only rub. The six of us were kinda pushing the home's capacity. There's only one shower. It's spacious and beautifully tiled but singular. The bed situation was a bit sketchy. The upstairs bed has both foot and head boards. Tall people have to sleep diagonally, which limits this bed to a single tall (say, >6'2") person. We rigged up the sofa, ottoman and armchair to be quite comfortable for our 18 year old, but older backs may be more sensitive.
No need to mention the location on the sunny side and that we were lucky enough to get right up to flowing lava.
We'd definitely stay here, again. Hence the 5 stars. But thought it worthwhile to mention the limitations at full occupancy. Yea, for tall folks. Not sure how the owners could write this into their description, so I'm not at all claiming that there was any deception.
We had a wonderful stay at this property. Melinda was very accommodating and the property was just as beautiful in person as in the pictures on the website. The location was ideal. I would highly recommend this home.
This beautiful home has all the touches that one needs for a short or long stay on the southeast side of the Big Island. It's like staying in a close friend's perfectly furnished second home. So close to Volcano National Park that we went several times (don't miss seeing the volcano at night!). But the home is also close to Hilo, the black sand beach at Punalu'u, Pahoa and all the sights at the far eastern tip of the island. I would happily stay here again and would recommend the house to anyone wishing to spend a little time on the SE side.
The Big Island is really...Big! Spend less time driving and more time having fun: It would be easy to spend lots of time driving from one side to the other several times over the course of a trip. I split my time between Volcano and the Kona coast and would recommend the same to anyone wanting to enjoy more time sightseeing and less time driving. Aloha!
It was a lovely place. The kids where sleeping in a separate little house. Unfortunately the tropical storm Darby went by with rainy days, thats why we could only use the balcony once. The house is standing in the rain forest.
We loved to stay so close to the Volcanic National Park.
Very very nice place to stay.
We are 3 miles past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, just past the Volcano Golf Course which is located on Pi'imauna Drive (1st Right past the 4,000 elevation marker on Highway 11). We are a 20 minute walk to the edge of Kilauea Caldera (from the house),10 minute walk to the golf course & a 5 minute walk to the winery. Lots of hiking trails, cycling, exploring the National Park and lava viewing.
You may also park at the entrance of our subdivision at the corner of Pi'imauna and the highway and access the park or the shopping facilities within the Kilauea Military camp. From here the walk to the caldera is less than 10 minutes. Access the hiking trails across from the flag pole at Kilauea Military Camp ...aka KMC.
We have 2 bikes for your enjoyment as well.
