Castelnuovo Berardenga Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Arco al Poggio, 2 bedroom apartment, exclusive porch and garden, swimming pool

Set into the beautiful Chianti hills of Villa Arceno, a vast private estate and nature reserve, the apartment comprises three floors within a renovated traditional Tuscan farmhouse split into three properties.

Exclusively private large airy apartment and covered patio with postcard views facing south over the Chianti countryside. Two large comfortable 'Tuscan' double bedrooms with ceiling fans. Each with separate bathrooms. True Tuscan 'essence' with all modern conveniences, internet access, Wi-Fi, T.V. DVD player and iPod dock. Furnished to the highest standards with local antiques and designs the apartment accommodates comfortably four persons to give a unique and very stylish, comfortable experience, a true 'home from home'. A large and comfortable dining area seating eight and an excellently appointed kitchen for keen or even 'professional' cooks!

Accessed by its own entrance at ground level from a secluded private garden into a small courtyard leading to a porch which also houses a wood fired oven. A stairway leads up to a private covered patio 'the Loggia' with exclusive use for 'al fresco' dining seating six. The apartment is accessed directly from the Loggia into a spacious living area with fireplace and a dining area accommodating up to eight people and kitchen. At one end a bedroom and bathroom with shower, opposite, a stairway leads to a spacious and romantic master bedroom with beautiful views over the vineyards and the village of San Gusmè. A bathroom elegantly finished with a large bathtub and shower serves the master bedroom. Guests also have the use of a tranquil private swimming pool.

THE ESTATE OF VILLA ARCENO: The estate of Arceno covers 1000 hectares of forest, vineyards, olive groves, cypress avenues, dotted with traditional farmhouses “the Casali”, some of which are enigmatic, romantic ruins awaiting restoration.

The “Villa” (Manor House) of the estate dates from the 16th century along with its own chapel, a romantic park and lake. From the Villa the original owners would have managed the estate directing the farmhands and workers who once lived in the Casali with the livestock.

Il Poggio was once a working Casale but is now restored with modern benefits, it now houses those who wish to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Chianti countryside.

AROUNDABOUTS: From Il Poggio there are views towards the famous Crete, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and beyond towards Monte Amiata. To the rear of the Casale lies the medieval walled village of San Gusmè, a short 15 minute walk through the vines where, if one pleases may have a drink at the village café and admire panoramic views in almost all directions to Siena and its Torre del Mangia.

All areas of the estate are reached by “strade bianche”, literally “white roads” which are unpaved. Although used by the public these roads are quiet, allowing walking, cycling and jogging at one’s own pace. The surrounding region is stuffed with history, art, food and wine. Siena, with its famous “Palio” an exciting adrenaline fuelled horse race (2nd July and 16th August) is only 15 minutes away. With Italy’s excellent road network, Florence, San Giminiano, le Crete, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona and Arezzo are with easy reach for day trips. In the other direction Umbria with Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio and Todi.

AMENITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT: Famous for food and wine there are many places to see and go to in order to discover the flavours of Chianti. One might be a passive or active participant, either eating and drinking the produce or by taking cooking or winery courses at source and making the resulting produce oneself. If one is the more active type, a diverting round of golf or horse riding might be the ticket. There are spas and the seaside to indulge in should relaxing there be preferred.

Packed full of history and art, an almost endless list of galleries, exhibitions, museums, churches, palaces and other diverse artisanal places are to be discovered.

About Anna Crawford

Anna and James, we are an Italian-Anglo couple who enjoy their lives between London, Milan and Tuscany. We have a busy life but also also love to have relaxing moments in Arceno where we find tranquillity after the buzzing of a big city. Love art, music, good food and even better wine.

Anna Crawford purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Anna Crawford chose Siena Area

Anna and James enjoy Arco al Poggio since 2004. It was love at first sight and the place has become our magic retreat and we love to share this with our Guests.

What makes this apartment unique

Arceno is a private estate where history, beautiful landscapes, vineyards, flora and wild animals make the place unique in the whole of Tuscany. Our house benefits from it all and living life here is a special treat due to the beauty and harmony of the place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Entering the Villa Arceno estate, you are immediately enveloped in a beautiful landscape of cypress lined hills, olive groves, vineyards and stone farmhouses, creating a perfect Tuscan scene. Il Poggio comes with a pretty garden, swimmng pool, and is elevated across two upper floors, giving outstanding views of the nearby village and the estate. The property is furnished to an excellent standard and offers every convenience for your stay. The large, private terrace is the most perfect setting to enjoy every meal and was saturated with almond blossom over Easter. Il Poggio is perfectly located to enjoy the amenities of nearby Castelnuovo Beradenga, which offers a good choice of local osterias and a local winery as well as a short drive to the historic towns Sienna and Florence, all manageable within a day. A perfect to relax and soak up the Italian sunshine, robust red wines and fabulous restaurants.

II Poggio - Idyllic

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned to the UK after two weeks in Italy. After touring in the first week, the second week spent at the II Poggio villa in Tuscany was idyllic. It was a great place to relax after spending time in the cities. It was a brilliant base from where to explore Tuscany.

The views from the balcony and all the windows around the house were stunning. It was exactly how we had pictured it and hoped it would be. The 10 minute walk from the villa through the vineyards to San Gusme under a clear blue sky was one of the highlights of our time in Italy. There was everything we needed in the villa, the welcome basket was a lovely gesture and asking us in advance what else we would need on arrival was really appreciated. The way the villa

is set out was excellent for the 4 of us staying there – with bedrooms / bathrooms on either side and a choice of whether

you wanted to be upstairs or downstairs. Vanessa talking us through how to use everything and leaving instructions was so helpful. The areas in the garden and around the shared pool area allowed us to relax in the sun through the day. We loved spending evenings relaxing on the balcony as the sun faded and sampling local wines, with some candles kindly provided to keep the mosquitoes at bay. We closed the door for the last time with heavy hearts – after a wonderful week in the heart of beautiful Tuscany. Thank you Anna and Vanessa.

Wonderful first holiday in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We will start by saying that even before we arrived here the friendliness and high levels of communication from Anna and Vanessa were exceptional. We had all the information we needed to get there, so we found the property easily. Anna and her team look after you very well.

The property itself is beautiful and is easily the best looked after apartment/villa we have rented over 25 years of family holidays. The attention to detail is first class. Whatever you think you might need from a holiday apartment, it's there. The apartment is large and as we were only 3 people we had lots of space. There are 2 very large bathrooms with really good showers, essential after a hot day out in the countryside.

The apartment is one of three in the property so there are other families around and the pool is shared but you do have your own allocated loungers/poolside area. Pool towels are also kindly provided.

The Arceno estate is very well situated in wonderful rolling Chianti countryside, any visitor will not be short of options for wine tasting with so many vineyards nearby.

Also nearby are many wonderful hilltop villages which we tended to explore in the mornings then come back for lunch on the patio before a cooling afternoon by the pool. Siena is also only 20 mins away by car so is easy for a day trip and more of a city experience. From Siena you can catch a train to Florence. Both cities are wonderful, if very hot compared to the Chianti hills which always seemed a few degrees cooler. We read a lot about "Chiantishire" before we left the UK and so we were a little concerned that it might be overrun by tourists but that is not the case at all in the area around the apartment.

Eating out options near the apartment are reasonably plentiful and range from Michelin star establishments to simple local cuisine. Castelnuovo Berardenga has several restaurants, we tried most of them and found the food to be pretty good with a good choice if not extensive menus. The restaurant hosts were in our experience very friendly. We would suggest that you book tables as occasionally places were full . The wine lists of course were fantastic! The other villages nearby all have at least one restaurant.

We have no hesitation in recommending this apartment for a family who wants to have a great location to explore the beauty of Tuscany.

Stunning setting outstanding accomodation.

  • 5 of 5

We have travelled in Italy many times and can safely say that this is the best accomodation we have ever had. Set in the stunning Arceno Vineyard this is simple an outstanding property and setting. The house was immaculately clean and has everything you could wish for in a holiday property. The pool is outstanding and although shared this was not an issue at all during our stay. This is a wonderful gem in the heart of Tuscany and one we would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Philip, you were fantastic guests, very enticed by the house and its settings and with a great sense of humour. No surprise you wrote such an outstanding review for which we thank you. We are only delighetd we could contribute to the success of your holidays. For next year we are planning on further enhancement of the property itself and on the step up of the "concierge" services we provide to our guests. So we shall be happy to welcome you back any time for an even more "stunning and outstanding" experience. Anna

Tuscan dream apartment!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic apartment and location! This was for us the ideal holiday location away from the madding crowds, nestled in the Tuscan hills, with amazing views from the private loggia which makes this apartment really unique. The apartment itself has everything you need, is comfortable and spacious and of course perfectly clean. Take a walk through the vineyards up the hill to the nearby hilltown of San Gusme, a jewel of a Tuscan village, or downhill through the olive groves. The nearby town of Castelnuevo has everything you need in terms of good food, basics, restaurants and cute cafes (and an amazing gelateria where you can even buy take out ice cream!). What more could you want?!

Great vacation in a very endowed house

  • 5 of 5

We (German couple with two 15 and 17 year old sons) have spent our annual vacation in Anna's house in the Villa Arceno estate. It was a very pleasant experience, and here are the main reasons:

The preparation (discussions about payment process etc.) happened very fast and smoothly. The description of the house is accurate. When you rent it, you are close to nature, you may see birds, bats, a pheasant...

Arriving there, not only a very practical welcome basket greets you (which may help you to avoid having to go shopping after a long trip), but also the introduction and explanation you will receive is very helpful.

The house itself was kept very clean and tidy.

The garden is also nice and well kept, but the most admirable thing for us (we have some experiences in renting houses for holidays in different European countries) was the elegant and comfortable interior of the house, and the perfect endowment of the house. We did not miss anything; if you do not want to visit the recommended restaurants in the area (which would be a great mistake), and want to live on self supply, this is perfectly possible.

The pool is also well kept, but even my tough boys used it only three times since the wheather in May was still too cold. By the way, you do not to bring your towels; there are enough in the house for this purpose.

Beds were fine and comfortable; we used the fireplce twice, very cosy.

We visited some of the recommended restaurants. All were good, but I want to especially praise the Anonimx for good service and excellent food and wine.

Were there weaknesses? Hardly any serious ones. The eletrical wires do not allow you to use dishwasher plus stove at the same time; you are warned to do that, but we found the same is true for dishwasher and water cooker. Then you have to find the main cusout switch in the outside... Parking is well available, but if you have a van or a SUV, there is little space for you. And we were slightly surprised to find that the main house is separated in three (very separate and isolated) appartments, but we may simply have overlooked this. And actually, it was not a problem at all

So we spend a very nice ime in Il Poggio, enjoyed it tremendously, and can only recommend it further.

Owner's Response: Thank you Martin for such a generous review! We were very pleased that you and your family were so well impressed by our house Arco al Poggio. We endeavour to deliver an experience to our guests and be true to what we offer on our website. Arco al Poggio is our home in Tuscany and we wish our guests to enjoy the house and its environment as much as we do. Hope to see you again in the future. (For information the oven and the dishwasher are designed not to be used simultaneously as a safety feature of the appliance). Anna

A holiday to remember

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing dream vacation in Italy we had with our family of four. Our hosts at Il Poggio, Anna and her team, are beyond unbelievable... they took time in explaining about the area, ensuring we had everything we needed, giving us plenty of privacy and always there if needed.

The property was extremely comfortable for ourselves and our children, exactly and beyond what appears on the website. We could eat in the dining room or sit out on the beautiful terrace with the spectacular view over Arceno. Everyday we were so happy to drive home from a great day of sightseeing to catch that unique evening sunset from the pool. There is a fully equipped kitchen and everything we could ever need. The bedrooms in our home were very comfortable. We never w our two boyatched tv but did have plenty of Internet when needed.

The home is a few minutes walk to the little hamlet of San Gusmè and a quick drive down to the town of Castelnuovo Berrdenga (for daily shopping, bank, newsagent etc) and a 10 minute drive to highly recommended town of Siena. Not to mention its a close drive from dozens of other small medieval towns and places where to taste the amazing Tuscan food and wine.

We were sad to leave beautiful Il Poggio...what a wonderful place and an incredible vacation!!!

Celine and Marc

The Casale Il Poggio is situated East of Siena in the South part of the wine region of Chianti near to the villages of Castelnuovo Berardenga and San Gusmè. Historical art and architecture may be found in Florence, Siena, San Giminiano, Arezzo, Pienza and the nearby region of Umbria. The Chianti region is famous for its castles and fortifications, the results of past strife between Florence and Siena. Local amenities include trattorie, restaurants, wine cellars (famous ones like Felsina and Brolio), local markets and fairs. Hot springs and spas (in Rapolano, Bagni San Filippo and Chianciano) are within easy reach and Tuscan seaside resorts are an hour away (Castiglion della Pescaia, Follonica). Golf and horse riding are available locally, or you may relax in a SPA not far away from Castelnuovo.

Each year in October the marathon named Ecomaratona is run also through the estate of Arceno.

Also, each year on 2nd July and 16th August the Palio, the historical horse race, is run in Siena.
