THE ESTATE OF VILLA ARCENO: The estate of Arceno covers 1000 hectares of forest, vineyards, olive groves, cypress avenues, dotted with traditional farmhouses “the Casali”, some of which are enigmatic, romantic ruins awaiting restoration.
The “Villa” (Manor House) of the estate dates from the 16th century along with its own chapel, a romantic park and lake. From the Villa the original owners would have managed the estate directing the farmhands and workers who once lived in the Casali with the livestock.
Il Poggio was once a working Casale but is now restored with modern benefits, it now houses those who wish to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Chianti countryside.
AROUNDABOUTS: From Il Poggio there are views towards the famous Crete, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and beyond towards Monte Amiata. To the rear of the Casale lies the medieval walled village of San Gusmè, a short 15 minute walk through the vines where, if one pleases may have a drink at the village café and admire panoramic views in almost all directions to Siena and its Torre del Mangia.
All areas of the estate are reached by “strade bianche”, literally “white roads” which are unpaved. Although used by the public these roads are quiet, allowing walking, cycling and jogging at one’s own pace. The surrounding region is stuffed with history, art, food and wine. Siena, with its famous “Palio” an exciting adrenaline fuelled horse race (2nd July and 16th August) is only 15 minutes away. With Italy’s excellent road network, Florence, San Giminiano, le Crete, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona and Arezzo are with easy reach for day trips. In the other direction Umbria with Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio and Todi.
AMENITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT: Famous for food and wine there are many places to see and go to in order to discover the flavours of Chianti. One might be a passive or active participant, either eating and drinking the produce or by taking cooking or winery courses at source and making the resulting produce oneself. If one is the more active type, a diverting round of golf or horse riding might be the ticket. There are spas and the seaside to indulge in should relaxing there be preferred.
Packed full of history and art, an almost endless list of galleries, exhibitions, museums, churches, palaces and other diverse artisanal places are to be discovered.
Anna and James, we are an Italian-Anglo couple who enjoy their lives between London, Milan and Tuscany. We have a busy life but also also love to have relaxing moments in Arceno where we find tranquillity after the buzzing of a big city. Love art, music, good food and even better wine.
Anna Crawford purchased this apartment in 2004
Anna and James enjoy Arco al Poggio since 2004. It was love at first sight and the place has become our magic retreat and we love to share this with our Guests.
Arceno is a private estate where history, beautiful landscapes, vineyards, flora and wild animals make the place unique in the whole of Tuscany. Our house benefits from it all and living life here is a special treat due to the beauty and harmony of the place.
Entering the Villa Arceno estate, you are immediately enveloped in a beautiful landscape of cypress lined hills, olive groves, vineyards and stone farmhouses, creating a perfect Tuscan scene. Il Poggio comes with a pretty garden, swimmng pool, and is elevated across two upper floors, giving outstanding views of the nearby village and the estate. The property is furnished to an excellent standard and offers every convenience for your stay. The large, private terrace is the most perfect setting to enjoy every meal and was saturated with almond blossom over Easter. Il Poggio is perfectly located to enjoy the amenities of nearby Castelnuovo Beradenga, which offers a good choice of local osterias and a local winery as well as a short drive to the historic towns Sienna and Florence, all manageable within a day. A perfect to relax and soak up the Italian sunshine, robust red wines and fabulous restaurants.
We read the reviews and thought this is for us! Two couples who enjoy spending their holidays together but also like to have their own privacy and space. This house was perfect! Well appointed, very elegantly furnished and with everything one might need for a cooking lesson. What fun we have had in learning how to make pasta.
The owner Anna and her team gave us all the right tips to enjoy the house, the estate where it is located and the surrounding area. They were always there for us and they made our life so easy from our arrival until the end of our holiday (not to mention the welcome basket and drinks we found on arrival!).
Our first time in Italy, we were a little daunted of not being able to find our way around in only one week. However everything went so smoothly and the hospitality offered was "luxurious" to say the least.
Finally we must mention the fantastic place where the property is located, Arceno, unique in this part of the world and very exclusive. The villa is perfect for two couples but also for a family with two children.
Thanks Anna for the fantastic experience. We are looking forward to another week of Tuscan "dolce vita".
Arco al Poggio has been a unique experience for its setting and the immaculate and extremely well appointed house.
We arrived in the evening and everything was laid on for us, we had nothing to take care of, a very warm greeting and a fantastic welcome basket that had enough for our first dinner and breakfast.
What we wanted from our holiday was to explore that area of the Chianti region of which we had heard so much.
Positioned in the exceptionally beautiful private estate of Arceno, it is few minutes walk through the vineyards to the small village of San Gusmè where we could dine and do small shopping. All you expect from a holiday in the rolling hills of Tuscany!
The area offers so much, first class restaurants, wineries where you may taste the local wines, the Arceno and Felsina having been our favourites. All this discovered thanks to the owner Anna who very friendly supported us during our own stay.
Overall it has been a unique experience hopefully to be repeated soon.
We always love returning to this lovely property because it has everything one could possibly need while staying in Tuscany. The location, scenery, vistas, well maintained gardens, are always a plus. There are wonderful, convenient restaurants nearby or markets should you want to cook in. The property is also well maintained and managed and the bountiful welcome basket stocked with the first evening's meal and the morning breakfast is a highlight. Excellent wine, beer, coffee and sparkling water round out the beverages. We will return again and again to this lovely property.
This place is fabulous. Vanessa met us and toured us through the house and around the yard, which includes a pool. She explained the use of the appliances, showed us where everything was in the house, gave us her contact information and restaurant suggestions. A very warm welcome.
ll Poggio is accessed via a drive over country roads and up a hill to a position near the top. Walking up stone steps to a covered porch with views over the valley brings you to the main level. Sitting in this outside space with wine and cheese in the late afternoon away from distracting noises is very relaxing.
The main level kitchen, dining and sitting areas share the same large space in an open concept. The kitchen features modern appliances, is well stocked with all the kitchen necessities and was an invitation to cook our own Italian meals. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast here, with supplies bought at the local grocery store, before starting our day. The welcome basket (a great touch) contained coffee, cold meat, cheese, jam, honey, pasta, sauce, bread and wine. The dining area has a sizeable table and 8 chairs. The sitting area has a comfortable couch and lounging chairs next to the large fireplace with wood burning stove.
The bedroom on the main level is roomy with plenty of wardrobe space. The bathroom with shower is next to this room, as is the washing machine.
The second bedroom is upstairs. It is larger than the main floor bedroom, with a large wardrobe, desk, couch and chairs. The adjacent spacious bathroom is modern with a great tub and shower combination.
All windows in the home have screens so they can be opened to allow a cool night breeze in and keep any insects out. The town of San Gusmé, about a kilometer away, is visible from the second floor bedroom through the vineyard. You can hear the peel of the church bell.
A twenty-minute walk in a bucolic setting of trees and vines leads to the Arceno winery. After a tasting of the locally produced wines we walked about 30 minutes to San Gusmé for some pasta and pizza in this small, quiet town.
A short drive from the house is the town of Castelnuovo Berardegna. Go to Bengodi Enoteca Ristorante. Have the risotto. Enjoy the Thursday morning market.
Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena, Castellina in Chianti are all within a short, scenic drive of Il Poggio, as are some great vineyards in this south region of Chianti.
Make this your home base in this part of Tuscany. This is the Italian experience you came for.
We were two couples staying for a week in this beautiful, well appointed villa. Highly recommend. The owner and caretaker were very responsive. We can hardly wait to go back to explore more of Tuscany from the comfort of this home away from home.
We have just returned to the UK after two weeks in Italy. After touring in the first week, the second week spent at the II Poggio villa in Tuscany was idyllic. It was a great place to relax after spending time in the cities. It was a brilliant base from where to explore Tuscany.
The views from the balcony and all the windows around the house were stunning. It was exactly how we had pictured it and hoped it would be. The 10 minute walk from the villa through the vineyards to San Gusme under a clear blue sky was one of the highlights of our time in Italy. There was everything we needed in the villa, the welcome basket was a lovely gesture and asking us in advance what else we would need on arrival was really appreciated. The way the villa
is set out was excellent for the 4 of us staying there – with bedrooms / bathrooms on either side and a choice of whether
you wanted to be upstairs or downstairs. Vanessa talking us through how to use everything and leaving instructions was so helpful. The areas in the garden and around the shared pool area allowed us to relax in the sun through the day. We loved spending evenings relaxing on the balcony as the sun faded and sampling local wines, with some candles kindly provided to keep the mosquitoes at bay. We closed the door for the last time with heavy hearts – after a wonderful week in the heart of beautiful Tuscany. Thank you Anna and Vanessa.
The Casale Il Poggio is situated East of Siena in the South part of the wine region of Chianti near to the villages of Castelnuovo Berardenga and San Gusmè. Historical art and architecture may be found in Florence, Siena, San Giminiano, Arezzo, Pienza and the nearby region of Umbria. The Chianti region is famous for its castles and fortifications, the results of past strife between Florence and Siena. Local amenities include trattorie, restaurants, wine cellars (famous ones like Felsina and Brolio), local markets and fairs. Hot springs and spas (in Rapolano, Bagni San Filippo and Chianciano) are within easy reach and Tuscan seaside resorts are an hour away (Castiglion della Pescaia, Follonica). Golf and horse riding are available locally, or you may relax in a SPA not far away from Castelnuovo.
Each year in October the marathon named Ecomaratona is run also through the estate of Arceno.
Also, each year on 2nd July and 16th August the Palio, the historical horse race, is run in Siena.
