About Randy and Betsy

Randy and Betsy are the owners of this cabin. The cabin is brand new, completed June 2012. It was built as a mountain retreat for our family and friends. We make our home in Littleton, Colorado a suburb of Denver, Colorado. Betsy originates from St. Louis, MO, but has spent most of her time in Colorado. Randy is from Phoenix, AZ but got to Colorado as fast as he could. We both enjoy this area for its beauty, quietness, the stars, cool air, and the outdoor activities.

Betsy is an artist and spends time painting at the cabin and in the area. She has her work displayed in the Courtyard Gallery in Buena Vista. Randy enjoys photography.

Randy and Betsy purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Randy and Betsy chose South Central Colorado

Betsy and I were first introduced to the Mt Princeton area in 2002 when we joined with four other families to build a small cabin within a mile of this one. We eventually decided to build a place of our own so we could spend more time in the mountains. Once you have stayed here you will agree that it is a special place!

What makes this cabin unique

We chose the property for this cabin because of the view and its proximity to a 14 acre meadow. Every morning we wake up and look outside to see what nature has for us. The valley is always changing with the clouds, the morning deer and the sunrise on the chalk cliffs providing something new. At night we anticipate sitting on the deck and looking up at the stars for an amazing display of the galaxy. Even though it feels like we are in the middle of the forest, we are minutes away from services and amenities.

Amazing family getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed here over the weekend. I received many accolades for finding this gem! It was close enough for us to enjoy many activities in Buena Vista and Salida. Yet far enough away to feel like we were secluded and had our own space. My kids loved playing outside and roaming the property as I comfortably watched from the deck and took in all the scenery. Of course the pool table and ping pong table were a huge hit and provided for hours of entertainment, time that would have most likely been spent watching TV had we been anywhere else! The cabin is beautifully decorated and has everything you need and more! We enjoyed listening to the CDs, playing games, and having the kitchen to be able to eat breakfast every morning. We took advantage of the many great restaurants for our other meals: Eddyline, Lariat, (Buena Vista), Boathouse, and Amica's (Salida). We hiked the Colorado Trail at the Chalk Cliffs Trailhead (just down the road), visited St. Elmo and the chipmunks, had a zipline tour, and ended with the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs. It was a perfect family vacation, and we can't wait to do it again in the future!

Great cabin and area

  • 5 of 5

Cabin is well maintained and home is beautiful. Very comfortable. Peaceful surroundings where you don't hear neighbors and traffic, just the birds and mountain wind. Beautiful view of the mountains as you are right at the foot of the mountains. Very peaceful to sit on the upper or lower deck. Deer came into the yard each night and a bobcat on the edge of the property one night. We saw an Elk on the road coming to the cabin. Lots of family fun with the pool table and ping pong table as well as horseshoe pit. Great location with multiple white water rafting companies near in Buena Vista or Salida. Hot Springs on the road coming in as well as horse stables. We ended up staying an extra night. Property owners were great to work with.Would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

Awesome place, full of amenities. We had a great time. Pocket on pool table was broken and got poked by a fishing hook on couch. Just a cleaning tip, under the cushions on furniture. But it was wonderful and would stay again in a heartbeat. Everything was smooth. Looking forward to perhaps booking here again. Loved it.

Fantastic Location and Views, Easy Access

  • 5 of 5

We took a weekend getaway trip to the cabin(small home). It's a well taken care of property, with an unique and thoughtful layout. Its very close to Buena Vista, Mt. Antero and Princeton. An excellent base camp for activities in the collegiate peaks range. Owner was responsive and helpful. Highly recommended!

Fall Birthday Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This property was amazing! The house was clean, fully stocked, nicely decorated and boasts the most incredible views! Met up here with a friend and our hubbys to celebrate our 28th birthdays and could not have chosen a better locale. With as many things as there are to do here in this area, it was hard to leave the house because it was such a cozy spot with the best views of the Chalk Cliffs. We did venture up the road to St. Elmo which was very cool, especially because it was so close. We spent the most time cooking; the kitchen has everything you could want! Spices, flour, sugar, coffee, foil & saran, paper towels and trash bags were all provided to make for an easy stay and though the kitchen was on the small side, it worked great for feeding only 4 people. We just loved the layout of the house and fully utilized the cozy window seat in the living room to wage a Cribbage battle. The pool table was a favorite for the guys - it was hard to get them upstairs. If only this place had a hot tub :) Though we never got to meet, I have to thank Randy & Betsy for maintaining such an awesome property and ensuring that the rental process went smoothly while answering all my questions.

The cabin is located in an area known as the Mt. Princeton area or the Chalk Cliffs area.

The Arkansas Valley region is a 'banana belt’, which keeps the temperatures from the extremes and limits heavy snow fall to elevations above 7,500'. This cabin is on the snow line, so snow depths are variable. Within minutes of the cabin you can hike, fish, 4-wheel, cycle, swim, cross country ski, raft, rock climb, and camp. For the more adventurous, hiking any of the 14teeners in the area is an accomplishment.

Everyone should take a trip down the Arkansas River at least once to experience white water rafting. Depending on the water level and type of trip there are trips for all levels from calmer waters to Class 5 water.

The Mt. Princeton Resort and Hot Springs is a popular destination with a hot springs swimming pool.

St Elmo ghost town is 12 miles up valley and is a great mountain drive and off-roading area in the summer.

Chalk Creek is a 10-minute walk and good for fishing.

Horseback riding is available near the Mt Princeton resort.

For unique restaurants and art galleries spend the afternoon and evening in Buena Vista 9 miles north or Salida12 miles south. There are several interesting bars in both towns.

A perfect weekend in this area would include our local favorites:

Explore St. Agnes falls: Drive 10 minutes up the valley and hike .5 miles to the base of the falls.

Eat breakfast at the Evergreen Café in Buena Vista.

Take home a painting from a local artist at the Courtyard Gallery in Buena Vista.

Go on an adventure with Noah’s Ark Rafting Company or another local outfitter.

Soak in the hot springs at the Mt. Princeton Resort or Cottonwood Hot Springs.

Take a scenic drive up to the ghost town, St. Elmo -- a trip back to the gold mining days.

Enjoy a gourmet dinner at the Laughing Ladies Restaurant in Salida or the Eddyline Restaurant & Brewery in Buena Vista.
