About John & Irene Moore

We are lovers of travel, but we always come back to the Texas Hill County which is our favorite place in the world - home. John grew up as a fourth generation Texan in San Antonio and for many years made a living as a sports photographer in Central Texas. Irene grew up in a Large Hungarian family and was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. We love doing anything outdoors. We have a big family and lots of friends! We both compete in ultra distance canoe racing, marathons and the occasional triathlon. We love golf, movies, sailing in the Caribbean and spending time at the cabins.

John & Irene Moore purchased this cabin in 2005

Why John & Irene Moore chose Leakey

We fell in love with the beauty of the Hill Country, the rugged beauty of the land combined with the crystal clear water of the Frio and the wide open skies at night. When I was young my mom started bringing us out to Leakey for the holidays, we used to come out and spend summer nights dancing in Garner State Park. Eventually we wanted to get a place of our own out here, but we wanted to get away from the huge summer crowds further down river. Mom is a river guide and Master Naturalist and for years brought her kayaking groups to the Frio for fun paddles here and around this area.

What makes this cabin unique

The very best thing about our cabins is that they are DIRECTLY on the beautiful Frio River. Sitting on the front porch, you are literally looking down at the River about 20 feet away. At night you can hear the water trickling over the rocks and if you listen closely, .....deer hooves on the river bed as they come out for a drink. Located in a sparsely populated area of Real County, this charming little Frio River Canyon is a perfect Texas Hill Country Getaway for couples and families.

Just far enough from town (10 mins) that you can really enjoy the peaceful sunsets and sunrises and close enough that you are only minutes away if you forgot the bread, or need some fresh veggies for the salad.

Beautiful views!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the cabin and hope to come back when it's 110 degrees out so we can frolic in the river without shivering. The countryside out here is beautiful. The Frio River is shallow and perfect for letting kids splash around. They spent hours catching minnows in the Frio and then warmed up by roasting marshmallows at the fire pit. The cabin had everything we could need -- abundant towels, blankets, utensils, pantry staples (olive oil, spices, coffee, salt & pepper, etc). There is another cabin adjacent to this one, but you don't see it unless you're parking the car. The fire pit and outdoor seating are on the opposite end of the cabin facing the woods/river. It feels very secluded, with a private trail down to the water.

Awesome Hill Country getaway !

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed Spring Break 2018 on the Frio! The Moore’s were great hosts and the cabin was well equipped with everything we needed. Our son enjoyed fishing for bass in the Frio and our dog Bucee really loved the easy river access.

A perfect Hill Country getaway !

Great Weekend GetAway :)

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay! So happy to have found this place! Kitchenware, linens, towels provided and detailed communication. It was easy to keep an eye on our dogs with the tie ups outside while we were making a fire in the fire pit. Great job, you guys thought of everything!

Property was beautiful, quiet and serene.

  • 4 of 5

What a fabulous place! The view was spectacular. It was such a peaceful, tranquil time, especially after the hustle and bustle of Christmas. Even though it was cold we spent most of the time outside... the fire pit was perfect. The kids had so much fun hiking, running around, searching for fossils and flint and even wading in the water with their boots.

Inside the house was everything you could possibly need. If I had one complaint it would be the hot water. In spite of the owners instructions on how it worked, we still had difficulties getting piping hot water. But I would still highly recommend this property and my family plans to return in the summer when we can really enjoy the river.

scenic seclusion

  • 5 of 5

Spent New Years here on one of the coldest weekends in Texas memory. The cabins stayed perfectly warm, and there were more than enough blankets on hand to make the nights cozy. At first I was apprehensive about not having internet access for that long, but really it made the stay that much more relaxing. The cabin is cute, and the dogs loved the river!

The home is awesome and cozy. The owners were very thoughtful when stocking this place. I love the access to trails. It feels like you're own private campground. I can't wait to go back.

We love the location of this property. It is in a wonderful little valley that keeps things quiet and preserves a feeling of seclusion but you can be in downtown Leakey in about 10 minutes and Garner State Park is just a short drive from there. There are places to hike and go wading or fishing or kayaking on the property and if you are a cyclist or biker, then some of the most popular Hill Country routes pass less than 1 mile from the front door. During the holidays there are several local festivals in town and the annual Christmas Bazzaar. In the summer, there is a popular July 4th parade.
