Barga Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 3 shower rooms, sleeping 6+2.

A lovingly restored 3 bed detached stone cottage, and separate 1 bed chestnut house (let together), both with original beamed ceilings and flooring, situated in the hills overlooking the beautiful medieval town of Barga. Just a 10 min. drive or so from town, yet very peacefully situated in circa 6 hectares of private farm land/forest high up in the hills. The views from both the houses/extensive patio area & the land are stunning. Eating al fresco is a real treat -the lights of the town provide a romantic backdrop, and due to the altitude it feels possible to touch the stars! Alongside the patio area there is a large original outdoor pizza oven. In the fields above, there is the infinity style swimming pool (5M x10M). If you like to cook, then the house is perfect - there is a wood burning 'aga' in the kitchen, a modern oven 'outside' and also the pizza oven & BBQ. The houses are furnished in traditional style, are well equipped and lovingly presented. A perfect 'remote, yet central', and ideal for groups of two couples requiring privacy from each other, but plenty of room to dine and socialise together.

This choice is ideal for families, with plenty of room for children to explore the grounds, and with the second outdoor kitchen you need never set foot in the house during the day if you prefer! Just use the outdoor kitchen for your supply of cold drinks and wine, & to prepare those salads hand picked from the grounds...

The pool is situated above the house, with stunning views of the countryside...

There really is a feeling of pure peace at this house,& it is the perfect place to completely relax, and enjoy the pleasures of the scenery and the quiet!

This is an agriturismo and as such bees are kept on site, at a good distance from the house, (fresh honey provided) and there are 3 resident cats - not permitted in house. There are also goats in a field up above the pool area.

Fuller details - main house:

The property retains most of its original features, with original chestnut beamed ceilings throughout, and wooden and terracotta flooring.

There is a wood burning stove in the kitchen, and a large fireplace in the living room.

For summer living there is also an 'outdoor' kitchen .

Ground floor:

Large entrance hall, with dresser.

Living / dining room with open fireplace, Satellite TV including English channels, DVD, Internet access.

Farmhouse kitchen with large eating table, wood burning aga style stove, separate small hob, grill, fridge and microwave. Door leading onto:

Extensive patio area overlooking the town of Barga. Outside eating furniture, and sun beds. Outside clay pizza oven (the owners will show you how to use this if you wish to have a go), and fully operational chestnut drying house.

From the patio there is an 'outside kitchen', with oven, freezer, fridge, washing machine and dishwasher. There is also a further shower room, so that the house can be redundant during the day if you wish!

One double bedroom

One twin bedroom

Extensive 'landing' area with TV, and sofa bed.

Modern shower room

The property has a real romantic feel and is complete with four poster bed!

On the ground floor there is a living area with large windows and arched doorway out to patio, separated from the kitchen/dining area by a circular working fireplace which sits in the middle of the room and therefore heats the entire house.

Kitchen has oven, hob, fridge, washine machine… living area has working fireplace, dvd player.

Up the spiral staircase there is a lovely romantic double aspect 4 poster bedroom with doors placed opposite the bed, to take advantage of the wonderful views..

There is also a good sized modern shower room.

The private 'infinity style' swimming pool (10M x 5M plus roman steps) is high above the house so as not to totally spoil the traditional feel of the property, and to ensure it remains totally out of sight. The view from the pool is wonderful and the style of pool means it feels one is swimming in the mountains

The owners are very keen to share their love of the area, and will be happy to provide for all your needs.

Not suitable for elderly or infirm due to steep Climb to the pool.

We stayed at Mengarino for three weeks and completely agree with all the positives in preceding reviews. The stone farmhouses, courtyard and ovens are historically beautiful but also currently romantic and comfortable. The infinity pool area at the top of the property is transcendent. The views of the Serrchio Valley and Apuane Alps are breathtaking but there is also a goat herd with tinkling bells which moves around the valley and mountains which added to the transcendence. Our pizza night with Marco and Simonetta was also a highlight for us. They came with their two lovely daughters and Marco's 82 year old beautiful mother. It stormed that night which only added to the conviviality of the evening.

We absolutely loved the town of Barga. There are at least five excellent restaurants. Find your favorite ( ours was Caffe Capretz) and eat there often. We had pasta every day of our three weeks in Italy, but from walking in Barga, hiking outside of Barga, and swimming in Mengarino's pool every afternoon, we lost weight.

We have vacationed all over the world. This is one of the most special places we've ever stayed. It receives our highest recommendation.

Excellent property in an unspoilt area

  • 5 of 5

One could not tire of the view from the edge of the infinity pool across the valley to a stunning mountain range! The property is quite remote but all the better for it. The accommodation is quite flexible with the second house being very usefu for our party of six. The owners are very friendly and helpful, not to say skilled pizza makers. Barga, about 8km away, has a lovely old town and all the facilities needed for an excellent stay.

A wonderful fortnight in beauty and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

The house was well-maintained and clean and the gardens and pool were immaculate. The owner, Simonetta, was attentive and very friendly. She ensured that we understood the local area and we had her number if anything extra was needed(which it wasn't). Simonetta and her husband Marco even hosted a pizza evening using the pizza oven on site. It was a unique experience and in many ways the favourite part of our stay.

The house itself is historic and positioned on the side of the rugged hills surrounding Barga and it provided amazing views of the valley and the hills opposite. This gave a fantastic feeling of peace and tranquillity.

The swimming pool garden was the signature of the property as it is elevated above/behind the house and was a lovely area to relax and enjoy the lovely pool and the weather, which was mainly hot and sunny with just a couple of days of cloud. Needless to say our young children remained around the pool for days on end and this was no hardship for us!

Barga itself is a very pleasant town and was a ten-minute drive down the hills. There were a number of really good small towns within easy reach and Lucca was magnificent, although an hour away.

A number of our friends are already wanting to book this house on the strength of our photos alone!

A gorgeous place to stay in Italy

  • 5 of 5

Mengarino is situated in the hills above Barga and you wind your way up enjoying increasingly stunning views. On arrival we were met by Simonetta who had been excellent at making sure we had directions and who provided a warm welcome. We were shown around the property which is stunning with an older farmhouse and newer apartment. After settling in we wandered up to the pool, and oh my word, what a stunning spot with amazing views.

The houses are well equipped, there is a barbecue by the farmhouse and a lovely covered seating area where you can eat outside.

Marco visits to check the pool and see if you need anything and brought honey and a delicious semi freddo and is incredibly helpful.

On the Thursday evening Marco, Simonetta and their son came and made the most delicious pizzas in the property's pizza oven.

So did we like it - no, we adored it! Mengarino is a little bit of heaven and simply gorgeous.

Paradise in Tuscany

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved Mengarino. 2 fabulous houses which suited our family perfectly. Stunning setting and we were so content at night to bbq and eat and drink together looking at such beautiful views of Barga at night. Even more exquisite was the pool and its views. Simonetta and Marco made our stay as easy and peaceful as possible. Only tiny drawback is the drive into Barga for restaurants - a good 10 minutes but the effort was balanced by the peace and tranquility of the setting of Mengarino we will return thank you

A very special place

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Mengarino with our two teenagers for one week and had to move on to another accommodation as it was only available for 7 days. After experiencing Mengarino we really didn't want to go anywhere else, so I would suggest booking it early enough for a whole two weeks if you plan on staying in the Barga area for that amount of time. We stayed in the smaller cottage and our teems stayed in the other - the first time ever we had such privacy on a family holiday. Of course they relied on our place for cooking etc and that's where we gathered for that, otherwise we lounged by the pool or read outside. This past summer's weather in Tuscany was the worst in history we heard (and in other places in Italy) and we had at least a full 4 days of rain spread out over the 2 weeks with nights being colder than I packed for. When it was dry the sun was hot and pool area to die for. Total privacy was heaven. As the other reviews say, the owners Simoneta and Marco were just the loveliest hosts and seemed truly keen to host their pizza night - it wasn't just a token gesture. Simonetta is English speaking and Marco is not but this did not deter his warm friendliness. He makes honey there and left a jar for us and the pizzas were overflowing that evening. Accommodation wass fully equipped with loads of towels and kitchen essentials and Simonetta was kind enough to allow us to arrive early on that first rainy afternoon. if we ever wanted to stay in that area again this place would be our first choice - worth every penny! One minor point, the directions were not exactly perfect in terms of estimating distance to landmarks and we got a bit confused but managed. We weren't used to driving up so far with so many windy roads and were less inclined to do this at night in the dark. But it was a great place to settle in to with good food and drink anyway. Thanks to Simonetta and Marco again for such a warm welcome!
