This gated community is highly sought-after by vacationers because of it's beautiful location, close proximity to the sights and sounds of the beautiful Pacific Ocean and for the incredibly private crystal clear, geothermally heated lagoons for your relaxing pleasure. Kapoho is rarely crowded, the Kapoho Tidepools are protected from the ocean's waves by a coral reef, the water is crystal clear, and often warmer than the ocean because of geothermally heated springs that enter into the tidepools in various places. Right out the back door, you will find honu (sea turtles) making their home in these waters.

Another 10 minute drive down the Red Road is the historic Kehena Black Sand Beach and don't miss old Pahoa town, just a short 10 mile drive from the hale where you will find the original boardwalks that date back to the late 1800's when this sleepy little town was king in the sugar plantation days. There is great dining in this little town with Italian, Thai, Chinese and Tex-Mex. Hilo town with all of its historical points of interest, color and famous for its friendly people is only about 35 minutes away and the ever changing Volcanoes National Park is about a 50 minute drive from Hale Lokelani.

As always, WOW!

2nd time here, but certainly not our last! For those who don't need the 5 star hotel services, you can't find a better spot to chill out and hit your reset button. Beautiful setting, very friendly sea life, quiet, and now with internet, bring your roku stick and turn on a hawaiian music station, make a mai tai and reeeeelax! Bring your mask and fins! Snorkeling in the bay and champagne pond is wonderful. There are many kinds of colorful fishes everywhere and cool and hot places are all around the protected part of the bay ( it's calm in there even when the waves are pounding the rest of the bay). A 3 foot big eye tuna hung out with us for 2 weeks, as did seven distinctive green turtles and one white one. For newbies, there are coolers on site, so take one to Pahoa on your grocery trips for the perishables, just in case you want to stop somewhere on your way home. Paolo's in Pahoa offers some of the finest Italian food anywhere, including Italy. Do Not Miss the mushroom ravioli in both the world class bolognaise and the equally etherial gorgonzola cream sauces. We usually get an extra order to go - trust me, you will thank yourself later! The little organic grocery in town is awesome as well. Hale Lokelani is a perfect retreat for writing, reading or just soaking up the beauty and doing as much or as little as you wish. The night market at the end of the road is absolutely outstanding - top notch foods, fantastic music, art you will actually want to take home, great people! Tons of stuff to do within an hour's drive, but you'll find out all too soon, if you have stocked up on food and drinks, you won't want to go anywhere! Mahalo and ENJOY!!!!!! P.S. The management is fantastic! Accessible and responsive, they take real good care of you and the place. You should too! Keep the Aloha alive!!!

The location was wonderful.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed staying in this house. It is a long way to most things from this area but it feels more like Hawaii then a hotel. There are things that could be improved about the property that would be easy. First, it needs new sheets of some quality that fit the bed. The sheets appeared as old as I and did not stay on during the night. Though the kitchen was fairly well equipped it could use a decent baking sheet and coffee filters. Imagine having to drive 20 min. for your first cup of coffee. The white bath towel was permanently stained or dirty. We could not get the cable guide to update and work well. These things can easily be improved, and I am still happy I stayed there. The fish and turtles were wonderful.

Relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was very enjoyable and relaxing. Jeana was fantastic with all of our questions and very accommodating. The house was fully equipped with all the things we needed to prepare and cook our meals there. We snorkeled every day sometimes twice a day. We would definitely recommend to any of our friends!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd stay at Hale Lokelani. I didn't think I could love it more than last time, but I did. We were here 2 years ago when the new owner bought the place and were very pleased with the upgrades. The counters were refinished and very clean, and the bed had anew very comfy mattress. We are in heaven when we stay here, really get the rest we need, don't need to rush around. Having the lagoon for snorkeling is just awesome. It's not as flashy as Kealakekua, but you get to know the inhabitants, and the warm water is divine. Civilization is a short drive away, and easy access to Hilo and less visited sights to see up the east coast. I missed it as soon as we got home, noticed the lack of coquis to sing me to sleep. The only complaint I have is that if you like to cook, either bring sharp knives or pick one up in town, and when we come again, I'm bringing my frying pan. Aloha!

Great Family Time

  • 5 of 5

We stayed from July 3-9 and was a great location for us. Nice quiet location away from the traffic. My 9 yr old daughter enjoyed swimming every day in the lagoon with fishes and turtles. Very relaxing spot. However, it was a little uneasy at first to have our kids sleep down stairs away from main floor. But, they were good with it. Will like to go back again soon. One week was not long enough to enjoy the big island. Check in and out was easy. Note: no cell phone service. Just WiFi.
