About Peter Geiger
I am an educator and collector and divide my time between San Francisco, California, United States, Edinburgh, United Kingdom and Palma de Mallorca, Spain. I value beauty in the built environment and a walkable capital city: Edinburgh surpasses my expectations—I have never before lived in a place with so much to offer so close by.
Peter Geiger purchased this Apartment in 2012
Why Peter Geiger chose New Town
The well-regarded New Town location is close to the shops and restaurants of Broughton Street. The raised Ground Floor contains the principal rooms of the Georgian house under 13 foot ceilings. The past few years have seen a renewed interest in times gone by and I have chosen a 'Downton Abbey' theme to the furnishings and decoration using reclaimed fixtures, antique furniture and period colors.
What makes this Apartment unique
The sunny eat-in kitchen, large dining hall, sunny studio bedroom and substantial drawing room with its two vast windows make this flat a very comfortable and versatile home. The kitchen, bath and laundry have all new appliances. Two period marble fireplaces (decorative only, not working), working window shutters and an eclectic collection of objects combine to create a unique feeling of serenity.

5 Weeks Spent Here During Christmas, New Year's and January!
My husband and I spent 5 wonderful weeks in this flat at 5 Great King Street! What a great location for walking Edinburgh and enjoying the many sights, the holiday decorations and the New Year's Hogmanay events at the Castle. The flat was everything we needed and felt like home! The bedroom is large and the bed is very comfortable. Linens are nice, too. Kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to make a meal on the nights you want to stay in. We made good use of the washer and dryer - it was a life saver. Internet works great and we were able to do a bit of work while on holiday. We enjoyed the weekly cleaning service that was provided very much, too. There is a small Tesco a block away and a larger one within easy walking distance for serious shopping. There are so many great restaurants and pubs within 5-6 blocks so you are never far from home after a fun night out! Easy walk to Princes Street, the museums, the Castle, Edinburgh Uni, Stockbridge and more. Peter, our host, was very helpful and communicated in a timely and professional manner to our needs. His assistant, Anna, was also very helpful and provided service to the flat on a weekly basis. We had such a great time and highly recommend this flat if you are visiting Edinburgh!
Excellent place to stay while in Edinburgh
We really enjoyed our stay in the flat. It was nice to stay in a safe neighborhood and be close enough to be able to walk everywhere. The kitchen is well stocked with nice pans and appliances. I did miss not having a microwave, but did fine in making all our breakfasts and dinners. We found that grocery shopping at M & S for two people made meals quickly to prepare and very inexpensive. After taking a 17 day tour it was nice to eat healthier than eating out all the time. The bed was very comfortable. I would recommend the flat for anyone wanting to feel like home while travelling. Convenient cafes, shopping, and sightseeing within walking distance.
We found the apartment an enchantingly furnished retreat after a day of sightseeing. The style of the apartment design, the décor, the windows, the location, all worked together to help us learn about the history of Edinburgh and the buildings in New Town. We shopped at local butchers, cheese and fish shops in Stockbridge and on Broughton St., and the kitchen had all we needed to prepare some very nice meals with our purchases. There are interesting antique shops and a nice bakery just around the corner on Dundas St. The apartment is central to a number of bus lines. We were there one week, and purchased Lothian Bus Ridacards to have unlimited bus and tram rides in that time. We used those to not only avoid unnecessary trudging up and down hills, but also to go to various parts of the city such as Morningside and toward Leith to an antique mall. The bus routes and schedules are all online and easy to use. All in all, the apartment was perfect for our purposes, and a joy in which to relax and enjoy meals with local ingredients.
New Town gem
We loved the location, furnishings, comfort and hospitality of this accommodation. We highly recommend it.
Be in your own BBC Period Piece
Ideally located in 18th century built new town Edinburgh, quiet and away from the tourist hubbub. We walked to the important old Town sites, Stockbridge, Botanic Garden, Art Museums. Restaurants, coffee shops, and a small grocery are very nearby. The lovely flat has a comfortable bed and nice cotton linens and feather pillows in a bedroom with a garden view and wooden shutters, small but completely adequate new bathroom, and functional kitchen. The large rooms are furnished with antique furniture, porcelains, and 19th century paintings, so care must be taken with all.
Awww…Margaret, your review warms my heart! Thank you indeed for your stay and for your very kind and considered words here: I am so happy you noticed so much and took so much delight in your Edinburgh sojourn!
Great King Street is the central avenue of Edinburgh's New Town World Heritage Site, dating from the early part of the 19th Century. The private gardens of Drummond Place lie to the eastern end and those of Royal Circus at the western end. It is particularly well suited for access to all the amenities of the city centre with George Street and Princes Street just 1/4 mile away. Waverley Train Station, with regular train services to London, is less than half a mile and there is good road access westwards towards the bypass, Edinburgh airport and Central Scotland Motorway Network. Shopping is just a short walk away is Broughton Street—with one of the best butchers and one of the best fishmongers in town.
