About Martyn Jones

Having been passionate about the mountains for almost 20 years mainly through road cycling and secondly through skiing, I decided to take the plunge and run a small chalet rental business... a cosy home-from-home that reflected the kind of place I would like to stay in myself. Somewhere with amazing links for (world-class) skiing yet within an authentic unspoilt mountain setting... I chose the small hamlet of Pourchery next to Vaujany for these reasons, oh and did I mention the absolutely stunning mountain and lake panorama with South/South West aspect!

Whilst I now live in New York I still spend time each season there enjoying the chalet/location as a holidaymaker myself - ski, hike, bike, enjoy!

Why Martyn Jones chose Alpe d'Huez area

For one, its very spacious compared to typical 'chalets' in french mountain resorts. It has its own garage, is set in its own rock gardens and provides loads of parking space.

Whilst perfect for the more independent travelers it does also offer the benefit of a nearby (150 metres) free bus service to and from Vaujany village - hassle free quick access to Vaujany's huge high altitude ski lift!

The unique selling point for me is the fact you have world-clsss skiing / facilities and mountain sports access yet within an authentic mountain hamlet setting - unspoilt

The large decked balcony & terrace area (45m2) provides incredible Rhone Alps mountain and lake views - picnic table & parasol provide comfort for alfresco dining.

What makes this chalet unique

Cosy, private alpine home-from-home feel in a traditional French hamlet yet with world-class ski and cycling on your doorstep.

Chalet Verney, situated within the Vaujany commune (hamlet of ‘Pourchery’), is only 2km stunning drive from Vaujany village centre and its super-sized ski lift. Don't let this short car/free bus drive put you off if you think you might prefer to a 'ski-in / ski-out' location... due to its heritage as a mountain village farming community, Vaujany is NOT a ski-in/ski-out ‘resort!’ and in fact faces the main slopes rather than being situated on them.

Vaujany’s South West aspect faces rather than sits within the (North facing) slopes and so you need to take one of the smaller lifts to get back up to the village once at the bottom of the so, your skis are already off and being carried when you disembark from the lifts in Vaujany centre.

Conveniently, rather than hobble back to your chalet or apartment - you can simply jump into your car parked next to the lifts (all parking in Vaujany is free) and be tucked up back in Chalet Verney in no time, complete with your own private parking driveway.

If you have booked ski hire or equipment through Atou Sports then it is also possible to have a free locker(s) in the shop to store your gear overnight. Another advantage of staying in the hamlet of Pourchery is the comparably low rental prices - a better standard of accommodation for your money - more spacious and of high quality ‘home-from-home’ (detached) lodgings.

Finally, you have the most complete mountain panorama in the entire valley!

Best of all worlds

Spectacular views from a comfortable well appointed home. I loved lounging on the couch and soaking in the mountain range, eating breakfast on the terrace, enjoying a cozy dinner by the fire, and walking out the back yard to a magical hike of moss, trees, and mountains.

Then five minutes up the road, donning skis (rented at a discount), and shuttling up a ski lift into a winter wonderland and world class skiing. How could I have been hiking amongst charming spring time flowers the same day?

Next I ended my day at the nearby vaujany pool for a dip in the jacuzzi to soothe my aching muscles.

Blissful vacation. I will definitely go back!

unforgettable two weeks at Chalet Verney

We had a late summer holiday , both walking and cycling, and every day was a delight - finishing with a good glass of wine on the patio/decking watching such stunning sunsets - paradise! We won`t hesitate to book again for next year.

Stunning views, ideal access to the slopes

Fantastic stay at this undiscovered resort. Easy access from Grenoble and a feast of skiing awaits - the 'super lift' from this satellite resort taking you to the heart of Alpe 2 but no Q's!!!!! Chalet worked perfect, comfy, lovely log fire and great views down the valley. Check out the pizza restaurant in the town amazing food and not too pricey and great little sports bar for apres beer right next to the main lift. Don't be afrid to try something new, we had a fab stay, very peaceful in the evenings.

Great retreat with stunning views

We couldn't have chosen a better place to get away from it all and have a relaxing break. The weather was fantastic and we made good use of the great decked area, which was bathed in sun the whole day. The chalet itself is immaculate and well equipped, it can easily cope with several couples. It is situated in a small but charming village. If you enjoy walking, it's not far to the next village where there are restaurants. All in all a great break, would thoroughly recommend for a getaway.

Autumn getaway!

A memorable stay here in chalet Verney - first time in the area and loved its scenery, tranquility and authenticity. Chalet was spacious and whilst only one bathroom it didn't feel overcrowded with 5 of us - huge balcony and terrace area were great for the kids to roam around and views were amazing - think we were lucky with the weather - was in the 20's each day in late October! Apparently there was snow at the same time last year although also heard that the area has a fantastic sun record all year round. Love Vaujany village and the hamlet we stayed in (Pourchery) - last night was spent eating out nextdoor in a quirky gites run by a friendly local woman - portions were enough for a small army! Considering returning for a ski holiday as the facilities and sheer size of the ski area seem top class especially for such a traditional location.

The Vaujany Ski Domain is an integral part of an enormous domain covering 8 village communal territories : Alpe d'Huez , Auris, Clavans, Le Freney d'Oisans, La Garde, Oz en Oisans, Villard Reculas and Vaujany.

The 160 place Cable Car systems takes you from the village at 3812,5 feet to 8540 feet in minute…The next stop up is 10156,5 feet at the Pic Blanc looking out on to the Mont Blanc, the Grand Paradis, the Meije and the Ecrin National Park.

Skiing down offers a choice from 220 km of managed slopes of all skill levels . The slopes , or pistes in french, cover 6801,5 feet of altitude variant cutting through gulleys and forests ,to a multitude of lift and cable car options, - .frankly it's hardly possible to familiarise oneself with the whole ski domain..it being so vast!
