Best studio location in Kaanapali's best resort! When Honua Kai was still just a blueprint, we had the choice of any unit in the development. We chose this one. On the 5th floor, it is high enough to provide views and ambience, but not so high that the resort experience gets diluted. We waited for the Konea tower so that we could get the layered view of courtyard, tiki torches, the classic thatched roofline of Duke's Beach House, and views of Molokai Channel and Lanai. The view is terrific during the day and stunning in the evening. We opted for the location on the north side so that the tropical sun is more filtered and nuanced in the afternoon. Of course, the interior location means trade winds are gentle and you enjoy the sounds of lapping waves and chirping birds instead of the highway sounds more prevalent with exterior units.
The condo itself is perfect. The bed is super-comfortable and is positioned to capture a direct wake-up ocean view. The view gets even better while enjoying a meal or drinks on the lanai (balcony). The kitchen is spacious and fully equipped with high-end appliances, dishes, and cooking utensils. We even have BBQ utensils so that you can cook up your favorite steak or seafood using the resort BBQs. The sitting area is very comfortable with a sofa that folds out into a bed. We also provide a Pak 'n Play for little keikis. Of course, the unit comes with a washer/dryer and laundry detergent. You'll also find a couple of boogie boards, two beach chairs, and an umbrella. The bath has a full-size tub for soaking, a shower, and a vanity area with a make-up mirror and blow dryer.
Honua Kai is top-rated for good reason. It is the first new whole-ownership beachfront property built on Kaanapali in 20 years and has all the expected features of a luxury resort. Besides the beach, enjoy an elaborate kiddie pool complex with a 40-ft slide and lazy river, a separate adult pool, fine dining at famous Duke's on-site restaurant, organic deli selections at Aina Gourmet, on-site BBQs, work-out facilities, the luxurious Ho'ola Spa, underground parking and more. By the way, Duke's was just named as one of America's top 100 places to dine al fresco!
Honua Kai is conveniently located within a 5 minute drive to Lahaina and a 10 minute drive to Kapalua. Relaxing at the beach, snorkeling, diving, surfing, hiking, golf, shopping--all you need for your Hawaiian vacation is just minutes away. Or, be rejuvenated by never leaving the resort -- it's all good!
Our rates are very competitive and we offer great deals for last minute bookings. Mahalo!
We have been visiting Maui for years. In fact, my husband worked his way through college by spending extended summers managing employees on the local Maui Land & Pine pineapple plantation in Napili. The site of the Honua Kai resort was previously one of his pineapple fields-no wonder it's such a sweet place!
Barbara purchased this condo in 2013
Given our affinity and connection with West Maui, we were thrilled to hear of the conceptual Honua Kai. As the first new whole-ownership resort on Kaanapali in decades, we loved the idea of a 5-star resort on the quiet end of Kaanapali near Napili and Kapalua. We've watched it rise from an old pineapple field to a beautiful resort and couldn't be happier!
As mentioned, we selected this unit because it provides the best combination of setting and comfort. Most important was an interior location that feels like it's in a different world. Our entire view is of the resort and the ocean. The interior setting protects us from wind gusts, and the only sights and sounds are of the resort and the ocean beyond. The Konea tower is nicely oriented to take in the island of Lanai and our location in the tower protects us from the direct summer afternoon sun.
Inside, the unit is very conveniently located right across from the elevator for quick access to the lobby and underground parking.
This was our third trip to Maui but our first stay at Honua Kai. We found everything to be as advertised on the website and by all the positive reviews from pleased customers - this was a first-rate experience. My wife especially loved being able to open the lanai doors, recline on the bed with her morning coffee, and gaze out over the beautiful grounds to see the ocean and the distant Molokai. We used the beach chairs and umbrella daily for beach and snorkel trips, and the fully-stocked kitchen was wonderful. There was not a single thing that did not fully satisfy us about is unit or experience. We anxiously look forward to future Maui trips, and connecting with Barbara will be first on our list to help make our plans. Thanks so much..

This was our second trip to Honua Kai. We were so pleased we went with Home Away. This was a wonderful experience! It was great dealing directly with the owner, Barbara Bell. She was very attentive to any questions we had. The property manager, Michele, met us promptly when we arrived and was very thorough showing us the condo. The condo is extremely well maintained and superbly decorated. The furnishings were very comfortable, especially the bed that had wonderful linens. The kitchen was nicely equipped. We especially enjoyed having the use of the beach chairs and cooler. In addition, it was nice having the parking garage to park our car (especially on a rainy day).
We looked at other condos on the property; however, this unit's location was ideal. We had a wonderful view of the ocean, as well as the quiet pool. Sitting on the lanai was very relaxing. The property has a variety of pools to meet everyone's needs. It was great having Duke's Restaurant on the property too - delicious food and great views. The beach is very accessible too. You also need to try the beach walkway - it goes all the way to Whaler's Village.
Also, something that was really nice is that the fridge and cupboards had some basic essentials (from other visitors). It was nice knowing that we didn't have to buy everything and it was also nice that we could pay it forward by leaving some things we didn't use.
There are lots of great stores nearby. While there is a grocery store across from the property, the Foodland Store in Lahaina is pretty good. If you sign up for My Rewards (no charge), your grocery bill will be cheaper.
Some great new restaurant finds for us were Miso Phat Sushi on Honoapiilani Highway and Aloha Mixed Plate - both have great food for reasonable prices. If you want to try a fine dining experience, Merriman's in Kapalua is wonderful (try the filet). In Lahaina Pacific'o Restaurant, Mala, Honu and Lahaina Grill are equally fabulous!
Maui has some wonderful beaches to check out; however, we spent a lot of great places up country. Wake up early to see the sunrise on Haleakala. Be prepared for cooler temperatures - it was 41 degrees when we went up! We brought coats, jeans, clothes and hats. Check out the road to Hana and check out Iao Valley State Park. There is a great little rustic town called Makawao that has great shops and galleries.
We loved having the "best studio" at Honua Kai for our home base!
My wife and I stayed in unit 531 in the Konea tower in early January of 2016. We have previously been to Hawaii, but never to Maui. We were looking for resort style accommodations on the ocean. We also wanted a kitchen so we did not have to eat out every meal. We went with the studio setup after initially being interested in a 1 bedroom unit. It worked out nicely for my wife and I. The size of the unit was perfect for a couple. It had a wonderful full size kitchen that had all we needed. The appliances were high quality. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was large and had a nice soaking tub and large shower. But, without question the best feature of the unit was the large lanai with the huge folding doors that opened completely. An amazing ocean view. We would open the doors whenever we were in the unit. It was great to wake up to the sound of waves and birds chirping right outside our lanai. We were also blessed to be there during January and this of course meant that we were able to see whales easily from our lanai every day. Oh and the lanai was also a perfect place to watch beautiful Maui sunsets.
Regarding the resort, it was very well taken care of and just beautiful. Flowers, palm trees and ponds are found in between the properties multiple pools. The pools are great with warm, refreshing water. Cabanas to rent poolside as well. Plenty of sunshine to be found poolside. The restaurant serves drinks and food poolside. The resort also had what I will call a beach concierge hut which would get you set up to snorkel or scuba dive if you are interested. The restaurant on site is good and a beautiful location. Just past the resort is a very nice beach with pristine sand. A great snorkeling spot with a reef right off the coast. The resort ls location allows for loads of sunshine and hardly any rain. Close to shops and restaurants. We would stay here again in a heartbeat and fully plan on doing so.
INCREDIBLE!! We loved our stay! (Didn't want to leave.) Beautiful resort, magnificent ocean views, lovely condo with everything we needed and more! We loved opening up the folding glass doors, enjoying the gorgeous view, and listening to the birds sing while having our meals out on the lanai. The unit was clean, beautifully decorated, and had all the comforts of home. There are some amazing places to eat in the little strip mall just north of the resort, and the grocery store is just across the street. We were especially grateful to a former guest who left behind a copy of "Maui Revealed" since ours was at home on the dresser.
The owner, Barbara, was very kind, responsive, and patient. Although we arrived fairly late in the evening, the property manager willingly greeted us and gave a quick tour of the condo, showing us how things worked and where to find all the hidden gems - beach chairs, umbrella, washer/dryer, etc..
We truly can't imagine a better place to stay! It was a perfect launching point for all of our Maui adventures. We had a truly wonderful experience and hope to return soon!
Two Words HOLY COW! It was absolutely incredible staying in this amazing resort and even better room. I cant imagine a room having a better view than what this balcony offered us during our stay. We could actually see whales from our room splashing and playing around in the ocean. I still cant believe the price and how underpriced this room is for the value you get with it. All appliances were brand-new or art least seemed that way. The food in the area was out of this world. We loved Kimo's Ribs and everything else we tried there. We also really liked a place called Java-Jazz directly across the street from the report in the same shopping center as the grocery store. This is the most conveniently located resort, and room in all of Maui. You have to go to the bakery/restaurant Leodas I am not exactly sure about the spelling. Now back to the room. The room seemed much bigger than the said Sq Footage probably because the entire glass windows are actually sliding doors that open up the room to the balcony and make your front room seem like it is the beach right outside. The pools at this place are perfect for both a romantic getaway at the quiet reserved pool or for a family vacation with kids of all ages. The grills outside by the pool were never crowded and seemed very clean. If I could give 6 stars I would. I feel like I didn't pay these people enough money but I am ok with that because now I might be able to afford to go again sooner than one every 3 years. My wife is pregnant so she needed a quiet relaxing place and although this is a great place for kids there seemed to be more than enough room for everyone and she found tranquility anyways. The workout facility could definitely be bigger but it got the job done. This is coming from a man that is on a mission and has been for a year now to get in great shape once again in life. So I am sure most people would be just fine with it. Dukes is one of the local favorite places for tourists and locals alike to eat and it is located right at the resort. The beach right outside seemed a bit rocky but maybe if I had looked around enough I would have found a better area but the beach was good enough where I was and we still had a great time at it.
This condo was exactly as described - beautifully decorated and maintained, and located in a fabulous complex. It contained everything required for a comfortable stay and even included many extras such as beach chairs, beach umbrella and sufficient bathroom and cleaning supplies for the duration of our stay so we didn't need to purchase extra. The doors fully open out onto the lanai, creating extra space and a tranquil outlook onto the courtyard and ocean beyond. The condo owner was friendly and efficient in her communications, and always happy to answer any queries we had about nearby services and restaurants.
With Kaanapali Beach only steps away, we love to set up our Tommy Bahama beach chairs and umbrella and spend the afternoon watching for breaching whales while enjoying picture-perfect sunsets. A hidden gem is the Kaanapali Beachwalk, a boardwalk which originates in front of Honua Kai and stretches for over two miles along Kaanapali past Black Rock and the other resorts to the south. A great diversion for walkers is on the mauka (mountain) side where the former pineapple fields are now planted with coffee and stretch up to the West Maui Forest Reserve. We also love an occasional drive on the narrow road that leads around the backside of West Maui. We always stop at the bright green Julia's Banana Bread in Kahakuloa for a tasty treat. Remember that this drive is on 'island time' and is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. The backside of West Maui also has some great hikes through tropical forests. If you park for a side excursion, be sure to leave your car unlocked and a window cracked so the locals know not to be curious. Ok, last tip and then a recommendation. While on island, we try to make multiple stops for shave ice in Lahaina at Local Boys. The shop is right across from the famous banyan tree and, with Roselani ice cream in the bottom and flavored ice heaped high, the shave ice treat is ONOLICIOUS! With so much to do on Maui, we recommend that you read 'Maui Revealed.' It is the best guidebook that we have found for both well-traveled and little-known attractions on Maui. So much to do, so little time. Or, just indulge yourself and kick back at our beautiful Honua Kai resort! It's all good!
