Why Kim or David chose Puako

It's just that Puako is such a rare and special place and to have a chance to Live Work and Play in this area for many years now, We count our blessings, Mahalo David & Kim

What makes this cottage unique

Other than LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION, I would say;The fact that the property had an original !940's Beach cottage which was worth saving and we wanted to continue giving folks a chance to enjoy this incredible area and in the style of an earlier Hawaii that helped to make this a special choice for us Mahalo David & Kim

Peaceful Comfortable and Lots of Turtles!!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was exactly what I was hoping for our week long vacation. Dave was so very welcoming and met us at the cottage and showed us the ins and out of the property. He had everything available to us we could possibly need to enjoy the beach! Boogie boards, snorkels, masks, chairs, umbrellas, coolers! The house itself was very comfortable. To be honest, the bed we slept in was the most comfortable bed outside of my own! The house didn’t feel like a rental, it felt very welcoming. The furnishings were very tastefully chosen and I could tell that a lot of thought went into the flow of the home. Dave offered us the use of air conditioning, but I’m really not a fan so we declined. There are ceiling fans in each room and one on the back lanai. We were very comfortable without the air conditioning. The kitchen was very well equipped. There were beach bike available for us to use and we rode them to the shops as well as Beach 69! There were many sunsets spent watching the sea turtles beach themselves in a tide pool 4 minutes walk from the house! This was truly amazing! I give this place high marks and would love to return on our next visit to the Big Island! Thank you Dave for being such a great host.

A few really good days to remember

  • 5 of 5

Mike and I were fortunate enough to have stayed with David and Kim in Puako. We often choose to stay at properties listed on Home Away and this cottage was by far the best equipped we have experienced. It was also very clean and comfortable, everything you could want to relax is provided. David was an absolutely great host. Think southern charm and hospitality in Hawaii. Once you meet David you will understand. So, great place to stay, would definitely recommend this cottage to any interested in visiting the Big Island of Hawaii, but not interested in the crowds. Oh, BTW, on our first night we were lucky enough to walk on the beach across the street and find 27 sleeping sea turtles. David will certainly help you find them. Enjoy!!!!

Wonderful stay in paradise..

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 Spent a week at this cozy beach cottage...great location away from the resorts...snorkeling right across the street was the best on the has everything you need for the beach! Chairs, towels, cooler bags..etc. close to the best beaches! So many turtles to see at night resting in the rocks...we counted 21 one night.

Limes picked right off the tree were delicious in our drinks!

Thank you for a great stay!

Great house, within walking distance of beach.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this cute vintage beach cottage! The Puako location is one of the best on the island. We were able to walk to a handful of snorkeling locations and access others that were only a short drive from the house. We could walk to the resorts south of the Puako house to view petroglyphs or buy groceries, if needed. The house itself has been really nicely redone and is well taken care of, doesn't feel like it was built in the1940's. David was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the the area. We did pay extra for the air conditioning and it was worth it. We will definitely be back and plan on staying here again.

Perfect for the family and childhood memories

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at this lovely cottage for 8 nights and loved every minute of it. We have 2 tween boys and the cottage was the perfect size for us and had everything we needed. We usually go out to eat once in a while on vacation but this time we opted to cook all our meals here! David greeted us when we arrived and gave us a quick tour and was such a wonderful host - he even chopped open a coconut for us! The property is nicely landscaped and has herbs in the front for cooking. The bikes came in handy to make a quick trip for supplies at the Puako General Store or the Mauna Lani Foodland via the beach trail, and the snorkel gear and boogie boards were great for the kids to use at the beach.

Puako has a special place in my heart because I grew up on the other side of the island and my parents would take me here to enjoy the quiet beaches and tidal pools. I was happy to have my sons experience the same peace and beauty of the island while staying here. Mahalo for your hospitality and we hope to be back soon!

Puako is the only ocean side residential community on the Kohala Coast. It is still a well kept secret of original cottages and large estate homes nestled on the coastline where all of the major 5 star resorts have been built. Small beaches and petroglyph field within walking distance. Sheltered reef for snorkeling, shore diving, swimming, under water photography.
