Bufflehead Beach Cottage is located on Vashon Island—the heart of Puget Sound—where rural lifestyles and natural wonders coexist a short ferry ride from urban pleasures in Seattle and Tacoma. Our cottage is located on Shawnee Beach--one of Vashon’s most pleasant shores--and a traditional Native American harvesting and camping beach, rich in wildlife and views of the Sound and Mt. Rainier. County bus lines connect with downtown Seattle (foot or car ferries) and SeaTac Int’l. Airport.
Our beachfront home has an intimate contact with the water at high tide—hear the waves from the great room and feel the spray on the porch during winter storms; and low tide brings miles of beachcombing! The gently sloping shore is an invitation to swim, paddle, fly kites, send the kids out with pails and shovels…Kayaks and paddleboards can be rented at nearby Jensen Pt.; and fishing, clamming, and crabbing are possible in season.
Vashon Island hosts a vibrant arts & crafts community and over 15 restaurants and cafes. Our major stores (and restaurants) are 5 miles away (“uptown”), though we have an excellent espresso shop (NY Times 2012) and a old-timey grocery store within walking distance (quaint little town of Burton). Bicycling and walking on both roads and the Island’s extensive nature trails, bird-watching (Quartermaster Harbor is an Audubon hot spot), antique and second-hand stores, artist studios and galleries, cinema and local live theater, live music “uptown”, and abundant farmstands, --can fill your days when you tear yourself away from a comfy beach-front seat on our porch. Neighborhood walks on quiet back roads, or along the shorefront road to Burton, round out your vacation days.
Our freshly renovated cottage has three exterior porches, flower gardens, and a beautiful brick walk past heirloom apple trees. A cozy private bedroom with a hand-crafted queen-size bed and (the very best) sleeper sofa in the living room can sleep up to 4 persons. The kitchen is fully equipped for family dining. We have flatscreen cable tv, broadband wi-fi and a collection of movies on dvd. The library is stocked with nature guides, and a broad selection of literature and popular fiction. The light-drenched great room has a wood-stove and double French doors overlooking the beach—only 30 feet away.

Love at first sight--childhood beach memories reborn.
What a lovely little place right on the beach. It was a perfect getaway for us, with beach walks, visit to the Lighthouse, and cozy meals with an amazing view. Wish we could have stayed longer!
I arrived thru the gate..at once I knew that I would resonate with the space..sweet gardens, brick paths...wide paned glass doors into this sweet cottage on the Sound. Altho, not modern, every comfort was provided...efficient wall heaters, cozy wood stove, great linens, dishes galore...plenty of living space.. View to the water was fantastic...birds everywhere... We ate in town each day @ The Hardware Store.(yum). and cooked dinner every night...again..plenty of cooking utensils..pot/pans etc. An unexpected extra... I felt that I was in Christina's Home....her artwork lines the walls..beautiful! I will be back asap......Johanna Regan, Occidental, Ca.
The cottage was very cute and the view of the bay was wonderful. We had some dramatic weather that came up while we were there and the owners helped make us as safe and comfortable at the cottage and eventually ended up finding another place for us to stay when the weather promised to be dangerous. Great experience1
Beautiful cottage. Quiet, and soothing having coffee watching the seals early in the morning. The sofa bed was incredibly comfortable. Everything needed for a relaxing stay. Highly recommended!
We had a wonderful stay at the Bufflehead Cottage, highly recommend it. As advertised, the cottage is small but very comfortable and beautifully laid out. We are a family of four with 2 boys under the age of 6 -- they shared the bedroom and we slept on the pull-out sofa bed (which is very high quality and super comfortable). It was so relaxing to sit on the porch and listen to the waves and birds, and our boys played all day on the beach. Although we never met Christina, she texted us to make sure we were settled in and to ask if there was anything we needed -- very attentive while giving us our space and privacy. The cottage was spotless and the owner thought of everything, from extra towels just for the beach, to a fully equipped kitchen with coffee and tea and spices, to a whole collection of DVDs and novels (which we didn't have time for because we were having too much fun outside). Even some games and toys for the kids. The cottage is only a mile from the Burton store (if you forget any supplies), and very close to the Burton peninsula forest trails and Jensen Point boathouse, where you can rent kayaks and paddle-boards. We thoroughly enjoyed the locally-roasted coffee and homemade ice-cream from the Vashon Roasterie. A beautiful, peaceful getaway!
