Made for an "interesting" Vacation

  • 3 of 5

My Wife and I haven't been on Vacation for a very long time and since it was our 4 year anniversary, we decided to get away. We arrived late at night after work and the parking situation was the first issue. I saw a few different options that could accomodate parking, but they had us park behing the cottage. Driving a larger SUV (Honda Pilot), I had to let me wife out and park as close as possible to the building so my tail end wasn't sticking out in the road. I was still partially in the road, so I just hoped noone came flying by and didnt move over. The cottage seemed very nice and had a great deck with seating. When entering the cottage though there was a slight smell (this could have just been dampness since it was raining all day and night). When we went to brush our teeth, the water in the bathroom had a terrible sulfer smell. We then brushed our teeth in the kitchen and went to bed. In the morning, the smell was still in the bathroom sink and shower. After letting it run for a while, the smell was still there and made the whole cottage almost unbearable to be in. We decided to call and left for breakfast and some hiking in Watkins Glen (Quick, easy drive from the cottage). When we got back around lunch, we checked the water and it still smelled awful. We called management again and the reassured us that it should be fine since the came and changed the filter. Totally unacceptable since we couldn't even shower to do anything else with our stay. We decided to leave the cottage and wanted a refund. We really felt like we were entitled to a full refund, but they only gave us a partial refund. Glad they decided to refund part of the stay, but we were really dissappointed in the entire stay. We ended up getting a hotel room that was a third the cost of one night stay in the cottage. Ended up saving our weekend, but still left a sour taste in our mouth. We will definitely return to the finger lakes, but going to stay FAR away from cottages from now on. Hopefully this helps some people question booking this. Save time, money and aggravation and book at a B&B or local Hotel. Cottage had a lot of potential, but really left us down. Still giving the cottage 3 stars since dealing with the management was a "relatively" painless process even though they only gave us a partial refund.

Owner's Response: Chris booked his vacation with us Columbus Day weekend. First of all, I encourage guests to take this review in light of all the other reviews left by our other guests. We strive to do our best to maintain a positive customer experience, and we take guest complaints very seriously. In all the years we have been renting this cottage, this is the first time we have ever had a guest complain about the sulfur smell. When the guests contacted us and told us there was a sulfur smell, we sent someone down there the same morning to change the water sediment filter. There was a sulfur smell, but it was greatly alleviated after the filter was changed. As was mentioned before, we have never before had a guest complain of sulfur water at this rental. While it may be annoying, sulfur water is not unsafe for human consumption. Sulfur can be removed from water, but it requires a specialized water treatment system to ensure that it is removed correctly. Since this home has never had a history of sulfur water, there was no practical need for such a system to be installed at the rental. The guests were still unhappy about their vacation and decided not to stay the remaining night of their reservation. We gave them a refund for the night they did not stay at the cottage, as well as a 35% refund for the night they did stay. Given the circumstances, we did the best we could to correct the situation in a satisfactory manner. Chris, I hope that, even though you had an unpleasant experience, you will still consider renting again on Seneca Lake. Thomas Lapp Group LLC

Awesome Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I decided to take a long weekend in the Finger Lakes as a relaxing getaway when we were short on vacation time and couldn't pull off a full week somewhere. We had one of the best vacations we have shared together, in part due to the Cozy Cottage. The view from the deck is awesome and we loved eating our breakfast outside each morning admiring the lake. The cottage itself is small, but really all you need for 2 people, no complaints whatsoever. The dirt road seemed intimidating, but my small car had no problems with it (despite others stating 4 wheel drive may be necessary, don't worry!). The cabin had everything we needed and is located right off the main road/wine trail, which made going to and from wineries easy. And the owner seems like a truly great guy - my wife and I accidentally locked ourselves out of the cabin at 10 PM, and Austin was kind enough to promptly meet us with a spare, can't express how thankful we were! All in all we had a great time and would love to return. I would absolutely recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a quiet getaway in a beautiful setting.

Nice little bungalow

  • 4 of 5

Bugalow was as described. The access road is an adventure! The listing said 4 x 4 vehicle ideal which we did not have but slowly you can manage the road slowly. Loved being in the thick of the woods. View from the deck - fabulous!! The high top chairs and table - I could just sit there all day and look out onto the lake. The bungalow, nothing special - clean, certainly what you need for a stay including kitchen appliances. Photo's are an accurate description of the property. I would recommend the cabin. Works for 2 people but no more. Would stay again.

My husband and I enjoyed the view of the lake. We spent a lot of time on the porch(which was just beautiful) and the dock. The cabin was very cozy and very clean. We especially enjoyed all the paintings that reminded us of God's goodness and the little devotional book by the bedside. The only drawback might be the bumpy and hilly private driveway you have to take to get to cottage. All in all we really enjoyed our stay.

Cozy Cottage Review

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was very nice. Clean, maintained well stocked and spacious. The new deck and furniture made the beautiful view of Lake Seneca a great experience. The photos accurately reflect the features of the cabin. The lower area by the lake was difficult to access as the steps were very steep and some what overgrown. However, the large deck at the cabin had a beautiful lake view and made up for the lake access. I would use this cabin again!

Day at the Lake

  • 5 of 5

We loved our short stay at the lake. It is an incredible view over the lake and the cottage is awesome. It was comfortable and very cozy. It is a wonderful place to just "get away". Austin and Grace were very accomadating. We even lost our keys and didnt realize it until 10:00pm that night. Austin came out and hand delivered a new key to us. Would recommend this cottage to everyone
