About Lori or Darren Mort

We are a humble couple with 4 adult children (2 in and 2 out of college). My husband and I ventured to this beautiful part of the state and fell in love with this area. After two+ years of remodeling and tweaking we're ready to share all of the fun we've had as a family with others who wish to do the same. We currently live mid-state and both are teachers.

Lori or Darren Mort purchased this house in 2003

Why Lori or Darren Mort chose Northern Michigan

Besides the spacious, comfortable living quarters with all the amenities you could want, the river really caught our attention because it is wide with a current that allows you to relax for a smooth ride whether you are canoeing, rafting, swimming, etc. This is also a designated trout stream area. The various trails are exciting and well manicured for quads, snowmobiles, motorcycles and horses. Most trail heads are within one mile from this property. So it makes for a fun stay no matter what the season happens to be!

What makes this house unique

Whether it's for one couple or quite a few with their families, this large 5 bedroom home has up and down decks with swing, picnic table, and patio furniture. There is a large fire ring out back with plenty of yard to play your favorite yard games. Bocce ball, croquet, volleyball and croquet gulf have been enjoyed. Back decks face the National Huron Forest. So much to do and see! If you need down time--it's here! If you are the active type, there are so many choices! Ideal location with 9 river inputs from Mio. Hence, the river rides can last from 1/2 hr. to 7+ hours long. Single or Small groups certainly can afford this type of fun!

Return Trip To The Mort Property For Our Annual Tubing Trip.

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our annual tubing on the Ausable River July 8-11. This was our second year renting this wonderful property. Everyone had a blast again this year. There is something for everyone to do at this property. We spent a lot of time at the pool table and on the back porch this year. We even got to meet Lori and Darren in person this year. I would highly recommend this property to anyone traveling to the Mio area. Thanks again to the Mort's for sharing their wonderful home with us.

Very Nice Bow Hunting Camp

  • 4 of 5

My brothers and I, as well as a cousin, have a deer camp each Fall somewhere in Michigan. We are public land hunters and chose the MIO area this year. I was in charge of finding a roomy place as we had several nephews and some friends visiting for part of the time. The Mort's place was perfect for our needs. Everyone commented on how big it was. We love to cook so the huge kitchen was a bonus too. The fire-pit with the metal tripod was great. We cooked almost every night over a wood fire. We enjoyed squirrels, Elk and venison meals to name a few. It was super nice having a washer & dryer in the home as well as television to watch some football. We harvested a couple bucks from just a few miles away. The location is fairly remote but has a few close neighbors but they didn't bother us a bit. Make sure to check out the numerous scenic outlooks for the Ausable nearby--what beauty! Wild mushrooms were plentiful as well---found a good crop of Chicken of the Woods shrooms. Turkey were everywhere. Very minor suggestions for the Morts---sharpen the kitchen knives (most really dull--I actually sharpened a few. Buy a couple sets of new dish rags and towels the ones there were pretty pathetic, but other than these minor things what a great place!! The Morts were very responsive to any phone calls or e-mails throughout the process and promptly returned my deposit in full. We would definitely stay here again.

Roomy place to stay at

  • 4 of 5

This place was huge, we only had 8 people that made it. But loved the stay. We were barely there, only at night to sleep mainly. Will be booking this place again annually.

Great place for small or large gathering!

  • 5 of 5

We came here for our annual family tubing trip, group of about 20 people. Only 14 made it this year, but there was so much room the couples or families all got our own rooms. Previously we have always had to stay in separate cabins, till I found this diamond in the rough. We were all together and not all spread out in different places. Everyone in our group agrees this is the place for us. Thank You, Darren and Lori Mort for letting us share a piece of your up north getaway. Already booked for next year!!! See you next year

Annual Tubing Trip Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a nice long weekend tubing vacation down the Ausable River. We had a great time at the Mort house. Plenty of room in the yard, and very spacious indoors with enough sleeping arrangements for everyone. The house is very well maintained and full of all the extras you may need. Thanks again to the Mort's for a very memorable vacation..I would highly recommend this rental to anyone. And don't forget to sign the steps...
