About Lori or Darren Mort

We are a humble couple with 4 adult children (1 in and 3 out of college). My husband and I ventured to this beautiful part of the state and fell in love with this area. After two+ years of remodeling and tweaking we're ready to share all of the fun we've had as a family with others who wish to do the same. We currently live mid-state and both are retired teachers.

Lori or Darren Mort purchased this house in 2003

Why Lori or Darren Mort chose Northern Michigan

Besides the spacious, comfortable living quarters with all the amenities you could want, the river really caught our attention because it is wide with a current that allows you to relax for a smooth ride whether you are canoeing, rafting, tubing, fishing, swimming, etc. This is also a designated trout stream area. The various trails are exciting and well manicured for quads, snowmobiles, motorcycles and horses. Most trail heads are within one mile from this property. So it makes for a fun stay no matter what the season happens to be!

What makes this house unique

Whether it's for one couple or quite a few with their families, this large 5 bedroom home has up and down decks with swing, picnic table, and patio furniture. There is a large fire ring out back with plenty of yard to play your favorite yard games. Bocce ball, croquet, volleyball and croquet gulf have been enjoyed. Back decks face the National Huron Forest. So much to do and see! If you need down time--it's here! If you are the active type, there are so many choices! Ideal location with 9 river inputs from Mio. Hence, the river rides can last from 1/2 hr. to 7+ hours long. Single or Small groups certainly can afford this type of fun!

Best Deer Camp Ever!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year here, and will be back next year too. Plenty of beds and bathrooms for all our family members. The kitchen has all the appliances you need and more. Nice comfy living room with TV, and lots of movies to watch. The pool table out on the enclosed porch is a bonus. Love the firepit where we literally made dinner every evening. In fact we went through a cord of wood which we had delivered from a local. He actually came at 10:00 that night! Deer hunting was great. Our party got two bucks, and everyone seen deer every hunt, lots of bucks with nice racks were spotted this year, in fact the most we have ever seen in the last 16 years!

What a Place!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 12 found the Mort's cabin to rent for our annual canoe trip down the AuSable. We were all very happy with the house and location, and the use of the Mort's canoes. It was so nice to canoe on our schedule and not have to be tied down to a rental place. The weather had a few twists and turns, but the house had more than enough activities to keep us entertained (pool table, ping pong and foosball tables!!) Large rooms, kitchen and overall property made this a great place for larger groups. Thanks again Lori!!

This was our second time staying here. Great accomodations for our large group. Loved having the ping pong table and foosball table for the rainy day. So quiet and peaceful. Clean and room to roam.

What a Delight!

  • 5 of 5

This huge house with room to sleep up to 20 was an oasis between Grayling and Oscoda! We had 2 paddlers participating in the Au Sable Canoe Marathon and we needed a large house between the start and finish to make our home base to see the river, and have the families have a resting place during the race. The house was terrific! Clean and spacious with wonderful outdoor options to soak in the cool days and evenings! The kids were fond of having their own space upstairs with ping pong, puzzles and pool to choose from! They also could lounge around watching movies! We had a wonderful experience!
