About the property

Maison Guy & Cabanon Chadwick

Maison Guy was built in 2003. It is a spacious, family home designed for holiday life, set on a hillside with far reaching views. Our well-appointed single storey villa has 4 generous double bedrooms but can comfortably sleep up to 10 people when using the mezzanine. Spacious terraces for outdoor dining and a large private pool (11m by 5m), mean that you will soon slip into the lazy routine of a French summer. For a change of pace, it is only a 5 minute drive to the village restaurants and shops and the bustling coast is easily within reach.

Cabanon Chadwick was fully renovated and sympathetically extended in traditional Provencal style in 2002. As the name suggests this stone-built property was once a shepherd's cottage and is set amidst beautiful cork oaks and olive groves.

With shady terraces, an al fresco dining table by the famous sculptor Lyn Chadwick, its own 9m pool and even a boules pit, you will wonder where the days have gone! Full of charm and character, there is the master bedroom with a kingsize bed and ensuite bathroom plus another room with a kingsize bed (plus an additional single bed if required) and a twin bedroom. It is open-plan downstairs with a well equipped kitchen with a separate ding area plus and a large living area opening onto the terrace overlooking the pool.

The secluded location of each property will ensure the perfect private holiday. However, as the villas are only 100m apart and linked by a short path, a combined rental offers the ideal solution for those larger family or group gatherings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have stayed in both Maison Guy & Cabanon Chadwick every year over the past 7 summers and both are now very much a home away from home. We love the laid back private relaxation that both properties offer and have shared them both with family and friends, who have been similarly enthusiastic about their stays there. The layouts of both properties are great, easy to clean and have all the facilities you could want. The view back down the valley from Maison Guy is really spectacular in the evening, please don't let the trees grow too big to block this out. The properties and pools are well maintained and if you should have a problem, the local team are quickly on hand to sort it out (the pool at Maison Guy turned green overnight in late May one year due to a sudden drop of yellow pollen from the cork oaks, Phillipa & Becky were quickly on hand to get it sorted and normal service resumed the following day). La Garde Freinet itself is a delight with many interesting restaurants, shops and a great market on Sunday and Wednesday. It is the perfect spot away from the hubbub of the Cotes D'Azure if your preference is to get away for relaxation. There are good local beaches which are uncrowded, even in high summer, if you are prepared to explore and walk a bit. Our favorite is L'escalet about 35 minutes away. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend either property to anyone, our only reluctance being that recommendations lead to them becoming harder to book when we want to go! If we had one criticism, it would be about the size of the tree over the pool at Cabanon, which had got very big by last year and put the pool in shade for a good part of the day. If you want a shady spot, the covered terrace with its amazing concrete sculptural table is just the perfect spot to waste the day with a newspaper or book and several bottles of the perfectly chilled local rose! Every year we say we will try somewhere different, but we just get drawn back to where we know we will have a chilled out relaxing holiday in great properties in a stunning location.

An idyllic stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay in Maison Guy. The house is extremely well laid out and has great outdoor areas for dining, sun-bathing and lounging. The grounds are well-maintained, and some lovely old cork trees provide options for shade by the pool. The house is well equipped, with everything we needed for our stay, and Becky and Philippa, who clean the house once a week and maintain the pool, were a pleasure to deal with. The quaint village of La Garde-Freinet nearby is a lovely spot. It has all the facilities that one could want - a bi-weekly market, a fab wine shop, some cafes for people-watching, a few nice shops for browsing and adequate restaurants for lunch and dinner - without ever feeling too crowded. All in all, an idyllic stay.

Idyllic setting perfect for a family or group of friends or mixing of both as we did. Spotlessly clean and well maintained by Phillipa and Becky who are very helpful and friendly. Pool and facilities are excellent especially the showers!!! Only thing- Electrical appliances need updating- kettle, dishwasher and hob. Beautifully sunny ☀️ spots but a welcome shade can be found.

I spent a week at Maison Guy with my three daughters and son-in-law. What a stunning property! Fabulous facilities in a property that is in a wonderfully secluded and idyllic location, yet near to the village when essentials are required. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a peaceful vacation but with major towns and the coast nearby if preferred.

Fantastic Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing 10 days in Maison Guy - everything was perfect for two families. There were 11 of us and there was plenty of space for everyone.

The house is lovely with everything you could want for a relaxing holiday, great pool, table tennis and a large terrace with a fantastic view. We ate out a couple of times but actually it was such a beautiful place there was no need as it lends itself to having meals/barbeques on the terrace.

The kitchen is very well equipped and 3 showers meant there were no queues at peak times!!

The pool was cleaned regularly and everything was spotless when we arrived. It was as described and more.

The house is easily accessible by car to St Tropez, Port Grimaud, La Ramatuelle and Grimaud. It is also a lovely walk and cycle into La Garde Freinet.

Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely home - we will definitely be back!!

Provence is a region of vineyards, lavender, wild herbs and charming villages with terracotta-tiled roof-tops. Our two holiday homes sit within this idyllic landscape, whilst at the same time they are also just 15km from the glamorous bay of St Tropez. The excitement of the glittering coastline is a sharp contrast to the local village market and sun-soaked hills of olive trees - a stay at one of our villas means that you can experience the best of both worlds...Special interest holidays:

The Massif des Maures offer some superb cycling, we do have some bikes to hire at Maison Guy.

The Bay of St Tropez and its beaches are 12 km away.

The famous "Pamplonne" beach of St Tropez is approximately 30 minutes drive away.

There are always those adventurous souls who take an over-night ferry to Le Havre and arrive in the South of France within a day. We would suggest however, that if you want to drive, a morning crossing to Northern France, the motorway via Reims and an overnight stop (in Burgundy) makes for a pleasant journey. Alternatively, La Garde-Freinet is an easy 1½ hour’s drive from both Marseilles and Nice airports and 45 minutes from Toulon airport. Car hire is recommended.

Our homes are just a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk from the market village of La Garde-Freinet.

Further Details:

La Garde Freinet is a medieval town in the centre of the Massif des Maures. Picturesque roads winding through forests of cork oaks and chestnut groves reach the village where restaurants and shops surround the main square. We enjoy nothing more than to walk into the village in the morning to collect the freshly baked bread and croissants and browse around the market on a Wednesday and Sunday.

There are many places of interest to visit. Below are a few suggestions, but the possibilities are endless: Grimaud: an appealing village, flowered, winding streets lead to a feudal castle 15 mins. St Tropez: a lovely old port, home to the rich and famous 30 mins. Ste Maxime: less glamorous than St Tropez but equally great for soaking up the atmosphere 25 mins. Aix-en-Provence: reputedly the prettiest town in France 1 hour. St Paul de Vence: an old hilltop village 45 mins. Aquatica, Frejus: largest water fun park on the Côte d’Azur 45 mins). Monaco: the glitzy principality famous for the Grand prix and casino 2 hours. Gorges du Verdon: deepest gorges in Europe 2 hours.

Local activities around La Garde-Freinet and on the Côte d’Azur include: Hiking, Mountain biking, Boules, Tennis, Golf, Windsurfing, Water skiing, Paragliding, Sailing and Horse riding.
