About Chandy Gaub

Elaine and Arthur Jack Sackville-West IIII purchased the land in 1997. Jack is a retired Air Force engineer and an architect. He and Elaine designed both buildings. In 1999 they moved from their lake home and began building. BJ&R & Ray Bonney built the guesthouse weather tight while Elaine and Jack built the barn as storage for their household goods. While living in their travel trailer, they finished the guesthouse and shop. In 2001 Ray built the house weather tight. This time the used some subcontractors, but Jack designed and built the kitchen and oak cabinet and workstation to Elaine's specifications. Elaine created the stained glass. Together they built and enjoyed their home.

In 2004 they began the Knole Guesthouse Vacation Rental which operated until the summer of 2011. At this time they decided to downsize and move closer to family and friends and travel as much as possible. They named their home Knole House and the Guesthouse stayed a Knole Guesthouse.

The original Knole House is an English country house in the town of Seven Oaks in west Kent England. It is reputed to be a calendar house, having 365 rooms, 52 staircases, 12 entrances and 7 courtyards. The house was built between 1456 and 1486 and owned by King Henry VIII in 1538. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, in 1566 it came into the possession of her cousin Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset, whose descendants the Earl and Dukes of Dorset and Barons Sackville have lived there since 1603. Today the house is in the care of the National Trust but the Lord Sackville-West family still considers more than half the house as their home and they still own the gardens and surrounding estate. The house was pictured in the film, 'The Other Boleyn Girl'. In our entry hall is a picture of Knole House and brass rubbing of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn done by Elaine and Jack during their visit to England and Knole House in 1983 where they met Lord and Lady Sackville-West.

Reviewer Comments:

We rented both houses for a large family gathering. The guest house slept 6 comfortably. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything we could want. The house was very clean. The only thing that needed maintenance was the outdoor lighting. The light at the top of the stairs did not work consistently. This was our second stay and we plan to return.

Reviewer Comments:

Enjoyed the house, the location and the history. Very well appointed, with good quality and well planned kitchen stuff. We loved the decorative touches. We visited both parks in the area, as well as the beach and some wonderful local restaurants. Also visited Astoria and "The Column" which is a nice drive - about 20 minutes? - over a beautiful bridge. We will probably return, but would choose the big house which has more bedrooms and better views. We were unable to find bed linens for the two living room beds. Sheets we found did not fit. Blankets/quilts stored in closets need to be laundered. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, and will think about coming back to stay in the big house. It was difficult to use the DVD player in LR because inputs were blocked by the TV wall hanger. Manager was very responsive and brought a new DVD player, but the problem was blocked hookups.

Owner's Response: Hi Sandi, thank you so much for your feedback and the compliments on the house. People do love the distant view of the lighthouse from the Knole Guest House. We are so sorry about the DVD player. We will be adding instructions to simply unplug the HDMI from the cable box into the DVD player! The mounting rack did cover up the other inputs. On the other hand, people struggle with switching between inputs on the TV remote, so using just one input, and one cable, makes it very simple to watch DVDs or TV. As for bedding, as you mentioned we did have both sheets and bedding in the apartment, but going forward we will work to get fitted sheets for the full sized fold down sofas, and run all the bedding through the Seaview Laundromat machines. We appreciate the feedback and will make the changes shortly for future guests. Kathy-Bloomer Estates Management

Overall good. Some minor issues. Code for key and instructions on where, how, and when to get the key not part of email or attachments sent to me. There was a code required for movies rated more mature than PG-14, there was no wifi (missing cable connection between router and reciever)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, for future guests we had great correspondence during this stay, driving directions and lockbox codes are automatically attached and sent directly after the final payment is made, In some homes We gladly offer the option for parental controls as a curtesy to our guests with young children and while we do offer Wi-Fi in all of our homes we do clearly state that we can not guarantee 100% uptime due to our remote area and at times unpredictable weather.
