About the property

Barracca On The Bay is a secluded custom designed coastal vacation home on the East shore of the incredible Tomales Bay. It is the largest secluded shoreline vacation rental directly on Tomales Bay, and unlike other vacation homes is significantly distanced from the road noise of Hwy 1.

Panoramic western views of Tomales Bay and the Point Reyes National Seashore, fill the homes interior with an ever changing theater of waterfront vistas each season. Egrets, Herons, Pelicans, and seals are frequent visitors to the shoreline against a backdrop of the sparkling blue waters of the bay, and the untouched rolling hills of the Point Reyes beyond.

The lodge style home has aged cedar timbers vaulting all ceilings. Full redwood decks & panoramic windows capture western seashore, bay views, and magical sunsets. Barracca is a great private get away spot for a family, intimate reunions of friends, or couples seeking a very private romantic country retreat.

Several regular guests return frequently for 'inspirational solitude' & retreats as they compose new music, write, or capture the gorgeous environment for their art or photographic endeavors. Couples return for anniversaries and families return for new explorations of the many activities in the area and to create more cherished memories.

(Five star Rating in Northern California Romantic Getaways & featured in Sunset magazine)

After a day of coastal exploring, hiking, kayaking Tomales Bay, biking or just relaxing, return to a cozy fire at the shell & rock hearth, watch the sunset from the expansive decks, delight in creating a wonderful meal in the gourmet kitchen , barbecue fresh local seafood, meats or world famous fresh Hog Island Oysters brought in from just down the bay.

*Close the day with a soak in the spa under the cloak of the Milky Way. The secluded views, ambience, and private solitude, make Barracca a fantastic retreat for refreshing one's spirit and truly reconnecting with the sea and nature.

About Sandy

We purchased historical Barracca after scouring the California Coast for a unique waterfront property that provided; open water & landscape vistas, easy boat/kayak access, beautiful sunsets, and as 'Old California Coastal' character as we could find !

The original cabin and it's site have over a 100 year history too incredible to convey here! Safe to say we found the location, views and non touristy rural surroundings too captivating to leave. Steve, a residential Architect of estate custom homes in the SF Bay area designed and completely rebuilt the lodge style home. Retaining it's coastal lodge character and including a few of the antiques from the original home in the early 1900's while also upgrading all features: providing casual elegance and retreat amenities.

It has been a treasure to their family for multi-generation reunions, and also a refreshing change from the pace of life in the Bay Area.

Sandy purchased this house in 1983

Why Sandy chose Marshall

Barracca is on a very unique location for the Point Reyes & Tomales Bay area; unlike most other vacation rentals it is on its own private drive, waterfront, and secluded from the car noise of Hwy 1, which is at the back door of most other home rentals in the area.

Tomales Bay; this section of coast is one of the most untouched natural coastal areas within 1 hour of San Francisco. Unlike much of California it has changed very little in 60+ years!

We were charmed by the surrounding organic pasture lands of the Marin Hills & astounded at the ever-changing horizon over Tomales Bay each hour of the day, and each season of the year.

There was no larger waterfront parcel on the entire shoreline of Tomales bay with easy boating/kayaking access, nearby hiking, biking, or with such seclusion. Of course the miracle to us is this gem is only an easy 1 hour drive from San Francisco. ( AND, so few people seemed to know about it!)

Hiking out to Tomales Point past herds of Tule elk, biking rural roads, kayaking at sunset, sailing, fishing,or just lounging on the deck provide restoration of the soul for our hectic family life in the Bay area.

We are 'Foodies' at heart and you just can't beat the wonderful locally grown foods served at the numerous great restaurants nearby or sold at the markets in Pt Reyes Station.

One of our favorite things to do after a full day in the park or on Tomales Bay is to head over to Hog Island Oyster company ( few minutes drive) to buy a few dozen oysters, go to the local market for their great organic produce, local wines, fresh seafood and gourmet cheeses.....then head home to Barracca for a sunset BBQ......making S'amores.....then a soak in the spa under the stars !

For longer stays; day trips to Napa Valley, Russian River, San Francisco, or Bodega Bay are all possible........After owning Barracca site for over 25 years we are still discovering new hikes, and new adventures in the surrounding area. (And great dining too)

What makes this house unique

Our guests say our photos don't due the house justice. We'll work on that :~)

Barracca is graced with one of the largest secluded shore footage lots on the E. Shore of Tomales Bay while also being distanced enough from HWY 1 to ensure quiet, privacy & beautiful sunsets. Most other rental homes that are waterfront also have Hwy 1 at their back door: which means the contstant sounds of cars or motorcycles....not really a restful nature ambiance. The home also has a private generous front lawn, kayak or paddle board launch, and a relaxing hammoc

Barracca is equipped with everything you would need for gourmet cooking.

Once here the worries of the world seem to melt away with the changing tides and sky.

There is a small beach a short walk from our door. Kayak rentals and boat launches just down the road. Gourmet dining and quaint turn of the century western towns a short drive away.

Our guests and family often choose to never leave Barracca for their entire stay just to relax and enjoy viewing the Bay, wildlife, sea life and birds.

The location of Barracca lends itself to short drives to the north to Dillon Beach, Bodega Bay or the other charming rural towns and beaches of Sonoma. Day trips to Sonoma ,Healdsburg, Napa, and the wine country are entirely feasible as well. To the South is the quaint western town of Point Reyes Station, Bolinas & Inverness. Across the Tomales Bay by kayak or car are thousands of acres and miles of diverse hiking trails, horseback riding, a lighthouse to explore, and naturalist guided hikes from the Point Reyes Visitor Center at Bear Valley.

At Barracca the Great Room has a pretty full DVD & music selection as well as shelves of books, local hiking ,wildlife guides, a game & toy cabinet. There is also a connection dock for your MP3 or IPod at the stereo.

The deck has full western views for incredible sunsets, a picnic table for dining outside, and a new Jacuzzi tfor4-6, perfect for stargazing at the night sky!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have rented numerous homes in Inverness, Marshall, Dillon Beach and even Bodega. This home is by far our favorite. It's a very private location

with huge waters view that offer spectacular sunsets and enchanting mornings as the mist rises off the Waters of Tomales Bay.

It is a short drive to Hog Island Oysters where we can purchase our dozens of Sweet water oysters to BBQ and enjoy at Barracca, or we can walk or take another short jaunt to Nicks Cove for a fabulous dinner or brunch.

this home is equipt with everything you could possible desire in terms of kitchen supplies, a great outdoor spa, games, books, classic records, gret beds, and an endless array of beaches to explore, hikes to take in the seashore, and some of the best foodie experiences in the Bay area, let alone

the USA. This was our second time here and we are already booking another stay. This home is beautiful inside and out, great attention to detail and design. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Peaceful, beautiful, great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 8 loved our stay at Barracca! Check in was easy, directions for all house operations clear. This bright, spacious, clean home is thoughtfully appointed and well equipped: a large kitchen with great views outfitted for serious cooks, which we thoroughly enjoyed; a wood stove in the living area for chilly nights; books, toys and games for all ages; a telescope and binocs; and views, views, views! We spent most of our time outside roasting something on the grill (oysters and Hatch green chiles--a family tradition moved to this location this year). Took many walks down the private lane with the kids who enjoyed the little beach, and would end the day watching the night sky from the hot tub. Highlights: reserving a picnic table at Hog Island Oyster Co. to roast freshly caught oysters and see the processing of the day's harvest (you bring all you need--BYOB, tongs, charcoal, etc.); exploring the lovely town of Pt. Reyes with it's fully stocked grocery store, French bakery, cute children's playground, and exceptionally curated local bookstore; and motoring around the bay and circling "treasure island" in two rented fishing boats to watch harbor seals and pelicans sunning themselves on the sandy shore, followed by a fun docking at Nick's Cove for lunch. A few asides: Due to years of CA drought, the owners ask that you be mindful of your water usage. There is no bathtub in the house. None of this posed a problem. Our 3 -year-old granddaughter enjoyed her first shower there! Be careful driving along Hwy 1 at night. Deer and fawns may be startled by your approach and run across. We saw ten of them one evening alone, and a fox crossing the road the next morning. Cell phone coverage is spotty to no service at various points along the bay. At the house, we switched our phones to wifi which made it generally possible to make call. There is land line. We didn't use it. While one of our party used wifi through her computer to conduct calls for various business meetings without trouble, the rest of us were there to unplug and enjoy the experience of this unique welcoming house and unique bayside lifestyle. Thanks, Barbara, for sharing!

Peaceful bayfront luxury

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Barracca was lovely. When we first arrived, it was close to dusk and the bay was breathtaking. The water was calm and the sunlight was reflecting off its surface. There was a harbor seal swimming right in front of the yard, and my daughter was able to get a really close up look through the spotting telescope. The house is very well equipped with everything that you would need for a relaxing and luxurious stay. It is a very comfortable house for 8 people. The living room and dining room are very spacious and well laid out. We enjoyed many hours by the crackling fire in the living room, and also cooking, laughing and eating together in the kitchen and dining room. All very comfortable!

The kitchen is spacious, and well equipped. I enjoyed cooking in this kitchen a lot. Everything was clean and organized. And there is a beautiful view out the kitchen windows, over the deck looking over the bay. Quite lovely.

The home is situated at the end of a quiet little bay front lane, so there are no cars driving by. It is very private. Highway 1 is just above, but honestly I never heard any noise from it... so Barraca's proximity to Highway 1 is purely convenient.

I was delighted to find out that the little town of Tomales is located just about 10 minutes north, and Point Reyes is located about 20 minutes south. Barraca is private and away from everything, but conveniently located within a quick drive to a few small destinations. Most amazingly it was only 30 minutes to Highway 101 at Rohnert Park or Petaluma (whichever way you choose to drive). It seems light years away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, but is only just a short drive through the most amazing rolling hills of dairy farms.

I would definitely return to this beautiful house, we enjoyed ourselves immensely.

December stay

  • 5 of 5

Six of us (four adults and two children, ages 6 and 5) stayed at the house for four days in December. We took our chances with the weather, but it turned out to be crystal clear and even more beautiful than the pictures show. Everyone enjoyed the peace afforded by the house and the views. The kids never ran out of things to do…watching the water, finding shells on the beach, playing monopoly or looking at the stars so far away from the lights of civilization. A very restful experience for all.
