The Frequent Flyer from a Parent’s Perspective

If you’re like me, “family vacation” brings Chevy Chase and the Griswold’s to mind. Bored kids, an over-packed “family truckster” and expensive meals are just the beginning! I wanted to share why vacationing with my family at The Frequent Flyer takes the National Lampoon out of the equation and makes for not only great family fun but also a real vacation for me.

The ‘man cave’ (aka garage area) of The Frequent Flyer is packed with extras to keep everyone busy! From sand toys to bikes and Kayak’s to stand up paddleboards, the family will have plenty to do and you won’t have to pack, or worse rent, all of the toys that make life at the beach more fun. There are even beach chairs and beach umbrellas for the whole family!

From the best tanning deck on the house I can watch my kids play safely on the beach of the shallow-water Sound. They spend hours trying to catch hermit crabs and minnows while I catch up on my tan and favorite book.

Walkie-Talkies are available for the kids if they take a bike ride to the corner store so I can give them a little freedom but still keep in touch. And, the walkie-talkies work from the house to both the Ocean Beach and the Sound Beach for older kids.

The fully equipped kitchen means we can save a fortune on restaurant meals and my teenagers can eat their late night cereal and frozen pizza. We save buying the bulky but essential items such as napkins, tin foil, saran wrap, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies because the owner provides them as a convenience. And when you decide to eat out, the local restaurants are family friendly, reasonably priced and amazing.

The Frequent Flyer from a Watersport Enthusiast

The Frequent Flyer has a grassy 1 acre Soundfront lot, a perfect rigging area for every water sport. As a windsurfer and kiteboarder who has been coming to the Outer Banks for 30 years, there is no better Sound access on Hatteras Island. The winds from the S to NNE are ideal for kite and windsurf launching at the house. As winds go NE to SE, you can launch directly across the street on the Ocean side.

The house includes a ground floor enclosed ‘man cave’ plus a storage room for equipment. There are equipment racks outside for drying and inside to lock up at night. A half bath and two showers are outside under the house, in addition to a cleaning station with a utility sink and hose. We can clean up our gear so that it is ready the next day. Rigging, launching, and storing your gear is a breeze at the Frequent Flyer.

The ‘man cave’ also has a TV, small bar and a fridge which adds to the convenience factor. This house really caters to those who want access to the Sound and Ocean for watersports. When the wind is not blowing, the Frequent Flyer still delivers with 6 bikes for cruising the island, 3 kayaks, and 2 stand up paddle boards. And of course, no trip to Hatteras Island is complete without a visit to the local surf shops. Fortunately, Real Watersports, Kitty Hawk Kites, and other shops are all within a few miles.

The Frequent Flyer from a Fishing Perspective

Why settle for the Ocean or Sound when you can have them both! The Frequent Flyer is located on a very narrow segment of the island providing access to both Ocean and Sound fishing. If your target is inlet fishing, “Oregon Inlet” and the “New New Inlet” are just north of the Frequent Flyer.

Convenient storage areas make unloading and storing your gear simple. A deluxe, outdoor fish-cleaning table makes prep a breeze. Bring your casting net as bait can easily be caught along the shore of the Sound. If you prefer to buy bait, or need to update your fishing gear, several bait and tackle shops are just down the street including, Hatteras Jack.

Offshore Fishing Charters are available from nearby Oregon Inlet or head south to the Hatteras Inlet. The Frequent Flyer is a dream vacation spot for the avid fishing enthusiast and novices alike.

About Mark Haines

The Frequent Flyer was named after the owner’s favorite pastime (well, he would argue it is not a pastime but a lifestyle) kiteboarding, and the way he earned his kiteboard time: traveling more than 1.5 million miles by air, working for an engineering company.

An avid windsurfer from back in the early eighties, Mark started kiting in 2000 and quickly became an addict. He soon became a new type of Frequent Flyer, earning miles of airtime boosting, popping, jumping, and soaring over the Pamlico Sound.

Why Mark Haines chose Cape Hatteras

As his millions of Frequent Flyer miles dwindled, being used up on airfare from Cincinnati (CVG) to Norfolk (ORF), Mark realized it might be time to become a local in order to support his kite habit. In 2009, the family purchased the now Frequent Flyer. They hope that it is a fun vacation destination for families visiting the Outerbanks in the summer and a great spot for Kiters, especially Mark, in the windy off season.

What makes this house unique

As a windsurfer and kiteboarder who has been coming to the OUter Banks for 30 years, there is no better Sound access for rigging and launching on Hatteras Island than what the Frequent Flyer offers. The spot is a dream come true for Mark and Frequent Flyer guests.

Loved the house, perfectly stocked, all details well thought out, very comfortable. Had no idea we'd enjoy the outdoor showers so much:) had a wonderful time and highly recommend this house!

Wonderful Family Vacation

The home, layout and location is exactly as depicted on-line and met everyone's expectations. We were just a short walk to the ocean and having private sound access was great. We made use of all of the amenities and found everything to be well-maintained and CLEAN. A few very minor issues with two of the bikes, but nothing that couldn't have been easily resolved. Mark was beyond helpful with recommendations and prompt to answer any questions/concerns we had. He's also thoughtful in the way he keeps the house stocked, (and just an all around really nice guy to deal with). We were an extended family of 8, ranging in age from 23 to 60 and everyone enjoyed themselves and commented that they'd love to make a return trip.

Great vacation house!

This was our first experience staying south on the island as we usually head north on 12 to Carova or Swan beach in the 4x4 areas north or Corolla. We are long time OBX visitors, so we wanted to try something different this year. We were surprised at all of the beautiful open beaches and unpopulated land in between each of the villages going south. There are also 4x4 beaches to try out as well, which we were excited to find since that is what we love about the northern beaches. The location of the house is great, you get the best of both worlds in that the beautiful sound is right in front of you and the ocean beaches are just a short walk away. You can see the ocean from the house decks as well, but the view is definitely the sound and the sunsets! What I loved most about Frequent Flyer was the property itself, lots of room around the house, you're not crowded up against other homes, it feels open and spacious. There's a large, beautiful yard, and down at the sound there is a ton of wild life if you look closely. Having the kayaks and paddle boards was awesome, everyone enjoyed using them on the sound, and we loved watching the kite boarders, hopefully get to try it someday! The house itself was immaculate, one of the best homes we've stayed in while down there, you can tell that Mark cares greatly about his properties and takes the time to make sure they're well maintained. We were able to get in hours earlier than official check in time and Mark kept in touch through the week to make sure we didn't need anything. It was very nice dealing with an owner as opposed to a realtor for everything. Bedrooms were large, and it's a must have for everyone to have their own bathroom! The kitchen was well stocked, nice appliances, we cooked and ate in every night except for one. We basically had 8 adults, and there was plenty of room for everyone. If I had to make any recommendations at all, it would be to switch out the small fridge in the garage for a smaller full size fridge, we had lots of food! And the only other amenity that was missed that we've had in past homes was the hot tub, they're great for relaxing in when you come back from the beach! Awesome home, awesome location, definitely hope we get to come back again! Thanks Mark!

Family Vacation

Thanks Mark for a wonderful family vacation. Great location to the sound and beach. We enjoyed the kayaks, paddle boards and bikes everyday! There was plenty of room for everyone. The kitchen had everything you need to eat in...but also plenty of places to eat out! We loved watching the sunset from the deck. Our kids and grand kids are ready to come back!

Amazing vacation!

My family and I had the most wonderful time at Frequent Flyer last week. The house was perfect - clean, comfortable, well-stocked, absolutely no complaints. We cooked all of our meals, and the kitchen had everything we needed. Went out on the provided paddle boards and kayaks every night to watch the AMAZING sunsets over the sound. The walk to the beach is easy and short, just across the street. We would walk over in the mornings (beautiful sunrises over the ocean!) and at night, but chose to drive to the public access when we were hauling beach chairs and umbrellas. The public beach access is less than a 2 minute drive with plenty of parking, showers, and bathrooms. I would recommend the Frequent Flyer to any group and for any occasion! Great vacation home!

We had a wonderful time staying at the Frequent Flyer! All of the toys (aka kayaks, bikes, paddleboards) were in great condition! The owner has really thought of everything that you may possibly need including beach chairs, umbrellas, game of bags/ cornhole, and many more. The kitchen was very well stocked with equipment including a mixer, every pan imaginable and basically everything you'd need to make great meals! We have stayed at other rentals through VRBO and I can definitely say that this property has by far the most amenities of any that I've been to. Highly recommend!
