About Jim Florance
From left to right: Jim, Wes, Josie, Robin. Our family first visited Costa Rica in 2010 and fell in love with the Arenal area. Two years later, we spent our first week in the new house. We're in NJ most of the year. Jim is a marketing manager for an electronics company, Robin is an accountant. Wes is a senior in HS and Josie is a sophomore at URI.

Why Jim Florance chose La Fortuna
You'll hear many stories about people that visit Costa Rica and experience an epiphany or an awakening. That's what happened to us. We began searching for land in Aug 2010 and found the Old Ceiba Tree lot. A year after beginning construction, the house is nearly finished. There is an energy that one can feel when you are there; it's indescribable but undeniable. Once you experience it, you'll be going back over and over.
What makes this House unique
We designed the home to bring the outdoors and indoors together. There are floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors that open to lake and volacano views. The cool mountain breezes flow thoughout the home. The temperatures average about 75°F year round so no airconditioning is necessary. We get our pure crystal clear soft water from a mountain spring ('naciente') that is about 6km in the virgin cloud forest. At night the temperates typically drop about 10° and in December and January you might even need to put a fleece on to stay warm. Being on the edge of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, we get a lot of rain but if you wait an hour the weather will change and when the sun pops out be careful because you can get a sunburn even when the sky is overcast (ask Josie). Each room has a terrace facing the lake/volcano side of the house. We love to enjoy the unbelievable cooking of Emilce, the former owner of a restaurant in Fortuna (Vaca Muca). She has the ability to take just about anything that's in the refrigerator and turn it into a meal that you'll never forget. Our favorite is 'pescado al ajillo' (corbineta or tilapia filet sauteed in fresh garlic) served with home fries, mixed vegetables (be sure to ask for chaote, cauliflower and carrots) and 'patacas' (plantain chips). Be prepared to rise early to the sounds of howler monkeys that frequently spend the night in our guarumo tree (a favorite hangout for all kinds of monkeys and birds) or the cacaphony of our flock of loras (red-lored parrots) that reside in the remaining branches of the 500 year old giant Ceiba tree that has unfortunately reached the end of it's life but still stands majestically on the west edge of our property. It's a local landmark that can actually be seen in satellite photos. We have a hiking trail that connects to the Linda Vista Hotel that winds past the Ceiba and down through the forest. Another trail has been cut farther up the hill that leads all the way down to the river for a refreshing dip.

House is clean, pool is nice, make sure security lights and alarms are installed
Very remote house. Make sure there is a safe, security camera and alarm system before you arrive. Don’t go out at night. Keep all doors locked.
Beautiful home, lots of exquisite detail (the doors are works of art) and unobstructed view of the Arenal reservoir. Jim was a helpful and gracious host. Property is a bit remote and road up to the house is a tad steep/rough but that is a small price for the view. Highly recommend this property.
We had a great time and a quiet neighbourhood and close to la Fortuna yet far enough away for quiet times. The road to the house was a little rougher than I had imagined it wold be but never an issue to get to it
Brief but not disappointing
Our stay at Casa de Ceiba was abbreviated by Mother Nature who decided to throw consistent torrential downpours into the usual dry season. Had the weather cooperated, this property had just what we were looking for in our vacation - fabulous view, great outdoor seating areas, pool, and the ability to get away from it all while being close to numerous outdoor activities.
Jim was extremely responsive to all inquiries, provided lots of information to make us feel comfortable right from the start, including putting us in touch with his contacts for rental cars, really making this a no worries booking. We were greeted by Allan upon arrival and were shown around the property. He stayed long enough to answer all questions we had, and gave some recommendations for close by dining.
Do be aware, this is a 2.5 hour drive from the Liberia airport, though it realistically not that far away. The road is long, steep and curvy , to put it mildly, but again, the scenic views are fantastic as you drive along the lake. We did not use 4 wheel drive to get up the unpaved hill to the house - it is what one expects in Costa Rica. The weather made things interesting at times, but certainly not impassable.
If you want to be near the Arenal Volcano outdoor activities, but be away from it all at the same time, Jim's property makes perfect sense.
Casa Ciebo Get Away!
We spent a week at Casa Ciebo and enjoyed everything about our stay. The house is perfectly located with "million dollar" views and a great floor plan. We fell in love with El Castillo, it is a little off the beaten path yet convenient to everything. All of the owner suggestions were terrific and easily accessible. We had Emilce and her husband Louis prepare us meals at the house two nights and they were outstanding. I highly reccomend taking advantage this option. Alan the caretaker was both helpful and responsive. When we had flight issues and our friends had the rental car Alan arranged a driver for us so they didn't have to wait. Truly a memorable experience at Casa Ciebo and we would love to come back.
