Enjoy a weekend getaway or a week-long vacation in this one-of-a-kind Craftsman lodge home anytime of the year. Peace, tranquility, nature, escape! Nestled amid the Pinon pines Rocky Top is the perfect getaway for stressed out city dwellers - couples and families alike! You only need to pack your clothes and food as we supply all towels, linens, cooking supplies and more. Come discover the perfect mountain retreat!

**********************************************************************************

Our special amenities will make you feel welcome and at home from the moment you arrive - a basket full of treats - popcorn, hot cocoa, the makings for S'mores - plush bath towels, extra blankets and pillows, spa soaps, plenty of paper goods, and our local dining and activity guide book. Everything needed to make your stay enjoyable!

The 1800 sq ft 2-story Craftsman lodge-like home located at 5500' is beautifully furnished in Northwoods lodge style. Wildlife themed decor fills every room. Creative use of wood throughout the open floor plan contributes to it's warm ambience. Dual-paned windows provide comfort in all seasons. At night with all the lights aglow Rocky Top positively radiates warmth and beauty.

The 500 sq ft 2nd story main DECK with corner crow's nest benches, gas BBQ, gas firepit and hammock offers lovely views of San Emigdio mountain to the north and grand sunsets over Apache Saddle. With a lockable gate and wire screen overlay the deck is KID FRIENDLY. At ground level below the deck is a 6'x30' wire-enclosed dog run.

Beneath the knotty pine cathedral ceiling in the GREAT ROOM is a wall of glass offering beautiful pine and mountain views. The DINING ROOM with a large window looking through the pines to Apache Saddle seats 6-8 comfortably. An inviting stonewall corner fireplace climbs to the ceiling. Bear and deer stained glass windows hang above a unique curving stairway leading downstairs to 'the Attic'. Wildlife scroll saw artwork, handmade wall quilts, deer antler lamps, a faux bearskin, snowshoes, ski poles and two deer mounts complete the Northwoods theme.

A FULLY EQUIPPED KITCHEN with a 3-seat bar awaits your pleasure. Realtree camo dishes and deer antler flatware make every meal a special event.

You'll feel pampered in the spacious BATHROOM. A Kohler soaking tub (with shower), a wall of mirrors above the two basins, large dressing table, a welcome bear, chocolate and green plush cotton towels give the room a spa-like feel.

MALLARD'S RETREAT BEDROOM - has a Cal King bed, glider/rocker with ottoman, two spectacular stained glass windows above the bed (Mallard's of course!), ceiling fan, electric wall heater and ducks, ducks everywhere. Sliding glass doors open to a faux wood concrete patio with a table and two comfortable wicker rockers to sit under the pines, sip a glass of wine and watch the comings and goings at the bird feeder.

ANGLER'S REST BEDROOM - has two beds - a full and a twin - stacked like a bunk. (Sleeps 2-3); two rocking chairs with footstools and reading lamps; a 19'' LED flatscreen satellite TV with HDMI, USB; and a wall-mounted flip-up desk/worktable with oar legs suitable for writing or sewing. An electric wall heater keeps the room comfortable when temperatures drop. A portable crib and high chair are in the closet.

Downstairs the 600 sq ft 'BEAR'S ATTIC' is a combination DEN/GUEST ROOM with bears in abundance. (It probably should have been called a family room, but with all those bears we had no choice but to call it a DEN!!!) In the den is a slate top pool table with convertible ping pong table top; comfortable sofa and recliners; 40'' LED flatscreen with satellite TV; DVD and VHS players; a rustic drop-lid writing desk; two flip-up table tops on the wall beneath the window ledge convenient for writing, puzzles or sewing; an easily accessible SHOWER ROOM with tiled seats; and a LAUNDRY ROOM with washer/dryer. Cozy up with a good book from our library in the reading corner tucked beneath the stairway...and...be sure to visit our WILDLIFE RESCUE CORNER with over 30 inhabitants.

A beautiful Aspen log daybed with trundle (sleeps 2) in the GUESTROOM is easily closed off from the den for privacy via floor-to-ceiling draperies. A charming HALF BATH is close by. A Thelin Parlour pellet stove keeps the 'Bear's Attic' comfortable in winter.

We keep an 'odds and ends' assortment of sporting equipment for your use at Club facilities: fishing poles/net/bait, golf bag with mismatched golf clubs; croquet set; tennis racquets. Sorry, no bowling ball!!

In the winter we provide a snow disk for sledding and you are welcome to use the extra jackets, boots and gloves for adults/kids we keep at the lodge.

We are in a national forest with the ever-present danger of fire. There is NO smoking allowed on the property. Well-behaved pets are welcome for an additional charge. Guest are fully responsible for any damages. A large kennel and a dog run are provided for your convenience and the safety of your pet.

With Northwoods Lodge furnishings; two large bedrooms (one with a King bed, one with a full bed/twin bed bunk); den with twin daybed and trundle (can be used as a King); 2 extra twin air mattresses; portable crib and high chair; large luxury bathroom; one half-bath with separate tiled shower room; large rock fireplace; pellet stove; large deck with BBQ, firepit, hammock. Rustic outdoor seating. Large well-equipped kitchen. Stunning stained glass windows. A full-size slate top pool table, satellite TV, 40'' and 19'' LED flatscreen TVs for viewing selections from the 250+ video library, CD library, DVD, VCR and CD players, wifi internet connection for viewing emails (ethernet cord also provided), books, board games, puzzles, cards and poker chips, telescope, binoculars and bird ID book, seed for the many bird feeders.

Rocky Top Lodge PMC offers delightful and fun-filled, relaxing days and nights. Recreation opportunities abound. At different seasons you can hike, bike, play in the snow, swim, play tennis, golf on our PGA 9-hole course, catch-and-release fish at beautiful Fern's Lake, or shoot a few hoops on the court. Lampkin Park offers a lovely playground for family enjoyment. Visit the clubhouse with a golf Pro Shop, community swimming pool, tennis courts; recreation room with video games, etc., free Wi Fi, Condor Lounge providing live entertainment on weekends, outdoor concerts during the summer and an upscale restaurant. Guest cards are required for use of facilities (4 provided with rental).

A Village Center with a market, retail stores, great restaurants, a pub, fitness center, hair salon, US Post Office, and more offers convenience in an Alpine setting.

Special events such as the Lilac Festival, Mountain Shakespeare Festival, Run to the Pines Car Show, Wine Festivals and fairs take place at various times during the year.

Well paved roads make it an easy drive from the I-5 to Pine Mountain. The roads in this private community are well maintained by the Club. However, at a mile high altitude, weather can change quickly in the mountains so CHAINS and/or a 4WD would be necessary in winter.

Endless trails, abundant wildlife and clear skies make Pine Mountain Club a little slice of paradise. Sip your morning coffee on the deck or drink your evening wine while gazing up into the star-filled night sky. Enjoy a stay at Pine Mountain Club. Rest, renew and be rejuvenated in our one-of-a-kind ROCKY TOP mountain retreat in the pines!!!

AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE YOU WILL FEEL THE PEACE SETTLE OVER YOU LIKE A COMFORTABLE BLANKET!!!

* BED and bring your own BREAKFAST - A phrase that popped into our heads early one morning driving up the mountain. Indeed! Why rent a single room when you can bring your own breakfast (or better yet try those fabulous waffles at Basecamp Cafe) and enjoy the whole house!!!

About Richard and Linda

RICHARD (a 'can-do' kind of guy) and LINDA (a creative perfectionist) - owners.

We designed and constructed this unique 2-level Craftsman lodge-like home ourselves. Every rock, board and shingle was chosen and placed with our own hands. The rocks and boulders had to be dug out for the foundation. We even had to blast a 'ledge' (translation: rock as big as the mountain!) to pour the lower floor concrete. You can see why we christened it 'Rocky Top'. We had planned to make this our home, but family obligations delayed our plans. After years of being leased-out (even sold once and then reclaimed!) we have renovated, decorated and restored this gem to share with you. Like many people Linda, an avid interior decorator, dreamed of owning a B&B. This is probably as close as she will get. Our family and friends traveled up from the Los Angeles area a few days every week for a year to work on this restoration. Richard, now a retired general contractor, turned the business over to our son who did the heavy lifting and electrical. Our neighbor, a retired plumber, graciously gave many hours to the project. Linda had great fun pulling the parts and pieces together. The talents of family members are showcased in the many custom artworks and stained glass windows throughout the lodge.

Richard and Linda purchased this cabin in 1978

Why Richard and Linda chose Central Coast California

Few people knew about Pine Mountain Club in 1972. We saw a television ad. Tennaco was developing the land. Mil Potrero was as yet unpaved. No signs, no guardrails, no nothing! We were young, still newlyweds after only four years and dreaming of getting away from city life. We fell in love with the area and purchased a lot across the sreet. LInda's parents helped us build. We worked for three years constructing layer upon layer. It was our dream home. We planned to all retire there together. But then tragedy struck. Linda's dad had a stroke and our beautiful structure was NOT handicap accessible. So.....we sold our dear creation, purchased another lot (Rocky Top) and started again. It's not visible from the towering front, but the back bedroom starts at ground level. Everyone got to enjoy the beautiful mountains for a few years before the mile-high altitude proved too much for an elderly heart. Rocky Top was then leased out. We missed it terribly and no one cared for it as lovingly as we had. Then a terrible storm blew through in March 2011. We came up the mountain for the first time in many years, saw our beloved Rocky Top and decided then and there to reclaim it. We've had a grand time!!! And now we're ready to share our joy with you.

So, why do we call it a LODGE? 'Cabin' just didn't fit it's character. By definition a 'Lodge' is a country house 'occupied in season for sports' - hunting, fishing, skiing, swimming, tennis, golf, birdwatching, star gazing, reading, relaxing, deep breathing!!! (all sanctioned sports at Pine Mountain Club!!!)...we just had to call it a LODGE!!!

What makes this cabin unique

ROCKY TOP feels like a world away tucked into the middle of the forest. All told we've probably spent the best years of our lives constructing, furnishing and landscaping this dream property...while having the times of our lives!!! We invite you to come enjoy the clear blue skies, clean fresh air and the thrill of sighting the occasional Condor soaring high overhead. In spring stroll down our wooded path and smell the fragrant lilacs. Sit in the log swing and listen to the wind whisper in the pines. A few days on the mountain is more restful for us than a two-week vacation. We're sure it will be the same for you. Come on up to ROCKY TOP - we'd love to share our dream-come-true with you!!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved the cabin. It was so warm and inviting with all the special details. we loved feeding the birds and squirrels, playing games, baking cookies and just enjoying nature in a first rate environment. We would love to come back when there is snow.

We enjoyed meeting Linda. She was very pleasant and made us feel very comfortable.

WE JUST LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is just filled with wild life and feels like you are deep in the forest. The bears, deer, moose, fish and ducks create a wonderful

decor that bring you into a delightful mountain environment with the most loving touch of details. This place is really unbelievable and should be enjoyed by anyone who wants a relaxing higher elevation experience. The outside wild life is also a treat to watch.

We treat this place like our very own home, with care and conscious behavior. We look out on the mountain range and are refreshed in the

view. We breathe in such wondrous smells that we are invigorated every time we stay here.

The owners Linda and Felicity have been nothing but excellent in their treatment of us and always making sure that we have everything we

may need to enjoy their beautiful cabin.

We look forward to staying here again, and again and again....

PS: My husband and son just love the pool table and couldn't stop playing!!

Many thanks, Deborah, Daniel and Devin

Awesome Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this wonderful home in the mountains, 8/3/16 for 3 nights. The pictures here don't do it justice, and the owners were easy to work with. The home was very clean, and well maintained. We had 3 teenage girls, and a 4 year old with us, and they absolutely didn't want to leave to continue on up the coast for the rest of our vacation. They wanted to stay here the entire time, and we did too. There is plenty of room for everyone, and beds were comfortable. The 2 younger ones loved the bunk beds. The only problem was deciding who got to sleep on the top. LOL! If we come back to California, we will definitely book this place for the entire week.

Thank you for a wonderful beginning to our visit to California!!!!

Oasis in the midst of a national forest

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a tremendous time staying at the "Rocky Top." The whole Pine Mountain community is quite an unexpected oasis in the midst of a national forest. A small town complete with most every amenity you'll need--including gas, groceries, restaurants, a local swimming pool and mini-gym. An adult might find the decor of the "lodge" a bit over the top, but our kids particularly were taken with the nature decor of the house, the stuffed animals and the games. They also loved going to the pool in "town." A pleasant surprise was driving up two local mountains. Our family had a small cookout on the campground sites on one of the mountain tops. One other thing to note is that the "lodge" is in the midst of a neighborhood with neighbors as close as your current neighbor. So, don't think wilderness isolation. However, we saw none of the neighbors while we were there and we found the trade-off of convenience worth the price of greater isolation. We stayed at the lodge during what might have been some of the hottest days of the year to that point, but we found the whole house fan enough to overcome the 1-2 hours of being a bit warm without AC. Linda and Felicity were very responsive in communication and very helpful. Overall we'd highly recommend a stay in Pine Mountain and at the "Rocky Top."

Family Fun

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Rocky Top and we had a great time...again! We had four kids with us ages 2-5. The cabin is by far the most kid-friendly VRBO I have ever stayed at. It is loaded with toys and games and the decor is magical for the little ones. We had plenty of room and cooked all our meals at home. This is a great destination for the family!

Great stay in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic place! The decorations are perfect and you instantly feel like you are at a mountain retreat. Felicity was great and explaining everything and answering questions. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. We stayed in Feb and it was just a short drive to Mt. Pinos for some snow. We would love to visit again.
