Affordable Family & Pet Friendly Vacation Cottage, Silver Mountain

Space 1,069 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

3 bedroom, 1-1/2 bath w/ mountain view, 6 blocks to Trail-of-the-Coeur d'Alenes

After a day of fun in the Silver Valley of Northern Idaho, who wants to be cooped up in a tiny, overpriced hotel room?

What you want is the affordable comfort and privacy of the nicely furnished Birdsong Vacation Cottage in the heart of the Silver Valley. Romp and play with your dog in the roomy fenced in back yard.

With 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths, a full kitchen, living room and basement, The Birdsong Cottage offers you and your guests the clean, quiet, affordable comfort that you are looking for.

Both bedrooms on the main floor feature comfortable queen size beds. The third bedroom on the 2nd floor has a bunk bed with a comfortable double size mattress on the bottom and a twin size on top. Also, a separate comfortable twin bed is in the same room.

Relax in one of the four big comfy recliners in the living room while watching cable TV on a 50" HDTV or your favorite movie on DVD.

High-Speed Internet is available with the cable service free WIFI. Cell phone coverage is excellent so with either a laptop or your smartphone, you will be able to surf the net, check your email, and post your vacation pictures.

An unfinished, but clean and dry basement provides extra space if you need it. Keep your equipment downstairs out of the way. You will also find the full sized washer and dryer in the basement.

Large patio in the fenced back yard gives a great place for small children to play or for you dog to romp. A propane grille in the garage can easily be moved to the patio for cooking the trout you just pulled out of lake Elsie. Or maybe you just like the smell of those sizzling steaks.

It gets hot in Kellogg on a summer afternoon, so both floors have window mounted air conditioners that keep them cool.

This place is perfect for a family looking for an affordable vacation any time of the year. Not fancy, but not expensive either. So click on the Request to Book bar, or click on the 'Contact Owner' button and drop me a line. I'll respond promptly.

About Talmadge (Tal) Coy Birdsong

Rosalie and I met in Spokane, WA when I was stationed there in 1960 and have been married for more than 50 years. She grew up in the Silver Valley during the hay days of Mining and Logging and graduated from Kellogg HS. We are retired and live in Arlington, WA where we are surrounded by our large family of children, grand children and great-grand children.

Talmadge (Tal) Coy Birdsong purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Talmadge (Tal) Coy Birdsong chose Kellogg

Rosalie and I decided to buy this house after her mother passed away because we love vacationing here and did not want to lose contact with the rest of the family who remained in the Silver Valley. We vacation here as well as rent it to others who wish to enjoy this great vacation spot. We first made some improvements like adding the patio shown in the photo. We also added a new kitchen, a half bath upstairs and replaced the driveway and painted inside and out.

What makes this cottage unique

The view of Silver Mountain from the living room, view of mountains from the kitchen sink, the large fenced back yard and its central location makes this affordable little cottage a great place for a family to enjoy their vacation. This house was built in 1949 by Bunker Hill Mining Co. to house a supervisor's family. We have tried to update it without losing the historic feel.

Guestbook comments from the owner

we very much enjoyed our trip the yard was wonderful for the grandkids to play in after such a long time in the car. It was nice to walk into the house and have the air conditioner on after driving in 90+ degree heat. We would recommend this stay for any and all who were looking to stay in or around the area. Nice not to be cramped in a very small hotel room and the price was fantastic!! Thank you!

Super clean, comfortable and well stocked home.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time renting this home. We came back and stayed longer because it was so well taken care of and sparkling clean. It fit all our needs especially with 2 children under 4 years old. The kitchen has everything needed to cook and bake and every piece of equipment is clean and ready to use! We enjoyed playing in the snow in the large backyard as did our dog.

It took less than 5 minutes to get to Silver Mountain resort where we enjoyed snow tubing and the indoor water park. This home is quite and peaceful even though it's right in town. We will be back again for sure.

Owner's Response: So glad to hear that the effort we put into making this a pleasant place to stay is working. The snow is not the only thing that makes this a great place. In the summer there are bike trails, ATV friendly roads, and the water park.

Perfect for ski weekend! We’re already declaring this an annual tradition.

  • 5 of 5

Great location and perfectly clean. Perfect for our party of 5. Incredible value for the price.

Our only two suggestions: it was quite cold in the house when we arrived and took a few hours to warm it up. It might be time for a programmable thermostat!

Also, tiny amentities (like bar soap or small shampoo) would be a nice addition to your otherwise well-appointed home.

We loved everything and will most definitely return.

Owner's Response: Your feedback is greatly appreciated. I am not sure why the house was not warm when you arrived. Our housekeeper normally turns the heat on when she drops off the key. Giving it time to be up to the right temperature. Programming a thermostat for this is near impossible since our guests arrive on different days of the week. We do provide liquid soap because the bars just seem wasteful since several half-used bars must be discarded at the end of each stay. I haven't been providing shampoo and conditioners because most people prefer a certain type or brand. I suppose if you forget to bring your own it is convenient to have some in the house. Thanks, Tal

We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage in Kellogg. It was a great central location for all of the activities we had planned. The host was easy to work with. I would stay here again.

Birdsong affordable vacation cottage is located just a half mile from the base of the gondola to Silver Mountain. The rails-to-trails bicycle and hiking trail that runs 73-miles is an asphalt trail that almost spans the Idaho Panhandle. The trail begins at Mullan, near the Montana border in the Bitter Root Mountains, and travels through the Silver Valley ending at the Hn'ya)pqi'nn Trailhead near Plummer on Idaho Highway 95. It is only 5 blocks from the Birdsong Cottage to where it passes through Kellogg. The town of Wallace, which looks just like it did in the early 1900's and probably will never change is just 15 miles east.

For the Quad ATV enthusiasts there are hundreds of miles of logging roads through the mountains around kellogg, Smelterville, and Pinehurst which will take you to some of the worlds most beautiful scenery and often encounters wild life to look at. I have seen black bear, moose, elk, deer even bunnies while riding in these mountains. ATVs and tracked ATVs can be rented in Couer d'Alene. Check this website Although there are stories that would lead one to believe: That if a bull moose is standing in the road looking at you he should not be challenged and the best course of action is to quietly back away. Usually one only sees the animal up close just long enough for them to run into the bush and disappear. Then if you stop and wait you can see them re-appear in the next clearing or next ridge.

Silverwood Theme Park just North of Coeur d'Alene just an hour drive away provides a great day of entertainment for the whole family. Coeur d'Alene Lake just 30 minutes away is a great boating lake. There is a boat launch on the East edge of the lake that launches into a calm bay where water sking and other water sports can be enjoyed.

Treat your family to a wonderful vacation in this beautiful part of Northern Idaho.
